I've been having problems with my 500 gig external hd. Last week it only showed up in the Device Manager but nowhere else. Now it wont even show up there. I downloaded the WD Data LifeGuard Diagnostics program from their website. Ran the tests but it fail and had bad sectors.

Hello, and welcome to Geeks To Go.
If your external hard drive is not showing up in device manager, and has failed the diagnostics test, your hard drive is bad.
Is the drive still under warranty?

I would imagine it would be. I just bought it last September. Im in my dorm room and all that info is at my house. Im going home this weekend and im gonna check though. On bestbuy.com it says "Warranty Terms - 1 Year for parts and labor."

Is this an USB external HD?

Was just wondering how you have been unplugging it when your done.

If you are not "unmounting it" before you unplug it, you could end up "crashing" it.
