If its spyware/adware, you need to use something like spybot or ad-aware etc. These can be downloaded for free - just type spyware or adware removal into google & make sure you get the latest version.

If its a trojan, then this normally comes under the category of viruses (although, strictly speaking, the 2 are different). Trojan normally requires antivirus software to remove. However, this doesn't sound to me like a trojan, more like spyware or a virus.

How do you know its a "trojan-spy"?

on the desktop there is an error message. it says " a fatal error in IE has occured at 0028:c0011e36 in VXD VMM(01) + 0010E36. ERROR was caused by Trojan-spy.html.smithfraud.c. i keep getting pop-ups. and avg comes up to say there is a virus so i click on heal and it says it is healed but it does not help. norton anti virus will not work either. i also tried using ad-aware but maybe im not doing something right because it does not seem to help. :tazz:

smithfraud is a phishing scam trojan.
Have you received any emails requesting your bank or credit card details? I suggest you first download hijackthis from the link below :
http://majorgeeks.co...wnload3155.html

reboot the system in safe mode, open your email program & go through the in-box & deleted emails folder, look for any emails that request bank/credit card info & delete them. Then empty recycle bin.

Next run hijackthis & post the log in this thread.

First off, in hijackthis, place a check mark against the entries (also make a note of them on paper or copy & paste this post into a text file first) :

C\:wp.exe

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = res://C:\DOCUME~1\Owner\LOCALS~1\Temp\se.dll/spage.html

R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = res://C:\DOCUME~1\Owner\LOCALS~1\Temp\se.dll/spage.html

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [WindowsFY] c:\wp.exe

O16 - DPF: {24311111-1111-1121-1111-111191113457} - file://c:\eied_s7.cab

O16 - DPF: {33331111-1111-1111-1111-611111193457} - file://c:\ex.cab

close any open browsers or other windows. I would also shut down your anti virus tempoparily.
Let hijackthis fix the selected entries then reboot the system in safe mode.

Go through each of these entries (from your notes or text file etc) & also manually delete them, if they don't exist, don't worry about it.

Just delete the actual files etc, don't worry about the registry entries (like the ones that begin with R1) unless you are confident you know what you are doing.

I'm also suspiscious about the following entry, but not absolutely certain so ignore it for now but maybe someone else here can help with that?

Tell you what I'm gonna do.....I will tell you how to get into safe mode, delete files etc but I suggest that after that maybe, you post your hijack log in the Malware forum instead. They are better qualified than me to help you with this actual problem & I don't want to inadvertently muck your machine anymore than it already is!

Safe Mode
When you switch your PC on & the screen comes up, you should see it go through the POST test (ie does a memory check, finds hard drives). Once this has completed, you need to repeatedly press the F8 key. This should bring up a boot menu. From there select the SAFE MODE option & press enter.

ANTI-VIRUS
You should be able to turn off the anti virus from the AVG icon in the system tray (row of icons next to the clock in windows). Right click once on this icon, a menu should pop up, select the shutdown (or equivalent) option from the menu. The icon should then disappear.

DELETING FILES
To delete a file (eg C:\WP.EXE), open My Computer, double click on the C drive icon, left click once on the file to select it (wp.exe in this case) then hit the DEL button on your keyboard or click Delete from the task bar.

NB If you can't see the file you are looking for, it may mean that its hidden. You then need to click on the 'tools' menu in My Computer', select 'folder option' then click on the middle tab (called 'view'). Locate the setting that labeled 'Show hidden files & folders' and enable it.
Click on the 'apply' button then click OK to close the menu.
You should now be able to see hidden files - they may appear slightly greyed out or faded. You can then delete as normal.

I suggest that maybe you don't delete anything until you've consulted the malware forum though. But at least now, you will know how to do this stuff if they ask you to.

Good luck
