There is a lot of info on this problem on the internet . Heres 2 you need to look at.

I also heard that if you try clearing your proxy setting under Start -> Settings > Connections Tab it will clear up the problem. I have not tried this yet!

You may receive an "Error 0x80072EE2," "Error 0x80072EE7," "Error 0x80072EFD," "Error

thanks SRX660....I am not running through a proxy and the box is unchecked. I am unable to connect to any of the microsoft sites for some reason. I tried using IE and firefox. I tried "restoring advanced settings" in IE and even tried resetting IE settings. I have allowed the sites through my firewall ..nothing thus far is working :)

Manual steps to resolve error messages on the Windows Update or Microsoft Update Web site
To manually resolve this issue, use method 1 or method 2.
Method 1: Home users or users who are not behind a proxy server
Step 1: Verify Internet connectivity
Make sure that you can successfully access other Web sites. If you can successfully access other Web sites, your Internet connection is working correctly.
Step 2: Verify your personal firewall program settings
If you have a personal firewall program installed, you might have to reconfigure or update the personal firewall program. The Windows Update client and the Microsoft Update client run in an instance of Svchost.exe. This Svchost.exe instance requires access to the Internet. For more information about how to reconfigure or update your firewall program, see the documentation that was included with the program, view the Help files for your program, or contact the program vendor. For information about how to contact the program vendor, click the appropriate article number in the following list to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:
65416 (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/65416/) Hardware and software vendor contact information, A-K

60781 (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/60781/) Hardware and software vendor contact information, L-P

60782 (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/60782/) Hardware and software vendor contact information, Q-Z
To troubleshoot and ensure any Firewall Programs you have running are not interfering with windows update try the following steps.

Important Before you disable the firewall for troubleshooting, turn on the Windows XP Internet Connection Firewall. To do this, follow these steps:
1. Click Start, click Control Panel, double-click Networking and Internet Connections, and then click Network Connections.
2. Right-click the connection on which you want to turn on the Internet Connection Firewall, and then click Properties.
3. On the Advanced tab, click the box to select the option to protect my computer or network.
Temporarily disable your Firewall program and see if you can now access the Microsoft Windows Update Website. Even though you may have had a Firewall running for some time without any previous problems, new updates to the firewall program may create issues.
Step 3: Disable software accelerator programs
Disable any software accelerator programs. Examples of these programs are file download accelerators and internet speed accelerators.
Step 4: Add the Windows Update Web site and the Microsoft Update Web site to the Trusted Sites list
Add the Windows Update Web site and the Microsoft Update Web site to the Trusted Sites list in Internet Explorer. To do this, follow these steps:
1. Start Microsoft Internet Explorer.
2. On the Tools menu, click Internet Options.
3. Click the Security tab, and then click Trusted Sites.
4. Click Sites, and then click to clear the Require server verification (https:) for all sites in this zone check box.
5. In the Add this Web site to the zone box, type the following addresses, clicking Add after you type each address:
6. Click OK two times.
Step 5: Remove entries for Windows Update and Microsoft Update from the hosts file
Some programs may modify the hosts file to control DNS name resolution. Sometimes, an entry for the Windows Update Web site or for the Microsoft Update Web site may exist in the hosts file. To remove these entries from the hosts file, follow these steps:
1. Click Start, click Run, type notepad %windir%\system32\drivers\etc\hosts, and then click OK.

Note If you are prompted to choose a program to open the hosts file with, click Notepad, click to select the Always use the selected program option, and then click OK.
2. In Notepad, configure any lines in the hosts file that contain entries for Windows Update so that they are not read when the file is accessed. To do this, place the number sign (#) in front of any line that contains "microsoft" and "update." For example, add the number sign (#) to the beginning of the following entries:
• # 64.4.21.125 http://update.microsoft.com
• # 64.4.21.125 http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com
3. Remove any lines that contain entries for Windows Update or for Microsoft Update. For example, remove the following entry if the entry exists:
http://update.microsoft.com
4. On the File menu, click Save.
5. Exit Notepad.
6. Restart the computer.

Note If you do not want to restart the computer, you can also flush the DNS resolver cache. To do this, follow these steps:
a. Click Start, click Run, type cmd, and then click OK.
b. At the command prompt, type ipconfig /flushdns, and then press ENTER.
Step 6: Remove the proxy server entry from the WinHTTP proxy configuration
If you are not located in a corporate network, or if you do not use a proxy server to connect to the Internet, clear the WinHTTP proxy configuration. To do this, follow these steps:
1. Open Internet Explorer.
2. On the Tools menu, click Internet Options.
3. Click the Connections tab, and then click LAN Settings.
4. In the Local Area Network (LAN) Settings dialog box, click to select the Automatically detect settings check box, and then click OK.
5. Quit Internet Explorer.
6. Click Start, click Run, type cmd, and then click OK.
7. Type the following commands. Press ENTER after each command.
a. proxycfg -d
b. net stop wuauserv
c. net start wuauserv
d. exit
Method 2: Corporate users or users who are behind a proxy server
If you use a proxy server to connect to the Internet, see the following Microsoft Knowledge Base (KB) article for information about how the Windows Update client detects and uses proxy servers:
900935 (http://support.micro....com/kb/900935/) How the Windows Update client determines which proxy server to use to connect to the Windows Update Web site

Windows Update error 80072ee2

Applies to all editions of Windows Vista.
Which edition of Windows Vista am I using?

If you receive Windows Update error 80072ee2 while checking for updates, you might need to add the website addresses from which Windows Update downloads updates to your firewall exceptions or "allow" list.

To add the Windows Update websites to a firewall exceptions list

• Windows Firewall ships with this version of Windows and should already include these sites in the exceptions list. If you use a different firewall, refer to the software publisher's help to see how to add these websites to your firewall exceptions list:

If the problem persists after you have followed the steps above, see this Knowledge Base article on the Microsoft Help and Support website or go to the Windows Update Support Center website to request support by e‑mail.

Thanks again SRX660....Still not working. I went to the bottom paragraph of your reply which pertains to Vista. I even tried shutting my firewall (Zonealarm) off and still nothing. I still cant get through to anything microsoft which means I cant even contact them for help. I have searched other sites for a solution and see that I am not the only one experiencing this but I cant find a solution.

First, make sure your time and date are set right, both in your OS and your BIOS. Check with your computer manufacturer for details on how to access your BIOS.
Then, try accessing M$ sites in Safe Mode. To do so, press the [F8] key as the computer is booting up, and that will open the Advanced Boot Options menu. Arrow to Safe Mode with Networking and press Enter. Your computer will start in Safe Mode. Log in just like you normally do, and try accessing a M$ site. If it works, it is definitely a software problem or conflict that is preventing you from accessing the sites. If it does not work, it is definitely a M$ problem.
Try to reset your Internet Explorer settings. You do this by clicking on the Tools button, then Internet Options. Click on the Advanced tab, then click the Reset button.
If this doesn't fix it, download Firefox and make sure you can access M$ sites. If you can, go to www.microsoft.com/ie and redownload IE7. Install it and try again.
Let us know what happens!

Thanks for the effort Admiral. I tried your instructions but with no luck. Even with Firefox I could not get through. I finally found one of the techs from my internet provider who had me set me MTU to 1362. He claimed that he is seeing this problem with Vista and doesnt know why it is occurring. When I set the MTU to 1362 it cleared up my problem.

Thanks for the effort Admiral and SRX660. I know you would of got it eventually.
