I am working my way thru the steps to clean up my computer from the 'before posting a HJT log'. I have several OLD viruses in the virus vault. Should I delete (wipe?) them? And just for future refrence, when I run virus scan should I attempt to heal the virus first? Delete? it. Or if it does have to be quarentined (sorry for spelling) in the vault should I then delete it?

Sorry for all the question marks...

Hello

Please download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) and save it to your Desktop.
  • Close all other windows before proceeding.
  • Double-click on dss.exe and follow the prompts.
  • If your anti-virus or firewall complains, please allow this script to run as it is not malicious.
  • When it has finished, dss will open two Notepads main.txt and extra.txt -- please copy (CTRL+A and then CTRL+C) and paste (CTRL+V) the contents of main.txt and extra.txt in your next reply.

Please do an online scan with Kaspersky WebScanner

Click on Kaspersky Online Scanner and click Accept

You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
  • The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
  • Now click on Scan Settings
  • In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
    Extended (if available otherwise Standard)
    • Scan Options:
    Scan Archives
    Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK
  • Now under select a target to scan:Select My Computer
  • This will program will start and scan your system.
  • The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
  • Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
    • Now click on the Save as Text button:
  • Save the file to your desktop.
  • Copy and paste that information in your next post.

Again, Thanks for your help

We can leave Kaspersky instead as it does take ages

Run this, can do it offline

Download Dr.Web CureIt to the desktop:
ftp://ftp.drweb.com/pub/drweb/cureit/drweb-cureit.exe
  • Doubleclick the drweb-cureit.exe file and Allow to run the express scan
  • This will scan the files currently running in memory and when something is found, click the yes button when it asks you if you want to cure it. This is only a short scan.
  • Once the short scan has finished, mark the drives that you want to scan.
  • Select all drives. A red dot shows which drives have been chosen.
  • Click the green arrow at the right, and the scan will start.
  • Click 'Yes to all' if it asks if you want to cure/move the file.
  • When the scan has finished, in the menu, click file and choose save report list
  • Save the report to your desktop. The report will be called DrWeb.csv
  • Close Dr.Web Cureit.

DSS is the main thing anyway

Hello

1. Please re-open HiJackThis and choose do a system scan only. Check the boxes next to ONLY the entries listed below(if present):

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {7E853D72-626A-48EC-A868-BA8D5E23E045} - (no file)
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {BDF3E430-B101-42AD-A544-FADC6B084872} - (no file)
O3 - Toolbar: {1A03F196-9617-4CA0-842B-A83CEECB022B} - - (no file)
O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {42CDD1BF-3FFB-4238-8AD1-7859DF00B1D6} - (no file)
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [AlcxMonitor] ALCXMNTR.EXE
O20 - Winlogon Notify: WRNotifier - C:\WINDOWS\system32\WRLogonNTF.dll (file missing)

2. Now close all windows other than HiJackThis, including browsers, so that nothing other than HijackThis is open, then click Fix Checked. A box will pop up asking you if you wish to fix the selected items. Please choose YES. Once it has fixed them, please exit/close HijackThis.

Please download the OTMoveIt2 by OldTimer.
  • Save it to your desktop.
  • Please double-click OTMoveIt2.exe to run it.
  • Copy the file paths below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose Copy):

    C:\WINDOWS\system32\o
    D:\Info.exe
    F:\LaunchU3.exe
  • Return to OTMoveIt2, right click in the "Paste List of Files/Folders to be Moved" window (under the light blue bar) and choose Paste.
  • Copy the file paths below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose Copy):

    purity
  • Return to OTMoveIt2, right click in the "Paste List Of Files/Patterns To Search For and Move" window (under the yellow bar) and choose Paste.
  • Click the red Moveit! button.
  • Copy everything in the Results window (under the green bar) to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose copy), and paste it in your next reply.
  • Close OTMoveIt2
If a file or folder cannot be moved immediately you may be asked to reboot the machine to finish the move process. If you are asked to reboot the machine choose Yes.

Backup Your Registry with ERUNT
  • Please use the following link and scroll down to ERUNT and download it.
    http://aumha.org/freeware/freeware.php
  • For version with the Installer:
Use the setup program to install ERUNT on your computer
  • For the zipped version:
Unzip all the files into a folder of your choice.
Click Erunt.exe to backup your registry to the folder of your choice.

Note: to restore your registry, go to the folder and start ERDNT.exe

Now we need to fix your problems by making a .reg file. Copy the code below into a Notepad file. Name the file as fix.reg, change the "Save as Type" to "All files" and save it on the desktop.

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\explorer\mountpoints2\F]

[-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\explorer\mountpoints2\{ba49d70e-55af-11d8-b3c9-806d6172696f}]

Then double click on the fix.reg file, when it prompts to merge click "Yes".

Reboot and tell me how your PC is running then

I want to thank you very much for your help.

I did the things that you told me to.

The results of the moveit is as fallows:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\o moved successfully.
D:\Info.exe moved successfully.
File/Folder F:\LaunchU3.exe not found.
[Custom Input]

OTMoveIt2 v1.0.19 log created on 02112008_201544

When I restarted the computer it said i was missing a DLL something, but it popped up so fast i couldnt catch the name of it. The computer takes about 6 mins to start up once its turned on. But all the components seem to still be on my desktop and when i clicked connect and explorer and all everything seemed to run as usual. The actual time it takes to do these regular tasks has not really changed, just the start up.

Thanks again
Christy

Your logs are clean ! We need to do a few things

  • Make sure you have an Internet Connection.
  • Double-click OTMoveIt2.exe to run it.
  • Click on the CleanUp! button
  • A list of tool components used in the Cleanup of malware will be downloaded.
  • If your Firewall or Real Time protection attempts to block OtMoveit2 to rech the Internet, please allow the application to do so.
  • Click Yes to beging the Cleanup process and remove these components, including this application.
  • You will be asked to reboot the machine to finish the Cleanup process. If you are asked to reboot the machine choose Yes.

You now need to update your Java and remove your older versions.

Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components.

* Click Start > Control Panel.
* Click Add/Remove Programs.
* Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE) in the name.
* Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.

Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE), and install it to your computer from
here

Now we need to create a new System Restore point.

Click Start Menu > Run > type (or copy and paste)

%SystemRoot%\System32\restore\rstrui.exe

Press OK. Choose Create a Restore Point then click Next. Name it and click Create, when the confirmation screen shows the restore point has been created click Close.

Next goto Start Menu > Run > type

cleanmgr

Click OK, Disk Cleanup will open and start calculating the amount of space that can be freed, Once thats finished it will open the Disk Cleanup options screen, click the More Options tab then click Clean up on the system restore area and choose Yes at the confirmation window which will remove all the restore points except the one we just created.

To close Disk Cleanup and remove the Temporary Internet Files detected in the initial scan click OK then choose Yes on the confirmation window.

Below I have included a number of recommendations for how to protect your computer against malware infections.

* Keep Windows updated by regularly checking their website at :
http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/
This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer.

* To reduce re-infection for malware in the future, I strongly recommend installing these free programs:
SpywareBlaster protects against bad ActiveX
IE-SPYAD puts over 5000 sites in your restricted zone so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all
Have a look at this tutorial for IE-Spyad here

* SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.

Make Internet Explorer more secure
  • Click Start > Run
  • Type Inetcpl.cpl & click OK
  • Click on the Security tab
  • Click Reset all zones to default level
  • Make sure the Internet Zone is selected & Click Custom level
  • In the ActiveX section, set the first two options ("Download signed and unsigned ActiveX controls) to "Prompt", and ("Initialize and Script ActiveX controls not marked as safe") to "Disable".
  • Next Click OK, then Apply button and then OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

* MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well known ad sites and other bad sites. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer, meaning it will be difficult to infect yourself in the future.

* Please consider using an alternate browser. Mozilla's Firefox browser is fantastic; it is much more
secure than Internet Explorer, immune to almost all known browser hijackers, and also has the best built-in pop up
blocker (as an added benefit!) that I have ever seen. If you are interested, Firefox may be downloaded from
Here

* Take a good look at the following suggestions for malware prevention by reading Tony Klein’s article 'How Did I Get Infected In The First Place'
Here

Thank you for your patience, and performing all of the procedures requested.

Thank you again for your help. I did your recomended actions. I didnt install firefox even though I agree with you, its safer, but its my boyfriends computer, and he dosnt believe in change (especially when he has someone else who will work on his computer...) But ill keep trying to talk him into it.

I do have a couple questions though.

I still have the AVG Spyware, and the superantispyware on my computer. should i still download the spywareblaster? If I remember correctly, AVG spyware expires in 30 days. maybe when it expires I should download the other? Will I have too many spyware programs if im running 3? same question with the spyware guard? would that be 4 spyware programs?

I also have a DLL missing? when I restart my computer it now has a ding that comes up with a message. its very fast, but I read part of it, it says USRPRB(something).DLL is missing? is this something that was uninstalled? Can I replace it?

And my final question goes back to my original question, if I do have a virus in the future, what is the best steps to be taken with the virus scan? Should I try to delete the virus, heal it, or quarentine it? I know some viruses wount let me heal it. If it does go to the quarentine. should I delete the virus vault. I currently have some in my vault now. should I delete them?

Ill be donating to your paypal in a few mins. Im sorry its not what your help is worth, that would be the cost of a new computer, because that was going to be my next solution, throw it out and start over! but I appreciate your help more then I can tell you in typing or with money :)

Thanks again

Hello

I still have the AVG Spyware, and the superantispyware on my computer. should i still download the spywareblaster?

Yes still install SpywareBlaster, it is a different program. It doesn't remove spyware, it insteads immunizes your PC against infections. It is very important you install this one.

Will I have too many spyware programs if im running 3? same question with the spyware guard? would that be 4 spyware programs?

You should have the following : either AVG anti-spyware or SUPERAntiSpyware, then you need SpywareBlaster and SpywareGuard. Having all these programs won't conflict in any way

is this something that was uninstalled? Can I replace it?

Sounds like the remains of some program, it is impossible for me to say what it is unless you get more information. This might do the job

Fix this entry in HijackThis

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [PC-Checkup] "C:\PC-Checkup\PCCheckUp.exe" -mini

if I do have a virus in the future, what is the best steps to be taken with the virus scan?

Quarantine is the best option, then heal, then delete. You should leave any spyware in the vault to be safe. Often there are false positives or the need to restore files, so that is why quarantine is the best option.

but I appreciate your help

Thank you for the donation it was very kind. We are just happy when users are nice and friendly like you were :)

Let me know if you have any more questions, off to bed now though so will reply in the morning
