Hi everyone. On January 14th, my computer became infected with the *new* VBS/Ritart.worm virus. McAfee is the only anti-virus company to have information on it. Please see http://vil.mcafeesec...nt/v_143930.htm to help understand what I'm refering to. Basically, I'm doing anything I can to get rid of this virus. I have an AOL subscription, so I tried to download the McAfee Special Edition from AOL, but the virus has edited my registry keys. I can't open attrib.exe, regedit.exe, taskmgr.exe, msconfig, cmd, and most importantly can't run any install.exe or setup.exe files. Everytime I try to do one of those actions, Notepad Opens up and reads "This program cannot be run in MSDOS mode". In my start menu, "Run" "Search" are gone, and "Folder Options" in the CP is disabled. After running an AVG scan, most of the "copied" VBS files (which are disguised as MS Word Docs) seem to be gone, but since my registry is edited, I still have the virus.

Recently, I've been getting a "Invalid Boot.ini" error while restarting my computer, but it still powers up alright (for now). In most folders in My Compter (/c), Theres an icon for "Desktop". I believe this is involved with the virus as well. Is there anyway someone can possible give me more info on this virus? It seems like I'm the only one with it, I've been searching everywhere online and can find nothing besides McAfee's information.

I have run basically every virus scan; Panda, AVG Free, AVG 7.5, Avast, Nortans Freescan, and Removed all spyware with Adaware. My computer is fully updated, I've followed every step in the post about what to do before posting a HJT log (disregarding anything that couldn't be run/installed because of the edited registry). • If your anti-virus or firewall complains, please allow this script to run as it is not malicious.
• When it has finished, dss will open two Notepads main.txt and extra.txt -- please copy (CTRL+A and then CTRL+C) and paste (CTRL+V) the contents of main.txt and extra.txt in your next reply.

Wow man, thanks for the fast reply!

I'm downloading the Disinfector right now. However, I've already tried to run Dss.exe in the past. It freezes up at the "registry" part, because regedit.exe can't open. Notepad opens and says something along the lines of "System path not found".

Do you know anything about why the Boot.ini file would have changed? I've heard its really easy to fix this problem create a new notepad doc, type in the boot.ini coding) However, I have no idea what the default Windows XP Home code would be, so I'm weary on that.


Edit: The download for Disinfector just finished. When trying to open it, I get that popup "System path could not be identified"

Yea, if there was a way to do that I'd easily be able to (just bought a new laptop). Do you mean download Mcafee, install it on my laptop, then put it on a flashdrive to my desktop or something?


About the boot.ini, I'm getting nervous now. When the comp boots up it just says "Invalid Boot.ini" but it still boots up fine. I read about how to fix this (on microsoft.com) but was confused at the section where it says to change the default loader to the D drive. (I know the boot.ini is a completely different issue than what I posted---sorry, only add input on that if you have the extra time)

No, can you transfer the flash drive disinfector and DSS over to the infected PC, then run them both and post the logs.

I read about how to fix this (on microsoft.com) but was confused at the section where it says to change the default loader to the D drive.

I would not do anything to the boot.ini file yet, you would be better off having somebody in the Windows XP forum helping you when we remove the malware.


You need to try run those two programs on your PC. Let me know how that goes.

Ok

First you have two anti-viruses running, AVG and McAfee so you need to remove one of these.



Download avz4.zip from here

• Unzip it to your desktop to a folder named avz4
• Double click on AVZ.exe to run it.
• Run an update by clicking the Auto Update button on the Right of the Log window:
• Click Start to begin the update

Note: If you recieve an error message, chose a different source, then click Start again

• After the update, from the "File" menu, choose System Recovery
• Check the box beside 17. Unlock Registry Editor
• Click Execute Selected Scripts and accept any prompts

Then try run those two programs again

I have the AVG 7.5 full edition and the Mcafee Security center. I'll remove the McAfee if you say, but it doesn't have the ability to actually scan for viruses, it just makes sure I have a firewall, anitviral, antispyware, etc.

I tried the AVZ4, and did what you said; but nothing happened.

Try the following

Before we begin, you should save these instructions in Notepad to your desktop, or print them, for easy reference. Much of our fix will be done in Safe mode, and you will be unable to access this thread at that time. If you have questions at any point, or are unsure of the instructions, feel free to post here and ask for clarification before proceeding.


Download SDFix and save it to your Desktop.

Double click SDFix.exe and it will extract the files to %systemdrive%
(Drive that contains the Windows Directory, typically C:\SDFix)

Please then reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :

• Restart your computer
• After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
• Instead of Windows loading as normal, the Advanced Options Menu should appear;
• Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press Enter.
• Choose your usual account.

• Open the extracted SDFix folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
• Type Y to begin the cleanup process.
• It will remove any Trojan Services and Registry Entries that it finds then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
• Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
• When the PC restarts the Fixtool will run again and complete the removal process then display Finished, press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
• Once the desktop icons load the SDFix report will open on screen and also save into the SDFix folder as Report.txt
  (Report.txt will also be copied to Clipboard ready for posting back on the forum).
• Finally paste the contents of the Report.txt back on the forum.

Download ComboFix from one of the locations below, and save it to your Desktop.

Double click combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log and a HiJackthis log in your next reply
Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while its running. That may cause it to stall

I downloaded both, and extracted SDfix. In safe mode, SDFix couldn't be opened (that same "cannot be opened" message--in notepad). After rebooting, I tried to run Comofix, and it tries to open CMD, but Notepad opens and says "this program can't be run in MSDOS mode". This virus is annoying with all of its restrictioins... hah.
