My company purchased a Gateway GM5472 which came with Windows Vista pre-installed. Our company policy is to use Windows XP, so we purchased a new copy of XP to install on the computer. Unfortunately, no one thought to save a copy of the drivers and hardware from the device manager before they formatted the hard drive. Now, the following things try to install on boot-up, but say they cannot find the drivers:

Audio Device on HiDef Audio Bus
Video Controller
SM Bus Controller
PCI Simple Communications Controller
Multimedia Video Controller

Since Gateway does not ship Vista with a Drivers disc and will not support changes to the OS, I'm at a bit of a loss as to how to obtain the necessary XP drivers that I need. Also, because the guy who did the install didn't keep a record, I don't even know the brands/IDs of the hardware that is in there.

I searched and found a small amount of information regarding Gateway laptops with this problem, but those drivers do not appear to be the ones I need. Also, the instructions I found referenced being able to look in the device manager before reformatting, which as I stated above, no one thought to do. If anyone could even begin to point me in the right direction for how to obtain what I need, I would be most grateful.

Well your best bet would be to go to gateway and if they don't have xp drivers look up the specifications for that computer then go to the companies that made the components ( such as intel or whoever ) and see if they have xp drivers..... Good Luck!!!

I tried Gateway. They won't tell me what drivers it shipped with and I have no way of knowing.

I guess I don't know where I would get the specs--would that be somewhere on the Gateway site, do you think?

I guess I must be dumb, because I really don't see where any of that gives me a clue as to what's in there and where to find the drivers.

Whenever I've had to do this before, it's been a case of needing a specific driver for a specific manufacturer, such as Nvidia or whatever. I've never had trouble before now.

Hello KimScoop...

Is THIS your machine? If your machine shipped with Vista, you may not be able to get the drivers from Gateway. Try running Everest on the machine...that should give you the actual installed hardware on the machine and allow you to find the drivers from the device manufacturers.

Yep, that's it. I'll be damned if I know why it didn't come up when I searched.

I'll try Everest, thanks.

Nope, Everest didn't help.

It also lists the same five things as being "unknown":

Audio Device on HiDef Audio Bus
Video Controller
SM Bus Controller
PCI Simple Communications Controller
Multimedia Video Controller

Thanks for the suggestion, though.

It's an ECS motherboard.

The ECS site is frustratingly slow...and this may be a proprietary board made exclusively for gateway. I'll keep trying to locate the board on their site, fut it may take a while.

Your board is supplied exclusively to Gateway... :)

If you are able to get online using that machine, try Option 2 on the NVidia website. According to all I can find, the ECS board utilizes an NVidia chipset...this should locate the correct drivers.

OK, did that. It fixed two of the five, leaving these as still not working:

Audio Device on HiDef Audio Bus
Video Controller
Multimedia Video Controller

Thanks for your help so far!!!!

OK, now we're getting somewhere! Those two fixed all but the "multimedia video controller".

Thanks once again!
