My computer has been running slow the past couple of days and has froze up a couple of times, i've tried to clear my private data (firefox), ran a scan in safe mode (AVG) which nothing was found. i went into my temp files manually and saw that one file won't delete, BCG2.tmp. i also defraged the computer, still slow.

I know you will see two antivirus programs but one is trash left over from a mcafee that wouldn't uninstall and their tool left the trash.

Hi playa_in_mind,
Sorry or the delay in response, as you know this place gets very busy.

Lets get a deeper look at whats going on there:
Download WinPFind35U.exe (BETA) to your Desktop and double-click on it to extract the files. It will create a folder named WinPFind35u on your desktop.
  • Close any open browsers.
  • Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of WinpFind35U.

    -----------------------------------------------------------

    • Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before performing a scan. They can interfere with WinpFind35U or remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results".
    • Click on this link to see a list of programs that should be disabled. The list is not all inclusive. If yours is not listed and you don't know how to disable it, please ask.

      -----------------------------------------------------------

  • Open the WinPFind3u folder and double-click on WinPFind3U.exe to start the program.
  • Now click the Run Scan button on the toolbar.
  • The program will be scanning huge amounts of data so depending on your system it could take a long time to complete. Let it run unhindered until it finishes.
  • When the scan is complete Notepad will open with the report file loaded in it.
  • Save that notepad file
Use the Reply button and attach the notepad file here (Do not copy and paste in a reply, rather attach it to it).

Please note that it might take me some time to reply, I have a very busy schedule right now :)
Just hang in there, I will get back to you!

when you click ok a second one pops up

"The specified module could not be found"

These are the default settings that winpfind35u had:

Ok playa_in_mind,
This tool might give me the information required, lets try a scan with this:

Please download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) and save it to your Desktop.
  • Close all other windows before proceeding.
  • Double-click on dss.exe and follow the prompts.
  • When it has finished, dss will open two Notepads main.txt and extra.txt -- please copy (CTRL+A and then CTRL+C) and paste (CTRL+V) the contents of main.txt and extra.txt in your next reply.

No worries playa_in_mind,
Some of the scans pop things up like those warnings for a reason, I'll look into it in the morning :)

Ok playa_in_mind,
couple of quesstinable things there. First thing I would like you to do is remove limewire, you got it running there and that can create more problems as we go along. Allthough there is some use for P2P programs :) they open the door for infections to get into your machine.

Download ComboFix from one of the locations below, and save it to your Desktop.

Link 1
Link 2
Link 3

Double click combofix.exe and follow the prompts. Please, never rename Combofix unless instructed.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log and a HiJackthis log in your next reply
Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while its running. That may cause it to stall

no, that program came with the computer, i left it on there because it was actually quite helpful but it started messing up and pretty soon didn't work at all so i uninstalled it. it started slowing down while my son was playing a game, it froze up so i ended it in the task manager, and restarted the game but it took forever to load so i ended the process again. it is a game he has played a lot and never had this problem. i think AVG did an update during the game, i don't know. but the that night, my AVG spyware did a scan on its own, which i didn't understand because it hasn't be doing that. It found like 15 suspicious or infected files. i quarantined them and noticed a little change in the speed. i performed an analyzation of the c drive to see if it needed defrag'd but it said it didn't. i went through and uninstalled any program i had on the computer that i didnt use or need, deleted all the trash left over by those programs, found a few old programs and deleted them, then i restarted the computer and checked the defrag again. this time it said it needed it so i did it. after another restart i noticed the speed picked back up some more. i went through and did some of the hints and tricks on G2G with the firefox and that helped more. after combo fix its almost back to normal, still slower but i can live with the speed its at now.

did you see anything bad on the logs? i can understand them a little but not enough to do it myself, i didn't see anything really alarming......did you?

Hey playa_in_mind,
I just went through the logs again and you look like you are good to go. Just to note, AVG will cause the machine to really slow down when it scans. You can go to the control panel and schedule when you want it to scan, or manually stop the scan if you believe that is the reason for the slowdown.

I have read a bunch of your posts, and I think you have a pretty good idea of what you are doing. Still....
Anti-Virus programs take up an enormous amount of your computer's resources when they are actively scanning your computer. Having two anti-virus programs running at the same time can cause your computer to run very slow, become unstable and even, in rare cases, crash.

If you choose to install more than one Anti-Virus program on your computer, then only one of them should be active in memory at a time.

There are basically two types of these programs:
On-Access and On-Demand

On-Access Scanners
As the name implies, are scanners that run in the background all the time the PC is turned on and running. The main function of an On-Access scanner is to monitor activity on your machine.

On-Demand Scanners
As the name implies, are scanners that only run when you ask them to.
Such as:
Online Scans and scanners that run on your machine but are not actively scanning your machine.

I suggest that you continue to keep the "installed" programs to a minimum, keep away from the P2P's, and check back every now and then :)
Written by one of the best, check out the recommended prevention methods HERE

Unless there is any other issues, this thread will be closed :)

well actually, I was wondering what you were talking about having more than one anti-virus installed on the computer....to my knowledge I only have AVG installed. I have the spyware and the anti-virus, is that what you are talking about? I was using Defender Pro 5 in 1 but condensed it to just the firewall because it was easily blocked from quarantining or healing suspicious or infected files. I was also wondering what program you thought was the best anti-virus/spyware and firewall was. Is AVG the best, just upgrade to the premium or is there a better one in your opinion?

I know that the updates and scans slow the computer down, but everything returns to normal almost instantly afterwards, it just got me a little worried because the speed never returned and it was an all of the sudden kind of thing. I didn't see anything that would have slowed the computer down like that in my log, the only thing i could think of was that the update caused a shift in files or something causing a defrag to be necessary. I just didn't catch it until I restarted the computer, would something like that happen?

As far as P2P, i don't use it that much. I will download a song that I like (mostly old songs from when i was younger) listen to it for a week or so and delete it. I scan everything I download (which I know isn't 100% effective), and try to use common sense when choosing the file to download.

Anyway, I really appreciate you taking time to help me.
