Are you connected to the modem directly, or are you using a router?
The "ping 127.0.0.1" is only for the purpose of testing your NIC.
This test does not concern your INTERNET connection.

Just for fun, unplug your modem for about 10 seconds.
After you plug it back in let all of the lights come on before you try the Internet.
What firewall are you using?
Please let me know the results of the ping.

The ping results tell me that your [/b]NIC[/b] is working correctly.
They also tell me that you do not have a Firewall that is blocking Internet connection.
