I followed the "before posting a hijackthis log" steps with no luck.

looks like there is at least 1 file involved dfrgresa.dll and possibly another corpolm.dll that I cant remove with killbox.exe, avenger.exe, ad-aware, norton anti-virus, avg anti-spyware, super anti spyware, or hijackthis.

maybe a service is running at startup that locks the files?

as far as the symptoms i see, when I first open a new internet exlorer window and click on a link, I get redirected. I have to go back to the original link and click it again. I do this 2 or 3 times untill the link finally goes where it's supposed to. every once in a while i will see a winlogon, explorer, or ieexplore "encountered an error and needs to close" type error.

also on occasion when trying to delete the files on restart of windows, my TCPIP driver get corrupted and I have to replace it with a backup copy of it that I made (tcpip.sys in system32)

thanks in advance for any help!

Hello guitarscientist

Welcome to G2Go. :)
=================
Please download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) and save it to your Desktop.
  • Close all other windows before proceeding.
  • Double-click on dss.exe and follow the prompts.
  • When it has finished, dss will open two Notepads main.txt and extra.txt -- please copy (CTRL+A and then CTRL+C) and paste (CTRL+V) the contents of main.txt and extra.txt in your next reply.

Please download ComboFix from Here to your Desktop.

**Note: In the event you already have Combofix, this is a new version that I need you to download. It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop**
  • Close any open browsers.
  • Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

    -----------------------------------------------------------

    • Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before performing a scan. They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results".
    • Click on this link to see a list of programs that should be disabled. The list is not all inclusive. If yours is not listed and you don't know how to disable it, please ask.

      -----------------------------------------------------------

  • Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • When finished, it will produce a report for you.
  • Please post the "C:\ComboFix.txt" along with a new HijackThis log for further review.
**Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall**

I just realized that my explorer.exe has been running at 50% cpu all day and rebooting doesnt help. it's probably been running like that since after I ran the first combofix.exe, but Im not sure if it is related...

That is not related to Combofix.
More than likely malware that is left over.

Download Dr.Web CureIt to the desktop:
ftp://ftp.drweb.com/pub/drweb/cureit/drweb-cureit.exe
  • Doubleclick the drweb-cureit.exe file and Allow to run the express scan
  • This will scan the files currently running in memory and when something is found, click the yes button when it asks you if you want to cure it. This is only a short scan.
  • Once the short scan has finished, mark the drives that you want to scan.
  • Select all drives. A red dot shows which drives have been chosen.
  • Click the green arrow at the right, and the scan will start.
  • Click 'Yes to all' if it asks if you want to cure/move the file.
  • When the scan has finished, in the menu, click file and choose save report list
  • Save the report to your desktop. The report will be called DrWeb.csv
  • Close Dr.Web Cureit.
  • Post that log in your next reply.

(Note if you cannot open the log it produces then right click on it and choose rename.
Rename it to .txt and you will be able to open it)
