The problem is getting worse and help is NEEDED.
On load, windows is now coming up with a blue screen - no desktop. Strangely the mouse is there. If click on Task Bar it comes up BUT it is now looping more and more often. Occassionaly it allows a program to start (then the desktop appears) BUT most programs won't start and even trying to turn of the computer is difficult.
There hass got to be a virus - a trojan something but I don't know what to do.
Help. Please.
All programs seem to lock.

I will need more information before I can assist you

Download & Run HijackThis.exe

  • Download HJTInstall.exe to your Desktop.
  • Doubleclick HJTInstall.exe to install it.
  • By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis .
  • Click on Install.
  • It will create a HijackThis icon on the desktop.
  • Once installed, it will launch Hijackthis.
  • Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button. It will scan and the log should open in notepad.
  • Copy/Paste the log to your next reply please.
Don't use the Analyse This button, its findings are dangerous if misinterpreted.
Don't have Hijackthis fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

I know this probably sounds like I cannot read but: Trend Micro House Call is running. Should I stop it and well ... "Do What I am told" or shut it down and ... Do What I am told?
Thank YOU.

Disregard the above ... because the guy at this end of the line did not wait long enough for a reply. Trend Micro is still running. I will repost as requested when it finishes. With apologies.

From reading the other post I gather that the main problem at the moment is multiple instances of LUCALLBACKPROXY.EXE running, this is a known fault with Symantecs programme and I found this - does it apply to you ?

Norton has released a new version of NIS 2007 called 2007.1. Registered users of NIS 2007 are eligible to download the new versions of NIS for free at: http://www.symantec.com/newnis/. It is not automatically updated by Live Update or Intelligent Updater.

You are just a font of knowledge. Never received any 'notice' from dependable Symantec notifying me of this. There are times I wonder why I use their products ... again and again. (I am downloading it.)
Just as an aside:
Acquaintances who have encountered various computer issues (usually viruses but not always) have spent a lot of money going to stores and to get such things 'fixed' and not always satisfactorially). I have encouraged a goodly number to utilize Geeks To Go as a spot where it seems one can get better service and satisfaction than elsewhere.
Some time ago, I had a very serious infection whereby I went to a computer center here (Staples/Office Depot) and asked for help. They informed me only reformatting my drive would cure the problem and I would lose all files and programs. Instead I tried, for the first time, Geekstogo, and while it took 3 days, I lost nary a file nor a 'dollar/shilling/pence'. To me that is testimony enough to the people who assist others, especially those of us who are technically challenged.
You were one of those people.

Unfortunately that is usually the answer as it is a faster fix for them (no knowledge required) and thay can still charge a pretty penny for it !

After you have downloaded and installed the fix could you let me know how your system is running

This is the completed Hijack This file after TrendMicro did the Virus Check. It said there was one severe operating system problem, sent me to MSoft and I just let it check for updates and load what it said.
This is the point now. Everything still seems to be slow. Opening files was slow, not in sense that I wanted things to happen faster rather that the files were looping.

I was a little slow in letting you know about the 'fix'. It simply stated that it did not apply to Norton 360. Thus one supposes the answer is no. I have shut down and restarted the system but because it needed to update windows with 88 files (heavens knows, it has been on auto update for years). That took time on the restart.
As I sit here looking at the screen I notice that the arrow has the hour glass going on and off at intervals (sometimes as long as 5 seconds on). No new messages here ergo not sure why. Another piece of info that may assist you. Yesterday after doing the virus checks (92 x by Norton 360 and 2 x by Trend Micro House Call the latter's decision for 2x) I re-loaded Windows XP from Disk wondering if one of my issues could have been (a) missing windows file. It seemed to work better after that for a bit (half hour) then re-verted to looping and locking more and more, hence my sort of panic earlier today.
I appreciate your time and efforts.

OK when you re-installed windows did you do a clean install or an over the top install. You would need all the updates either way because it would revert to the files on the CD i.e. old ones. Lets try a clean up first as I can see nothing yet in your log. On completion I will do a deeper analysis

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
This program is for XP and Windows 2000 onlyDouble-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
If you use Firefox browserClick Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
If you use Opera browserClick Opera at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
For Technical Support, double-click the e-mail address located at the bottom of each menu.

THEN

Prefetch is clickable for more information

Click start then run, type prefetch then press enter, click edit then select all, (all files will highlight), right click any file, click delete, confirm

Click start then all programmes, accessories, system tools to run disc clean up

Reboot

Click start then all programmes, accessories, system tools to run defragmenter

Download, install and run
Tune Up 2007 Trial

Run Tune Up disc clean up

Run Tune Up registry clean up

Then click Optimize and Improve to run Reg Defrag, the screen will lose colour during the process which can take a few minutes and then needs a reboot

Those will have cleared the drive of obsolete software errors

These are suggestions for making the most of the free trial

Click optimize and improve then system optimizer to optimize the computer, select computer with an internet connection from the drop down menu, this also requires a reboot

After the reboot, click optimize then system optimizer to accelerate downloads, select the speed just above your actual connection speed, this requires a reboot.

After the reboot, click optimize then system optimizer to run system advisor

FINALLY

Please download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) and save it to your Desktop.
  • Close all other windows before proceeding.
  • Double-click on dss.exe and follow the prompts.
  • When it has finished, dss will open two Notepads main.txt and extra.txt -- please copy (CTRL+A and then CTRL+C) and paste (CTRL+V) the contents of main.txt and extra.txt in your next reply.

essexboy,
It is now 9:45 approx here in London Ontario Canada and I will continue to do all that is requested and post the results. It may not get posted until tomorrow morning (which will, I recognize not have you sitting waiting for me). I expect that you will get back to me likewise when time presents itself.
With thanks for the moment ... and now ... back to the tasks you have set ...

Back with you 10:10 am E.S.T. ((same as Toronto or New York for quick calculation). Bright Cold and lots of snow in the last couple of days. Realize none of that has anything to do with this but we are humans ... so a little of where i am). In any case have done all that you have requested and below are the two key files you requested from DSS:
[[TWO COPIES FOLLOW 1 DONE WITH CNTRL KEYS, THE SECOND WITH COPY PASTE VIA MOUSE ... JUST FOR SAFETY BUT THEY ARE THE SAME).
