Hey guys this is my first post here and I would just like to say thanks for doing this stuff.

Anyways, a few days ago my system got infected with Smitfraud-C and Zlob.DNSChanger.Rtk and i seem to have gotten rid of them as they don't come up in my virus scans anymore, except for a single registry entry that comes up every time i do a SpyBot S&D scan. Here's what it comes up with:

(SBI $2E72FBCD) Settings
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\WinOpts

It says the problem is related to Smitfraud-C and asks if i want to fix it so i click yes and it goes away only to come back at next reboot. I've tried doing this in safemode and the same thing happens. Also, the scans occasionally bring up cookies from sites i don't recall visiting like HitsLink or Tradedoubler.

All this seems to make my system run very slow and when i go into task manager i can see that the process called services.exe is going crazy using up to 700,000 k of memory at times causing my CPU usage to hang at around 50-90% all the time, even though i'm not running any programs or doing anything in particular that should be hogging so many resources. Every now and then the system will tell me that there is a problem with services.exe and that "send report" - "don't end report" window pops up followed by a countdown to system shutdown that goes for like a minute and then reboots my system. The services.exe file in question is located in the system32 folder so it seems legit but could it be something else causing it to do this? Maybe I'm missing something altogether here.

Hi and welcome to the forums.

My name is Dave. I would be glad to take a look at your log and help you with solving any malware problems. HijackThis logs can sometimes take a while to research so please be patient and I'd be grateful if you would note the following:
  • I will working be on your Malware issues, this may or may not, solve other issues you have with your machine.
  • The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for this issue on this machine.
  • Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine appears to be clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
  • It's often worth reading through these instructions and printing them for ease of reference.
  • If you don't know or understand something, please don't hesitate to say or ask!! It's better to be sure and safe than sorry.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.
I need to check any posts to you with a teacher/expert first so please be patient as we go through this.

Please download FixWareout from one of these sites:
http://downloads.sub.../Fixwareout.exe
http://www.bleepingc.../Fixwareout.exe

Save it to your desktop and run it. Click Next, then Install, make sure "Run fixit" is checked and click Finish.
The fix will begin; follow the prompts. You will be asked to reboot your computer; please do so. Your system may take longer than usual to load; this is normal.

Once the desktop loads please post the text that will open (report.txt) and a new HijackThis log.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I would also like you to run a check for Smitfraud.
Please download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri) to your Desktop.
Double-click SmitfraudFix.exe
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter"; a text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present).
Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.
**If the tool fails to launch from the Desktop, please move SmitfraudFix.exe directly to the root of the system drive (usually C:), and launch from there.
Note : process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.
Hi Kris,
Not quite sure why your posts get cut off so short. You should be able to fit much more than what you are able to now.
For the fix...
Run HijackThis. Hit None of the above, Click Do a System Scan Only. Put a Check in the box on the left side on this:
O20 - Winlogon Notify: ivn4reg - C:\WINDOWS\
Then close all windows except this one and press Fix checked.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Please download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) and save it to your Desktop.
  • Close all other windows before proceeding.
  • Double-click on dss.exe and follow the prompts.
  • When it has finished, dss will open two Notepads main.txt and extra.txt -- please copy (CTRL+A and then CTRL+C) and paste (CTRL+V) the contents of main.txt and extra.txt in your next reply.
