cd-dvd writer not acknowledged

my cd/dvd writer is not being acknowloedged by window media player.
i set up a cd to be recorded when media player says no cd writer present.

the one in question is NEC DVD+-RW ND-6500A and was installed in the laptop when bought.
it is running windows xp pro.

anyone any ideas whats happened.
