distorted sound

I am having a problem with my sound. When I play a CD,or video, or ripped music, the sound is distorted, Merle Haggard sounds like a lady

"Sound" is'nt really my thing, but for someone to assist you it might be best if you provide some more info e.g.

What sound card you have
What OS - XP ?
What application are you using to play your music - Windows Media Player or something else
Speakers - internal / external ?

Etc Etc,

Hopefully someone may be able to assist then :)
