Hello. Lately my computer has been running really slow. Today it found a virus called Adware.Badaz, and I haven't downloaded anything lately. Everytime I scan using SuperAntiSpyware or AVG I get a bunch of tracking cookies and my computer is running slow. I would appreciate it if you could help me out here. Here is my HiJackThis log:

Hi TGOC

welcome to geekstogo :)

sorry to keep you waiting. lets do a deeper scan of your machine for me to analyse.

Please download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) and save it to your Desktop.
  • Close all other windows before proceeding.
  • Double-click on dss.exe and follow the prompts.
  • When it has finished, dss will open two Notepads main.txt and extra.txt -- please copy (CTRL+A and then CTRL+C) and paste (CTRL+V) the contents of main.txt and extra.txt in your next reply.

you may need to post the logs over 2 replies to ensure all the information is posted.

Hi TGOC

i can see some malware in your logs which we will remove.

however, i suspect your computer is being made slow by you having 2 antispyware programs running - AVG and SUPERantispyware. they will conflict with each other and slow your machine down, and possibly provide less protection, not more.

in this post we will flush your temp folders, clear away the malware i can see and do another scan.

but, firstly, could you uninstall either the AVG antispyware or the SUPERantispyware. and let me know which one you cleared.

====STEP 1====
Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
This program is for XP and Windows 2000 onlyDouble-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
If you use Firefox browserClick Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
If you use Opera browserClick Opera at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
For Technical Support, double-click the e-mail address located at the bottom of each menu.

====STEP 2====
Please re-open HiJackThis and scan. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below.

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = http://ie.redirect.h...a...&pf=desktop
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://ie.redirect.h...a...&pf=desktop
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://ie.redirect.h...a...&pf=desktop
O15 - Trusted Zone: http://*.trymedia.com (HKLM)

Now close all windows other than HiJackThis, then click Fix Checked. Close HiJackThis.

====STEP 3====
Please do an online scan with Kaspersky WebScanner

Click on Accept

You will be promted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
  • The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
  • Now click on Scan Settings
  • In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
    Extended (if available otherwise Standard)
    • Scan Options:
    Scan Archives
    Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK
  • Now under select a target to scan:Select My Computer
  • This will program will start and scan your system.
  • The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
  • Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
    • Now click on the Save as Text button:
  • Save the file to your desktop.
  • Copy and paste that information in your next post.

things looking better now

I uninstalled SuperAntiSpyware, but I'm wondering if that one is better than AVG?

in my mind they are as good as each other, but the key point is only to have one running.

Please re-open HiJackThis and scan. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below.

R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://ie.redirect.h...a...&pf=desktop

Now close all windows other than HiJackThis, then click Fix Checked. Close HiJackThis

in your next reply could i see:
1. a new hijackthis log
2. an idea of how your machine is running now

My machine is running pretty well, however, since I deleted some of those things in the HiJackThis file, my internet browser has been a little messed up. It won't let me enable McAfee and I cannot change my homepage, it always changes to some microsoft redirect thing. Perhaps I deleted something I wasn't supposed to?

Here is my HiJackThis log, I would like for you to see if you can find why I can't change my homepage:

It won't let me enable McAfee

i can only really see norton on your system. do you have McAfee? the reason i ask is that you should only have one anti-virus program running. if you have more then they just conflict with each other and slow your system down.

I cannot change my homepage, it always changes to some microsoft redirect thing

yes, i can see that....we are stuggling to remove that item. i am wondering if your security programs have locked your homepage. could you check through norton and anyother security programs if this is the case?

Perhaps I deleted something I wasn't supposed to?

does not look to be the case, but we will check.

but first i want to run another tool over your system:

Please download ComboFix from Here or Here to your Desktop.

**Note: In the event you already have Combofix, this is a new version that I need you to download. It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop**
  • Please, never rename Combofix unless instructed.
  • Close any open browsers.
  • Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

    -----------------------------------------------------------

    • Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before performing a scan. They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results".
    • Click on this link to see a list of programs that should be disabled. The list is not all inclusive. If yours is not listed and you don't know how to disable it, please ask.

      -----------------------------------------------------------

    • Close any open browsers.
    • WARNING: Combofix will disconnect your machine from the Internet as soon as it starts
    • Please do not attempt to re-connect your machine back to the Internet until Combofix has completely finished.
    • If there is no internet connection after running Combofix, then restart your computer to restore back your connection.

    -----------------------------------------------------------

  • Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • When finished, it will produce a report for you.
  • Please post the "C:\ComboFix.txt" along with a new HijackThis log for further review.
**Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall**

in your next reply could i see:
1. the answer to the McAfee question
2. if you could find a security program that was locking your homepage
3. the combofix log
4. a new hijackthis log

I do not have McAfee antivirus or anything but I did download the McAfee SiteAdvisor. Perhaps I have to reinstall it. I did find that my Norton was blocking me from changing my homepage, however the funny thing is it never warned me that I was changing my homepage and if it should allow it or not, even though I had checked to warn me about it changing. Here is my ComboFix log:

I do not have McAfee antivirus or anything but I did download the McAfee SiteAdvisor.

i suspect there is another infection hitting you, dont reinstall anything just yet.

I did find that my Norton was blocking me from changing my homepage, however the funny thing is it never warned me that I was changing my homepage and if it should allow it or not, even though I had checked to warn me about it changing.

ok, good to know, we will sort that hijackthis entry later, in the mean time we have another infection to deal with.

we will fix this other infection first, it will take several posts and it is likely that some of your security programs have been compromised.

First Approach:

You have a downloader trojan called Downloader.Agent.awf or Downloader.Agent.ayy. This trojan replaces legitimate files that are common on most computers with an infected file. It then moves the legitimate file to a "bak" or backup folder. Please follow the directions below to run FindAWF so we can identify the files that have been infected and the backups then restore them.

Download FindAWF.exe from here or here, and save it to your desktop.
  • Double-click on the FindAWF.exe file to run it.
  • It will open a command prompt and ask you to "Press any key to continue".
  • You will be presented with a Menu.

    1. Press 1 then Enter to scan for bak folders
    2. Press 2 then Enter to restore files from bak folders
    3. Press 3 then Enter to remove bak folders
    4. Press 4 then Enter to reset domain zones
    5. Press E then Enter to EXIT

  • Press 1, then press Enter
  • It may take a few minutes to complete so be patient.
  • When it is complete, it will open a text file in notepad called AWF.txt.
  • Please copy and paste the contents of the AWF.txt file in your next reply.
