Sorry to be so slow but have been working AFAPossible. Chose one file (KB927891) which it suggested affected downloading of some installation files. Tried to install only it. This was met by failure and the same message before via a via the KB894391 Windows 3.1 installer file.
Would it be worth re-installing windows and updating to SP2 plus updates to see if that circumvents trying to find this single file seeing there are so many. If the one they suggest (and we tried) would do the trick ... far far easier). I just do not want to have you struggle so hard. (To be truthful that is a lie because getting this far was impossible without you).
You must be exastperated.

Nope I like mysteries....You must be exastperated.
Ok you mention SP2 yet according to your Hijackthis log you have SP2 installed. So herein may lie the problem
If you have the SP2 update disc Then install over the top of your current installation - that way nothing gets lost..
Also could you copy and paste or attach the log found in the following location, this is the update record
C:\Windows\Windows Update.log
You may need to make system folders visible to find it
To enable the viewing of Hidden files follow these steps:
Close all programs so that you are at your desktop.
Double-click on the My Computer icon.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
After the new window appears select the View tab.
Put a checkmark in the checkbox labeled Display the contents of system folders.
Under the Hidden files and folders section select the radio button labeled Show hidden files and folders.
Remove the checkmark from the checkbox labeled Hide file extensions for known file types.
Remove the checkmark from the checkbox labeled Hide protected operating system files.
Press the Apply button and then the OK button and close My Computer.
Now your computer is configured to show all hidden files.

Wow.
I have not as yet done the SP2 install.
I did do the update.log file by doin RUN: c:\windows\windowsupdate.log . (Because the c:\Windows\Windows Update.log did not appear)
What I got was massive.
It must be 20 pages long and mostly covers the last 2 - 3 days. It was so long that it would NOT paste here.
I could do a section where it appears there has been a request for an update running into the next one on the same day that failed if that is worth anything.
Await directions.

Hope this is not info overload. Within Windows I have just found txt.log for most of the update files that it has been attempting to download including the one it labels Windows installer. (KP893903). It is, compared to the one requested able to be posted.

Hi could you attach the last 24 hours of that log - I need some light reading It will probably pinpoint the general area of the problem

Just prior to doing that. I have re-installed (UPDATED as windows install recommended) Windows XP SP2 form disk.
Will attempt an update from MSoft if you think that adviseable prior to sending you that file.

good news BAD NEWS
a) The windows 3.1 installer (two files) downloaded and installed.
b) Bad news: 95 updates failed to INSTALL but all downloaded.
for just a minute eureka... then reality.
Will now get the win log file and try to give you the last 24 hours of lite reading
