Hi guys,

I'm looking for some help! I seem to be going around in a circle - here is my situation...

Wireless Broadband Router - Edimax AR-7084A. I have 2 PC's, one 98SE & one WinXP SP2.

My XP machine connects to the B/B Router using Cat5e, the 98SE PC connects using wireless.

The XP machine recently popped it's PSU - so a new one was installed and all was OK. This could simply be a coincidence but ever since the Psu blew, I have been unable to connect to the net.

Now I've done a bit of digging about & the router successfully connects to the ISP only when an ethernet cable ISN'T plugged in. (It's OK if connecting via the WLAN)

When connecting via an ethernet cable, the device just disconnects straight away from the ISP - but the NIC does obtain an I.P. address & can successfully browse to the routers config page in IE.

I thought it could just be a problem with the NIC on the PC but I've put a spare one in & even tried connecting to the router via an ethernet cable with a 3rd laptop - the same issue occurs.

What's going on?! There isn't any updates for the firmware so I don't know what else to try - apart from buying another DSL router! I think it's probably a hardware problem but a 2nd opinion would be greatly appreciated!! :)

Welcome to G2G

I'm not familiar with this particular router but I've had a quick scan through the manual for it. You may wish to try the following suggestions:

1. When you say that the router disconnects from the ISP when you connect an ethernet cable, do you mean it completely disconnects or disconnects the machine which uses ethernet only? Either way, it may worth checking if you have MAC filtering enabled and if so, whether the NIC (ethernet) MAC address has been entered (long shot I know, but worth a look)

2. Have you tried resetting the router (by pressing the reset button on the rear of the router for more than 5 seconds). NB This will return ALL router settings to factory default so you may find after the reset, the only way to access the router config initially is via an ethernet cable. You'll need to know the default IP address, username & password, which I believe in this case are:
IP: 192.168.2.1
username: admin
password: 1234

I highly recommend you make sure you have the router's manual to hand before you do this.

You may also need to know your ISP info, such as ISP username/password, encapsulation type, VPI, VCI, whether your ISP uses static/dynamic/PPPoE/PPPoA etc. I suggest you make a note of these things before you reset the router!

Once you've gained access to the router via the ethernet cable, you should be able to set the wireless connection backup. You may need to reboot the computers afterwards in order to get them online.
