:tazz: Please help! My laptop has been slowly going down hill for a while - running really slow. I installed SP2 hoping this would help things a bit but now it's even worse - Microsoft are hopeless and are emailing me with one or two tasks a day which is making no progress or difference. Anyway, my main problems are the fact that my system is so slow, it almost freezes when i'm switching to view different windows. Supposedly I was meant to have 40GB of hard drive but seem to only have 30 - this has been split into two partitions. One is empty and my main c drive has only 3GB of space left - I'm sure this is a major factor in my system running slow. I want to expand my spare "e" drive/volume so that I have more space. The next problem is that I continually have spyware/adware on my system, even though I have Norton up and running. This means almost daily scans to remove them. Another problem is now I cannot burn CD's. I was using Nero 6 full edition but it seems that my system no longer has a burner - or at least it cannot be detected (it is there though!) - I've tried different software to no avail. I'm sure that I need a lot of Window's hotfixes but another major problem is that I cannot use windows update - it just will not read my system! Lastly, I have real problems logging into sites - javascript usually, means I cannot get into a page and sometimes "cookie" problems. Even though I have everything set up correctly in the internet privacy settings of IE 6 and also Norton. So all in all this is driving me nuts - I just can't seem to fix anything. I may have to do a system restore - but I had all my software pre-installed on my laptop when I bought it - so I don't have any disks to do this with. Gosh if you've made it to the end of this well done!! If your still awake too - that's amazing!! Any ideas?? No real teckkie answers please as I'm just a girl who needs it put into layman's terms!!! Thank you in advance!!

Just go here and Follow the directions CLICK HERE If you need any help just post here and let me know. Also just because you have Norton doesnt mean you wont have spyware. Norton does NOT pick up alot of spyware! And depending on the version of Norton it might not pickup any spyware.

:tazz: Thank you so much - you're right about Norton not picking up much spyware - I always need to use AdAware too and PC Bug Detector - Once upon a time I was able to use my laptop, surf the internet without any problems! Now I have a new problem everyday. Thanks for posting the info. attachemnt, I'll give it all a go! Let you know shortly!! Jackie x

:tazz: I am so impressed with this site - the link you sent me to the help page was so comprehensive, concise and easy to follow - just what I needed - thank you!!

Just a couple of points I'd like to go through to make sure I've done everything correctly......

I definately had connection problems which WinSockFix sorted out. I had Ad-aware 6 which I changed to the Ad-aware SE and that was so much better - it found just under 250 critical adware programs on my system.

There didn't seem to be any malicious programs found with CS Shredder but the Spybot S & D found 18 actual installed spyware programs. No wonder my system was so bad!

I downloaded the Spybot S&D but was not sure if the DSO Exploit Fix was a separate download, because when I clicked on the link it took me to an info page about Spybot.

I have Norton 2004 and wonder if it's even worth me having this? Should I use the AVG instead?

The TDS-3 link didn't find any trojan programs.

Now when it came to the SP1a download - I couldn't find the actual link for SP1a and my windows update does not seem to work - this is one problem I'm still having.

I did have SP2 though which I've now uninstalled. Should I now just reinstall SP2 now that my system's clean?

Does this mean I don't need to worry about the SP1a update?

I have posted my HJT log and hopefully this can help with any other information I need to supply.

Thank you again in advance!! Jackie
