I need some help with a friend's computer. The wireless card appeared to be not working, as it could not detect the wireless network. I was going to try uninstalling and reinstalling drivers for the card. However, much to my surprise, the shortcut to Control Panel was missing. When I tried going to Control Panel through a back door (an icon in another window), I got an error message saying access was restricted on this computer and that I should contact system administrator. I asked my friend if he had more than one user profile set up and if maybe only one had administrative privileges. He said he had only the one profile set. After going to Safe Mode, I was able to get to the device manager through another avenue. (Control panel was still missing.) I unistalled and reinstalled the wireless adapter. When I rebooted in normal mode, the wireless network was detected. But it said it had limited or no connectivity. I clicked repair. It attempted to do so, but was unable to finish and again gave me a message to contact administrator.

I am posting the hyjack this log. Logfile of HijackThis v1.99.1

If anyone can help me restore this computer to its normal, happily wirelessly networked, control panel possessing self, I would be most grateful. Thanks in advance for taking time to look at this post.

Hi there sorry for the delay

OK some malware is hiding from me so I would like to run an analysis tool first to see the current state of play.

I see you have Superantispyware, if you have version 4 then run the programme and select Preferences/Options. Go to the repair tab and select Enable Windows Control Panel. Then click Perform Repair.

Please download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) and save it to your Desktop.
  • Close all other windows before proceeding.
  • Double-click on dss.exe and follow the prompts.
  • When it has finished, dss will open two Notepads main.txt and extra.txt -- please copy (CTRL+A and then CTRL+C) and paste (CTRL+V) the contents of main.txt and extra.txt in your next reply.

Thanks for your help. I do not see an option for enabling control panel on the repair tab of Super antiSpy. I see several other options, but that doesn't seem to be one of them. I must be missing something.

I updated to version 4 and found the option to enable Control Panel, but unfortunantly, it didn't restore the Control Panel. Thanks for taking time to help me resolve this issue.

Whilst I analyze your log could you download the attached reg fix. Unzip it to your desktop. then right click and select merge. Reboot and let me know what happens

Thank you so much. That worked for the Control Panel. It is back up and running. The wireless connection is still saying limited or no connectivity, even though the the signal is strong. So I still have a problem, but I feel like we are on the road to a solution.

Since Control Panel is now working, I unistalled and reinstalled the wireless card again. This time everything seems to be working perfectly. I will wait for your analysis to determine if there are more problems lurking that haven't surfaced just yet. But for now, all seems well. Thank you so very much for your help. :)

Ok having reveiwed your DSS log I see that you have removed a lot of entries with Hijackthis - what I would like you to do is restore them all as there are a few for the wireless connection there. Plus I also found this which I am researching now

Windows was unable to load the registry. This is often caused by insufficient memory or insufficient security rights.

DETAIL - Access is denied. for C:\Documents and Settings\LocalService\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Windows\\UsrClass.dat

P.S Having just seen your other post Could you produce a new Hijackthis log please

Hi again your log looks OK - none of the backups removed by Hijackthis were malicious so if everything is running OK now

Now the best part of the day ----- Your log now appears clean :)

You may now remove the programmes I had you download

Now to get you off to a good start we will re-set your restore points so that all the bad stuff is gone for good. Then if you need to restore at some stage you will be clean. There are several ways to reset your your restore point but this is my method:

1. Select Start > All Programs > Accessories > System tools > System Restore.
2. On the dialogue box that appears select Create a Restore Point
3. Click NEXT
4. Enter a name e.g. Clean
5. Click CREATE

You now have a clean restore point, to get rid of the bad ones:

1. Select Start > All Programs > Accessories > System tools > Disk Cleanup.
2. In the Drop down box that appears select your main drive e.g. C
3. Click OK
4. The System will do some calculation and the display a dialogue box with TABS
5. Select the More Options Tab.
6. At the bottom will be a system restore box with a CLEANUP button click this
7. Accept the Warning and select OK again, the program will close and you are done

Now that you are clean, to help protect your computer in the future I recommend that you get the following free program:
  • SpywareBlaster to help prevent spyware from installing in the first place.
It is critical to have both a firewall and anti virus to protect your system and to keep them updated.

To keep your operating system up to date visit

To learn more about how to protect yourself while on the internet read this article by Tony Klien: So how did I get infected in the first place?

Keep safe :)
