If i were to install windows xp on this computer with windows vista already installed, would anything bad happen?
If not, how do you do it and keep all of my files and stuff?

Hello,
You can run XP inside of your Vista with virtual machine.
This works very well, but I suggest 2 GB of RAM for best results.
Please go here to learn about using virtual machine.
Thank you.

Howdy:

HERE is a step by step tutorial on how to do that.

It won't ask you to wipe the system first and you don't need to do anything in a "virtual" mode.
