I've rolled back the installation, I've reinstalled it, but visualizations for music playing on WMP won't show. They're in the list but the screen stays black. I've even downloaded new ones but they won't show either. What could the problem be. On XP. I can watch videos by the way.

Hello wright3279,

Does it make a difference if it is full screen, normal, or small mode? Try the following instructions:
What To Do When . . . Windows Media Player Won’t Show Visualizations

Regards,

Doesn't matter what mode it's in. Device manager shows no problems. I think the core installation just lost the relevant part and all the updates and rollbacks don't touch that part. Oh well. I can easily live without it. Thanks.

You're welcome. As one final option, you can try following the instructions in this MS KB article:
You cannot view, add, or delete items in the library in Windows Media Player 11
It may not be directly related, but indirectly yes.
