I hope you wonderful folks can help me. Two weeks ago I got a couple of notices from Windows File Protection that certain files had been replaced. The alerts asked me for a Windows XP Professional CD2; as I have XP Media Edition, I had no such disk to give it. I ran System File Checker, which again asked for the Professional CD. Meanwhile, IE and AOL started freezing for a couple of minutes when I started either. (I know, I know -- AOL. I've had the same email addy for ten years, and it's old habit to sign in and check it.) Shutting off the toolbars and add-ons fixed IE; downloading a new version of AOL somehow fixed the old version. I didn't get more errors, so I stuck my head in the sand and hoped it was fixed.

When I turned the computer on two days ago, Windows Installer popped up and tried to install HP Product Assistant and asked me for the HP disk. But Product Assistant is already installed; it's part of the software that came with a 3-in-1 I installed two years ago. I can stop this by going into msconfig and disabling anything HP-related from startup (I did remember to return to default startup settings before running any scans recommended by this forum).

At the same time, I got the Windows File Protection alert again. I also got an alert from Norton that trojan.zonebac had been found and fixed. As soon as I clicked out of that alert, I got another that the same virus had been found in another location. All in all, Norton found around ten trojan.zonebacs.

Since then I've restarted several times, and I haven't gotten any more errors or alerts, except that Windows Installer still wants to install the HP program. But the computer seems slow in general when I first boot it up in the morning. It's like it has to think a lot longer than it used to before all this started. I'm really hoping to avoid wiping it clean and starting over -- I make my living on this silly thing, and I'm paranoid the trojan is still lurking. I try my best to keep everything clean, but I share the computer with two other family members.

I've read the "You Must Read This Before..." post; I've done everything on the list except for getting rid of the old System Restore points. System Restore has never worked for me (it always, always fails when I try to restore to an earlier point) so I wasn't sure it was necessary -- let me know if I should go back and complete that step. I ran ATF Cleaner, scanned in safe mode with AVG Spyware (which didn't create a report, even though I had it set to do so, as instructed), scanned with SUPERAntiSpyware, and scanned with Panda Activescan. I've also run several complete scans with my up-to-date Norton. Windows Update says I'm up to date and doesn't have any critical updates to recommend.

Here's the result of the SUPERAntiSpyware scan:

Hello

Please download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) and save it to your Desktop.
  • Close all other windows before proceeding.
  • Double-click on dss.exe and follow the prompts.
  • If your anti-virus or firewall complains, please allow this script to run as it is not malicious.
  • When it has finished, dss will open two Notepads main.txt and extra.txt -- please copy (CTRL+A and then CTRL+C) and paste (CTRL+V) the contents of main.txt and extra.txt in your next reply.

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from Here or Here

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
  • The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply.
Extra Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process,if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediatly.

The same -- it's functional, but it's slow at startup, and it "thinks" a lot more than before all this started. Windows Installer still pops up 4-6 times at startup and tries to install HP Product Assistant, which is already installed. I don't know if that issue's connected, but it started right when Norton found the trojan. I can prevent it by going into msconfig, but I didn't want to treat the symptom without investigating the underlying cause.

Does the system look safe to use?

Yes it is perfectly safe to use, clean as a whistle.

Few things to do

You now need to update your Java and remove your older versions.

Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components.

* Click Start > Control Panel.
* Click Add/Remove Programs.
* Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE) in the name.
* Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.

Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE), and install it to your computer from
here

Your using an old version of Adobe Acrobat Reader, this can leave your pc open to vulnerabilities, you can update it here :
http://www.adobe.com.../readstep2.html

Now we need to create a new System Restore point.

Click Start Menu > Run > type (or copy and paste)

%SystemRoot%\System32\restore\rstrui.exe

Press OK. Choose Create a Restore Point then click Next. Name it and click Create, when the confirmation screen shows the restore point has been created click Close.

Next goto Start Menu > Run > type

cleanmgr

Click OK, Disk Cleanup will open and start calculating the amount of space that can be freed, Once thats finished it will open the Disk Cleanup options screen, click the More Options tab then click Clean up on the system restore area and choose Yes at the confirmation window which will remove all the restore points except the one we just created.

To close Disk Cleanup and remove the Temporary Internet Files detected in the initial scan click OK then choose Yes on the confirmation window.

Below I have included a number of recommendations for how to protect your computer against malware infections.

* Keep Windows updated by regularly checking their website at :
http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/
This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer.

* To reduce re-infection for malware in the future, I strongly recommend installing these free programs:
SpywareBlaster protects against bad ActiveX
IE-SPYAD puts over 5000 sites in your restricted zone so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all
Have a look at this tutorial for IE-Spyad here

* SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.

Make Internet Explorer more secure
  • Click Start > Run
  • Type Inetcpl.cpl & click OK
  • Click on the Security tab
  • Click Reset all zones to default level
  • Make sure the Internet Zone is selected & Click Custom level
  • In the ActiveX section, set the first two options ("Download signed and unsigned ActiveX controls) to "Prompt", and ("Initialize and Script ActiveX controls not marked as safe") to "Disable".
  • Next Click OK, then Apply button and then OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

* MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well known ad sites and other bad sites. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer, meaning it will be difficult to infect yourself in the future.

* Please consider using an alternate browser. Mozilla's Firefox browser is fantastic; it is much more
secure than Internet Explorer, immune to almost all known browser hijackers, and also has the best built-in pop up
blocker (as an added benefit!) that I have ever seen. If you are interested, Firefox may be downloaded from
Here

* Take a good look at the following suggestions for malware prevention by reading Tony Klein’s article 'How Did I Get Infected In The First Place'
Here

Thank you for your patience, and performing all of the procedures requested.

Whew, thank you! I'm in the process of installing your recommended updates, and the Adobe Reader update won't install. I'm getting an alert from Adobe Reader 8.1.2 Installer Information:

"Error 1406. Could not write value to key \Software\Classes\TypeLib\{a loooong number I can type out if you need it}. Verify that you have sufficient access to that key, or contact your support personnel."

Is that a big deal?

No that's not a big deal

I've seen this problem before, not sure how you fix it. Don't worry if you can't update Adobe though

Let me know how the rest of the tasks go

I think I've finished everything aside from the Adobe update. I do use Firefox when I think of it -- old IE habits just die hard. :) Should I go ahead and use msconfig to disable the HP program Windows keeps trying to reinstall?

Just when I thought it was safe to go back in the water... Tonight Norton updated and wanted to run a full scan. It found Trojan.Advatrix in the program file for something called WinBudget. According to Norton, the trojan's been fully resolved. Should I get rid of this WinBudget thing entirely? What's the best way to do that? The properties for the WinBudget folder say it was created Jan 28, which is when I had the original bunch of computer issues.

Everything's running about the same, maybe a little faster. I ran all the scans again, just in case (paranoia!), and I didn't come up with any more trojans or anything other than the occasional tracking cookie. Should I be concerned by the fact that it took so many scans to find the trojan.advatrix?

One more thing -- I googled trojan.advatrix and read that it registers a matrix.dll (which I assume would live in the WinBudget folder?) as a Browser Helper Object. I did a search on my computer and found a Matrix.dll, but it's located at C:\Program Files\Dell Support Center\HWDiag\bin . Is that something different, or is it connected to the trojan?

(Sorry for the endless concerns. I've been babysitting my family's computers for a decade, and I've never had any of these problems pop up before. I'm still totally unnerved.)

No need to be concerned.

Seems to be something different since your logs are clean, I would leave it alone.

Your logs are clean, any more questions ?
