my laptop runs fine but the battery in the icon tray doesnt charge when i plug it into the socket. It just sits at 3%! what happened??? and when i take out of the socket it says please charge your laptop. Whats wrong?

Battery may have simply 'worn out'. They don't last indefinitely. One common mistake causing premature battery failure is to leave the battery module in place when your running on AC power regularly or for long periods. This eventually overcharges the battery to the point where it just won't charge up properly any more or hold the charge that was in it. Correct procedure is to fully charge when new then remove it whenever laptop is running on mains power.
