My AVG scanner found a virus that it cannot heal. The program calls it an HTML/Framer and it was found in:

C:\Documents and Settings\User for now\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\HYMOGJG2\index[1].htm

1) Download ATF Cleaner by Atribune from here and save it to your Desktop.
Double click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Check the boxes to the left of:
Windows Temp
Current User Temp
All Users Temp
Temporary Internet Files
Java Cache

The rest are optional - if you want to remove the lot, check "Select All".
Finally click Empty Selected. When you get the "Done Cleaning" message, click OK.

If you use the Firefox or Opera browsers, you can use this program as a quick way to tidy those up as well.

When you have finished, click on the Exit button in the Main menu.

For Technical Support, double-click the e-mail address located at the bottom of each menu.

This should deal with your original problem. The following will identify anything that may be still hiding on your PC:

2) Go here and click the Kaspersky Online Scanner button - I.E. is required for this scan.
  • Read the Requirements and limitations before you click Accept.
  • Allow the ActiveX download if necessary.
  • Once the database has downloaded click Next.
  • Click Scan Settings and check the "Scan using the following antivirus database" is set to extended, not standard, and then click OK.
  • Click on "My Computer" and then put the kettle on!
  • When the scan has completed, click Save Report As...
  • Enter a name for the file in the Filename: text box and then click the down arrow to the right of Save as type: and select text file (*.txt)
  • Click Save - by default the file will be saved to your Desktop, but you can change this if you wish.
Copy and paste the report into your next reply along with a fresh HJT log, run in Normal Mode, and a description of how your PC is behaving.

Note for Internet Explorer 7 users: If at any time you have trouble with the accept button of the licence, click on the Zoom tool located at the right bottom of the IE window and set the zoom to 75 %. Once the license accepted, reset to 100%.

3) Also, run HJT and click on Open the Misc Tools section.
  • Click Open Uninstall Manager...
  • Click Save list... and save it to your Desktop.
  • Copy and paste the file uninstall_list.txt into your next reply.

My computer is running very slowly and I haven't been able to help it. Starting up the computer takes around 10 minutes and starting up programs is usually delayed by a few seconds to minutes

When did this start and did you do anything that could account for it - install any programs, delete anything, any hints at all gratefully received.

This probably started months ago. I used to download a lot of music from Lime Wire and I didn't bother to check for malware, When I used F-Secure to check for viruses, I found out that there were about 8000 viruses in the folder where the downloaded music goes to, so I deleted it (I had to replace f-secure as well because the virus definitions were not updating). Also I didn't often do virus checks and when I found viruses on my computer that I could not delete from the scanner, I left it because I didn't know what to do. sometimes I'll download games from the internet, as well as images and videos, and may not perform a virus check after.

If you had stated this in your first post I would have recommended reformatting straight away. File sharing has it's risks as you know well and running your PC in this haphazard way is a recipe for disaster. Downloading anything from the internet is a risky business, and not scanning files before opening them also poses a danger.
I suggest that you back up any important files and then reformat and reinstall and start afresh. I'd also not bother to reinstall Limewire as this won't be the last time you mess up your OS if you continue to fileshare. I'll also mention the legal implications if you should choose to download copyrighted content.
There's no way of knowing exactly what harm has been done to your system, and also what may have been messed up. If security settings have been lowered, this will make your PC more likely to be reinfected in future.
I'd also keep one eye on your bank accounts if you access them via this computer or shop online as malware does have the ability to harvest financial information and phone it home. I don't see a firewall installed, which means that it would have been free to do this - if you are relying on the Windows one that comes with SP2, it doesn't monitor outbound connections which makes it less than perfect. I can let you have some links to free pones if you wish.

Thank you for your help, I really appreciate this.

I could use those links, that would be really helpful. Also, I don't know how to reformat my computer properly, so I need some instructions.

For the reformatting help, post here and explain why you need to wipe the PC: http://www.geekstogo...2003-NT-f5.html
Some PCs have hidden partitions that enable you to Factory Restore and they'll know if you have and how to access it. Different manufacturers have different tricks, partly to make sure that you don't do this by accident. Mine involves holding down the left shift key while clicking a spot on a picture - sadly true!

There are a few free firewalls available.
Zone Alarm: Available here.
Kerio: Available here.
Outpost: Available here.
Comodo: Available here.

It is important to note that you should only have one firewall installed at a time, but you can download them all to your Desktop and install each in turn to see which one you prefer.
Understanding and Using Firewalls: http://www.bleepingc...tutorial60.html
There are others, the one that is getting good reviews at the minutes is Online Armore free, but I don't have any experience of it myself.

Hi, andrewreturned :)

Not withstanding my colleagues suggestions, before you reformat, let me give it a try.

Please download ComboFix from Here or Here to your Desktop.

**Note: In the event you already have Combofix, this is a new version that I need you to download. It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop**
  • Please, never rename Combofix unless instructed.
  • Close any open browsers.
  • Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

    -----------------------------------------------------------

    • Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before performing a scan. They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results".
    • Click on this link to see a list of programs that should be disabled. The list is not all inclusive. If yours is not listed and you don't know how to disable it, please ask.

      -----------------------------------------------------------

    • Close any open browsers.
    • WARNING: Combofix will disconnect your machine from the Internet as soon as it starts
    • Please do not attempt to re-connect your machine back to the Internet until Combofix has completely finished.
    • If there is no internet connection after running Combofix, then restart your computer to restore back your connection.

    -----------------------------------------------------------

  • Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • When finished, it will produce a report for you.
  • Please post the "C:\ComboFix.txt" along with a new HijackThis log for further review.
**Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall**

Hi, andrewreturned :)

You have too many programs running in the background.

Please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, the Advanced Options Menu should appear;
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press Enter.
  • Choose your usual account.
.
Using Windows Explorer (to get there right-click your Start button and go to "Explore"), please delete this file (if present):

C:\Program Files\Morpheus\morpheustoolbar.exe

Go to Start->Run, type Msconfig and click Ok. The configuration utility will be displayed. Select the Startup tab. Deselect all entries from the list except for the following:

AVG7_CC
AVG7_Run
NvCplDaemon
SUPERAntiSpyware

Click on Apply, then on Close. Restart the computer when prompted.

Upon restart you will be confronted with a dialogue box warning about running in selective startup. Just ignore that message and put a check in the box by "Don't show me this message or launch the System Configuration Utility when Windows starts" and click "OK". You will not be bothered by the message again.

Keep in mind that some entries will be re-enabled in the startups each time you use that particular program. Therefore, you will have to find the option in that programs preferences that says something like "Load with Windows" or "Run when Windows Starts" and disable that option.

The following programs are the source of all type of malware.

LimeWire
Morpheus
morpheustoolbar

Many peer-to-peer networks are under constant attack by people with a variety of motives.

Examples include:
  • poisoning attacks (e.g. providing files whose contents are different than the description)
  • denial of service attacks (attacks that may make the network run very slowly or break completely)
  • defection attacks (users or software that make use of the network without contributing resources to it)
  • insertion of viruses to carried data (e.g. downloaded or carried files may be infected with viruses or other malware)
  • malware in the peer-to-peer network software itself (e.g. distributed software may contain spyware)
  • filtering (network operators may attempt to prevent peer-to-peer network data from being carried)
  • identity attacks (e.g. tracking down the users of the network and harassing or legally attacking them)
  • spamming (e.g. sending unsolicited information across the network- not necessarily as a denial of service attack)
I would suggest you remove these programs from your computer.

Here are some routine maintenance practices that you should do on a regular basis to keep your machine running efficiently. Hopefully going through these steps will solve the problems you are having with the pc being slow:

Disk Cleanup:

http://www.theelderg...nup_utility.htm

Defrag your HD:

http://artsweb.bham....rag-win2kxp.htm

Run chkdsk:

To use Chkdsk, click Start and My Computer. Right-click the hard drive you want to check, and click Properties. Select the Tools tab and click Check Now. Check both boxes. Click Start. You'll get a message that the computer must be rebooted to run a complete check. Click Yes and reboot. Chkdsk will take awhile, so run it when you don't need to use the computer for something else.

Let me know how is the computer after going thoughout this process.

My computer is starting to run more normally now. The delays are not as common anymore and starting up the computer is quicker. I'm still wondering if there are any ways that I could improve the speed of my computer.

That all depends. There are many factors to take in consideration besides the above. CPU Speed, Video Speed, amount of RAM, size and disk space of you hard drive (amount of programs installed will reduce the diskspace). By increasing your RAM, you will be increasing your work space, thus allowing the computer to work with ease, and an increase in speed will be noticed. By removing programs no longer used, you will shrink the amount of disk space used, thus improving the computer's ability to obtain information. That will also improve your speed.

I am glad to learn the system has improved. :)
