Hi! When surfing the internet and clicking on a link, the website gets redirected to http://www.search-da...com/search.php?. I can't get it to stop, can't find it anywhere in my computer to delete it, and the spyware-removal applications I was told to download didn't fix the problem. (Actually, one of the spyware removal programs "AVG Anti Spyware" has developed a recurring message upon booting my computer saying I have a certain Trojan Horse and it asks me how to react.. after I say Clean and Quarantine it says I need to reboot, and this seems to be a circle occuring every time the computer starts, reboots included). Anyways, I am being very annoyed with constantly going back and forth until I finally am allowed through to the desired website. Please help!

Hi BigWalkinTallV

welcome to geekstogo :)

sorry to keep you waiting. lets do a deeper scan of your machine for me to analyse.

Please download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) and save it to your Desktop.
  • Close all other windows before proceeding.
  • Double-click on dss.exe and follow the prompts.
  • When it has finished, dss will open two Notepads main.txt and extra.txt -- please copy (CTRL+A and then CTRL+C) and paste (CTRL+V) the contents of main.txt and extra.txt in your next reply.

you may need to post the logs over 2 replies to ensure all the information is posted.

i can see a vundo infection and some associated malware which we will tackle in this post.

Please download ComboFix from Here or Here to your Desktop.

**Note: In the event you already have Combofix, this is a new version that I need you to download. It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop**
  • Please, never rename Combofix unless instructed.
  • Close any open browsers.
  • Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

    -----------------------------------------------------------

    • Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before performing a scan. They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results".
    • Click on this link to see a list of programs that should be disabled. The list is not all inclusive. If yours is not listed and you don't know how to disable it, please ask.

      -----------------------------------------------------------

    • Close any open browsers.
    • WARNING: Combofix will disconnect your machine from the Internet as soon as it starts
    • Please do not attempt to re-connect your machine back to the Internet until Combofix has completely finished.
    • If there is no internet connection after running Combofix, then restart your computer to restore back your connection.

    -----------------------------------------------------------

  • Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • When finished, it will produce a report for you.
  • Please post the "C:\ComboFix.txt" along with a new HijackThis log for further review.
**Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall**

things are looking up. in this post i want to scan a suspicious looking file and remove some others.

firstly, can you tell me what this site is: www.brainfuse.com? it is on one of your activex components, if you dont know we can easily remove it.

====STEP 1====
Jotti File Submission:

Please go to Jotti's malware scan
Copy and paste the following file path into the "File to upload & scan"box on the top of the page:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\xy7h.exe

Click on the submit button

Please post the results of the scan in your next reply.

If Jotti is busy, try the same atVirustotal

====STEP 2====
1. Please open Notepad
  • Click Start , then Run
  • Type notepad .exe in the Run Box.

2. Now copy/paste the entire content of the codebox below into the Notepad window:

File::
C:\WINDOWS\ALCMTR.EXE
C:\WINDOWS\system32\AppCert\wsil32.dll

Registry::
[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\shared tools\msconfig\startupreg\Alcmtr]
[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\system\currentcontrolset\control\session manager\appcertdlls]

3. Save the above as CFScript.txt

4. Then drag the CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe as depicted in the animation below. This will start ComboFix again.

Posted Image

5. After reboot, (in case it asks to reboot), please post the following reports/logs into your next reply:
  • Combofix.txt
  • A new HijackThis log.

In your next reply could i see:
1. any ideas what www.brainfuse.com is?
2. the jotti scan report
3. the combofix log
4. a new hijackthis log

I'll post the HJThis log in the next post. To answer your question, branfuse is a program I use from my local library that provides online homework help. I'm pretty sure that's one of the safe programs I've got on here. Also, the "jotti" scanner wouldn't work because it gave me a message that said "The file you uploaded is 0 bytes. It is very likely a firewall or a piece of malware is prohibiting you from uploading this file". My virus protection caught this a while back also, the xy7h thing, and I think at least some of it was deleted (possibly the part that was indicated in the text that wouldn't work in jotti, but obviously it is still lurking in my computer somewhere..)

My virus protection caught this a while back also, the xy7h thing, and I think at least some of it was deleted (possibly the part that was indicated in the text that wouldn't work in jotti, but obviously it is still lurking in my computer somewhere..)

chances are that it is no longer on your computer, but there is a Registry Entry pointing to it, so we will clear that entry and double check on the file.

so, in this post we will clear that one entry, flush your temp folders, and do a couple of scans on your machine to see if there are any final infections lurking in there. it will most likely take a few hours to do all the scans, and there will be a lot to post in your next reply.

====STEP 1====
clearing that registry entry and ensuring that file is gone......

1. Please open Notepad
  • Click Start , then Run
  • Type notepad .exe in the Run Box.

2. Now copy/paste the entire content of the codebox below into the Notepad window:

File::
C:\WINDOWS\system32\xy7h.exe

Registry::
[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\shared tools\msconfig\startupreg\xy7h]

3. Save the above as CFScript.txt

4. Then drag the CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe as depicted in the animation below. This will start ComboFix again.

Posted Image

5. if it asks to reboot, then reboot.

====STEP 2====
Flushing your temp folders.....

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
This program is for XP and Windows 2000 onlyDouble-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
If you use Firefox browserClick Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
If you use Opera browserClick Opera at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
For Technical Support, double-click the e-mail address located at the bottom of each menu.

====STEP 3====
checking for spyware.......

Download and scan with SUPERAntiSpyware Free for Home Users
  • Double-click SUPERAntiSpyware.exe and use the default settings for installation.
  • An icon will be created on your desktop. Double-click that icon to launch the program.
  • If asked to update the program definitions, click "Yes". If not, update the definitions before scanning by selecting "Check for Updates". (If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download and unzip them from here.)
  • Under "Configuration and Preferences", click the Preferences button.
  • Click the Scanning Control tab.
  • Under Scanner Options make sure the following are checked (leave all others unchecked):
    • Close browsers before scanning.
    • Scan for tracking cookies.
    • Terminate memory threats before quarantining.
  • Click the "Close" button to leave the control center screen.
  • Back on the main screen, under "Scan for Harmful Software" click Scan your computer.
  • On the left, make sure you check C:\Fixed Drive.
  • On the right, under "Complete Scan", choose Perform Complete Scan.
  • Click "Next" to start the scan. Please be patient while it scans your computer.
  • After the scan is complete, a Scan Summary box will appear with potentially harmful items that were detected. Click "OK".
  • Make sure everything has a checkmark next to it and click "Next".
  • A notification will appear that "Quarantine and Removal is Complete". Click "OK" and then click the "Finish" button to return to the main menu.
  • If asked if you want to reboot, click "Yes".
  • To retrieve the removal information after reboot, launch SUPERAntispyware again.
    • Click Preferences, then click the Statistics/Logs tab.
    • Under Scanner Logs, double-click SUPERAntiSpyware Scan Log.
    • If there are several logs, click the current dated log and press View log. A text file will open in your default text editor.
    • Please copy and paste the Scan Log results in your next reply.
  • Click Close to exit the program.

====STEP 4====
scanning for any final infections.....

Please do an online scan with Kaspersky WebScanner

Click on Accept

You will be promted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
  • The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
  • Now click on Scan Settings
  • In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
    Extended (if available otherwise Standard)
    • Scan Options:
    Scan Archives
    Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK
  • Now under select a target to scan:Select My Computer
  • This will program will start and scan your system.
  • The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
  • Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
    • Now click on the Save as Text button:
  • Save the file to your desktop.
  • Copy and paste that information in your next post.

====STEP 5====
and a log for me to look over......we will do another Deckard System Scan, there will only be one report this time

  • Close all other windows before proceeding.
  • Double-click on dss.exe and follow the prompts.
  • When it has finished, dss will open one Notepad main.txt -- please copy (CTRL+A and then CTRL+C) and paste (CTRL+V) the contents of main.txt in your next reply.

In your next reply could i see:
1. the SUPERantispyware log
2. the kaspersky scan report
3. the DSS log

(i dont need to see a combofix log this time).

there will be a lot of information to post and it will likely have to post it over more than one reply to ensure all the information gets posted and none gets cut off.

Alright, here we go. I couldn't find the exact button that said Save As Text on the Kaspersky scanner, but I clicked the "Save Report As" and here is the page it gave me, it seems to have sufficient information for you.
