I don't know what I have, but my network wouldn't work, so I ended up reloading Window XP. It worked great until I rebooted, then it did the same thing (twice). It also gives me errors about the firewall and ICS not being able to start. I've done all the 'do this first....' stuff and it didn't find much. This isn't an attempt to bump my message, just more information. I have to take action on this box, so I'm about to format and reinstall windows. So, here goes.

- Attempting to start Windows Firewall points you to the ICS (Internet Connection Sharing) service,
- Attempting to start ICS results in Error 2001 - Invalid driver
- ICS should not even be installed on the computer
- Cannot access sharing panel because the "advanced" selection is missing from the network properties panel
- Installing ICS through the wizard does not help


Somehow the ICS service got installed, or turned on, or something. I don't want it and never did want it. I have a hardware router that does connection sharing, the same as everyone else does, but I can't get rid of it, so I see no other choice.

I reinstalled from scratch (formatting the drive) and now everything works fine. This link describes my problem perfectly, but they haven't found a fix yet.

By the way, we think this may have happened when my daughter attempted to get onto the wireless network at school (which did not work). It turns out that they were working on the system while the students were using it. Maybe the system tried to send a sharing configuration down to her PC; resulting in a sharing configuration with no sharing software. Who knows!
