the history.
too computer to geek city in december.computer crashed would not respond to safe mode options.
would not respond to any choices and would only boot directly to safe mode choices ofcourse my first choice was to restore to best config.so i took it in to be fixed.and of course the easy fix was reload xp.as well as they claime the hard drive is in the begining stages of failure. saying the disks or failing to spin up correctly.
reloading xp would mean loss of all programs i have downloaded (allot of them) some of which i can not reload as they are one time choices. I do alot of rhino and 3 d design work with this computer.
so i had them ghost the hard drive since i was buying a new one. and it works fine or at least it works like it did before it would not boot.
computer started running slow for about 4 months ago . can't find "my computer" for exactly one minute each time the search light comes on when i select my computer or say i trying to access a file in my documents. from my photos it takes 1 minute to bring up the hierarchy of the c drive.
then i can move around easily in that area but choose another or close and go to my computer and another wait of a minute.
computer does not recognize the printer says cannot find print spooler so I removed hp printer officejet7410
reinstalled the program. for about 4 hours the computer worked when i click on my computer it came right up and i could go to any drive or file.
shut it off. then next day came in same problem.
have been going thru msconfig. turning of and on programs.
i got it down to 35 seconds now.
not fixing it returned to normal startup.
the defrag and disk cleanup will not work at all. adn has not worked since before i took it in to have them fix the crash in december.
don't remember last time i defraged. I know that's bad.
the ghosting I am thinking has also copied bad sectors to good sectors on the new drive.
so how do i get around this and come in from the back door ?
can i do something to reverse the read of the hard drive to identify bad sectors and isolate them?
or what could be holding up my computer defrag?

thank you for this opportunity to ask such a long question

Tim

first thing you want to do is backup all your data...

them go to START..RUN...type in MSCONFIG...then click on OK or press ENTER..
click on START UP TAB...uncheck everything EXCEPT your AV and firewall...if its a laptop you have to be careful about what you uncheck or your touch pad and wireless and things like that will not function for you..
google each start up item to decide if you need it to load with windows...unchecking them does not remove them ..they are still available to use...

the next thing we are going to do is turn off indexing ....its a resource hog and if you aren't searching for things on your computer 10 times a day it will only slow down your system....

click on start...my computer...right click on C: drive....properties...on the general tab..uncheck ...allow indexing on this drive....if you do not have the box on your system...

then START...RUN...type in SERVICES.MSC...then OK...scroll down until you find INDEXING SERVICE...click on it and in the general tab set it to DISABLED...then exit

To clean your temp folder, recycle bin, index.dat etc..please download this free tool...

CCleaner

Don't install any Toolbars, or other programs, should it ask you...Just
uncheck the option of installing the Yahoo toolbar....if you get
the slim version it does not have the toolbar
thats the one I recommend...

It will put a shortcut on your Desktop.

Click on CCleaner to start it....
Before first use...
Select Options then Advanced.
UNCHECK "Only delete files in Windows Temp folder older than 48 hours"
The rest of the standard settings are fine...

Then click "Run Cleaner"

DO NOT USE ANY OF THE OTHER TOOLS...RUNNING THEM MAY CAUSE OTHER PROBLEMS

next get diskeeper lite here...

after installing it...click on the icon...close the "nag" screen...click on your c drive to select it ...then down towards the bottom ...click on defragment now...first time you use it it may take 15 to 30 minutes to complete...do it about every two weeks and it will complete in about 7 minutes...
reboot and tell me hows its running...

you do not have to defrag in safe mode with diskeeper lite and its 10 times as fast than the defragger that comes with windows
