Hello,
I'm helping a friend that ran across the NetSky worm problem. I've tried to hatchet my way through by running the anti-spyware recommended here and Norton Anti-Virus but still having no luck getting everything back to speed here. I've managed to use some of the advice here in the forums to get rid of a majority of symptoms of NetSky, but this PC is running terribly slow and unstable.

Thank you for any help that you can provide!

Here is my Hijackthis log:

Hello

Open notepad, click Format, uncheck wordwrap

Please download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) and save it to your Desktop.
  • Close all other windows before proceeding.
  • Double-click on dss.exe and follow the prompts.
  • If your anti-virus or firewall complains, please allow this script to run as it is not malicious.
  • When it has finished, dss will open two Notepads main.txt and extra.txt -- please copy (CTRL+A and then CTRL+C) and paste (CTRL+V) the contents of main.txt and extra.txt in your next reply.

Hello

1. Please re-open HiJackThis and choose do a system scan only. Check the boxes next to ONLY the entries listed below(if present):

O8 - Extra context menu item: &Search - http://edits.mywebse...arch.jhtml?p=ZN

O21 - SSODL: aswmklt - {946F5E73-CE15-4580-AA78-2CAB2F3BAADA} - C:\WINDOWS\aswmklt.dll (file missing)

2. Now close all windows other than HiJackThis, including browsers, so that nothing other than HijackThis is open, then click Fix Checked. A box will pop up asking you if you wish to fix the selected items. Please choose YES. Once it has fixed them, please exit/close HijackThis.

Go to this site:
http://www.virustotal.com/
On top you'll find 'Browse'
Click the browse button and browse to the file:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\hphpmq.exe

Click open.
Then click the 'Send' button next to it.
This will scan the file. Please be patient.
Once scanned, copy and paste the results as well in your next reply.

Please download RUNSCANNER to your desktop and run it.
  • When the first page comes up select Beginner Mode
  • On the next page select Save a binary .Run file (Recommended) then click Start full scan at the top.
  • At this time Runscanner.exe may request access to the Internet through your firewall please allow it to do so, it will then run for two or three minutes.
  • On completion it will ask for a location to save the file and a name. It will do this for both the .run file and the log
  • Call the file "Select a file name here" and save it to your desktop. You will see the .run file on your desktop. Please zip the .run file by right clicking and selecting send to Zip file

Then upload that as an attachment in your next post.

Also post a new DSS log

I went ahead and fixed the items that you highlighted from hijack this, but I ran into a problem while browsing for this file (C:\WINDOWS\system32\hphpmq.exe) to use on virustotal.com. I went as far as using the file search but still came up empty. Is there a possibility that this file is hidden?

I've attached the runscanner logs. I will post the DSS.log either later tonight, or tommorrow because I'm not at this PC presently.

Thanks again for re-opening this thread.

Do this

Download the zipped attachment at the end of this post(this will be your runscanner as fixed by me)

  • Unzip it to your desktop then double click the runscanner icon this will run the program.
  • Click on the "Item Fixer" tab
  • You will notice several entries with a tick in red, click Fix checked.
  • Accept the warning then repeat until they are all gone.

Then reboot and post a new DSS log

I just wanted to ask you to please be patient with me and not close this thread. This PC that I'm asking your advice on is at another location. I appreciate the help and look to using the fixed runscanner and having the logs for you a day from now.
Thanks for your patience.

I just wanted to say thanks for your patience in waiting on me. This has been an interesting week with schedules and a winter ice storm that has hit my area this week. I also wanted to ask you about Windows Defender. When I restart this PC I have a message pop up that states that Windows Defender is missing a file and is not opperating properly. Is Windows defender a program that I really need since we are running multiple programs to keep this pc clean.

Here are the DSS logs that you asked for:

No you can remove Windows Defender if you wish

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from Here or Here

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Full Scan", then click Scan. Check all the boxes and click Start Scan
  • The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply.
Extra Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process,if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediatly.

Also tell me how your PC is running

Just wanted to mention that I have not forgotten about this, I've just have a hard time getting back and forth to this computer. I should be over there tommorrow to do the next step. Once again, thanks for your patience.

I also wanted to ask how do I go about uninstalling Windows Defender? I didn't notice an uninstall option for it.
