I've downloaded mpeg/avi files from the internet but they won't play on my Vlc player.They go into 'playlist' and after 'play' is pressed error'cannot open files' appears.
Any ideas?

Reinstall VLC and see if there's still a problem.

I've just installed the latest version of vlc player vlc 0.8 6d but files still won't play.
Sorry, but I forgot to mention in my post that I am able to play video and audio files from my library??

Could be corrupted files. Try downloading them again or if possible, put them on a CD and see if you can play them on another computer.
