A friend got tired of trying to figure out what was wrong with his IBM ThinkPad and gave it to me.

I plug it in and turn it on. At the top left of the black screen it shows:

294336 KB OK
161
163

Then those numbers/codes disappear, and the padlock icon shows up in the same upper left corner.
When I hit any F key, it only beeps.
When I hit any other key, I only get a dot instead of a letter.

Has a sticker that says, "Designed for Microsoft Windows NT/Windows 98".

No recovery disks came with it.

Any hope for this one?
Thanks for any help or ideas.

Hi there

Error codes 161 & 163 mean that the backup (bios) battery needs replacing. The link below is to the hardware service manual for the thinkpad 600/600E which shows you how to locate this battery:

http://www-307.ibm.c...cid=LWIK-3SYPX2

Remember to disconnect the main battery first! The section in the manual you that you need is on page 67.
The error codes are listed on page 53

The pictures aren't great but they should point you in the right direction.

Awesome. Thanks, Samm. I'll check out the manual.
