So my problem is that every time I search a term on google/yahoo and I click on one of the search results, I'm redirected to a totally different site than the one I clicked on, usually advertising some product related to my search term.

I've done everything suggested in this thread and the problem still persists.

Please help me resolve this problem.

Here is the HJT log and I'll post some other logs along with it which might be helpful. I've posted an HJT log,
SUPERAntiSpyware Scan Log and an Activescan Log. I didn't post an AVG log because the AVG scan I did showed nothing.

Hi Yellowsea

welcome to geekstogo :)

lets do a deeper scan of your machine for me to analyse. also, could you turn wordwrap off on your notepad - it makes it hard to read the logs.

Please download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) and save it to your Desktop.
  • Close all other windows before proceeding.
  • Double-click on dss.exe and follow the prompts.
  • When it has finished, dss will open two Notepads main.txt and extra.txt -- please copy (CTRL+A and then CTRL+C) and paste (CTRL+V) the contents of main.txt and extra.txt in your next reply.

you may need to post the logs over 2 replies to ensure all the information is posted.

Ok, I did the scan and posted both logs and I turned off wordwrap.

before we start i need to gather some more information.

do you recognise either of those names and addresses of the DNS servers:

Freedom Networks LLC, 50 Freemont St., 16 Floor, San Francisco, CA, 94105, US

and

UkrTeleGroup, UkrTeleGroup Ltd., Mechnikova 58/5, 65029 Odessa, Ukraine

the second one definately looks suspicious, but i dont know about the first one. is it your ISP or company? i suspect not, if you dont recognise them then we will delete them in the next post along with other malware i can see.

ok, in this post we will clear the malware i can see and do a couple of further scans to see what else is lurking on your machine

we will be clearing those DNS entries, so you may need to go check "Obtain DNS server address automatically" start >>> control panel >>> network connections >>> right click your active/default connection and select properties >>> select the Networking tab >>> highlight Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) >>> properties >>> and then check obtain an IP address automatically and Obtain DNS server address automatically

====STEP 1====
We will be making some changes to your Registry. So, we will first back it up. Better safe than sorry.

Go to Start > Run
Type:regedit
Click OK.
  • On the leftside, click to highlight My Computer at the top.
  • Go up to "File > Export"
    • Make sure in that window there is a tick next to "All" under Export Branch. <= important!
      Leave the "Save As Type" as "Registration Files".
      Under "Filename" put backup
  • Choose to save it to C:\ or somewhere else safe so that you will remember where you put it (don't put it on the desktop!)
  • Click save and then go to File > Exit.
This is so the registry can be restored to this point if we need it. It may take a minute. Just let it go until it's done.

====STEP 2====
Next, lets remove the unwanted items.
Please copy the contents of the code box below. To do this highlight the contents of the box and right click on it. Save it to your desktop has fixit.reg (filetype = any)

REGEDIT4

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\windows nt\currentversion\winlogon]
"System"=""

NOTICE: This file was written specifically for this user, for use on that particular machine.
Running this on another machine may cause damage to your operating sysytem

Locate fixit.reg on your Desktop and double-click on it.
You will receive a prompt similar to: "Do you wish to merge the information into the registry?".
Answer "Yes" and wait for a message to appear similar to "Merged Successfully".

Please reply back letting me know if it merged correctly.

(In case you are unsure how to create a reg file, take a look here with screenshots.)

====STEP 3====
Please re-open HiJackThis and scan. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below.

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchURL,(Default) = http://home.microsof...search.asp?p=%s

Ok, so I did everything you told me and the registry merge was successful.

those scans were good, kaspersky only picked up a couple of false positives.

i want to do one more scan because i know there is a fix to come in the post following this:

Download WinPFind35U.exe (BETA) to your Desktop and double-click on it to extract the files. It will create a folder named WinPFind35u on your desktop.
  • Close any open browsers.
  • Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of WinpFind35U.

    -----------------------------------------------------------

    • Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before performing a scan. They can interfere with WinpFind35U or remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results".
    • Click on this link to see a list of programs that should be disabled. The list is not all inclusive. If yours is not listed and you don't know how to disable it, please ask.

      -----------------------------------------------------------

  • Open the WinPFind3u folder and double-click on WinPFind3U.exe to start the program.
  • Now click the Run Scan button on the toolbar.
  • The program will be scanning huge amounts of data so depending on your system it could take a long time to complete. Let it run unhindered until it finishes.
  • When the scan is complete Notepad will open with the report file loaded in it.
  • Save that notepad file
Use the Reply button and attach the notepad file here (Do not copy and paste in a reply, rather attach it to it).

Here you go. I attached the file. I'm not sure if I did this right because it didn't take very long like you stated it might take.

in this post we will do that final fix and i suspect we will be pretty much done.

Start WinPFind3U. Copy/Paste the information in the quote box below into the pane where it says "Paste fix here" and then click the Run Fix button.

[Unregister Dlls]
[Registry - Non-Microsoft Only]
< SecurityProviders [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE] > -> HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\SecurityProviders\\SecurityProviders
*SecurityProviders* -> HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\SecurityProviders\\SecurityProviders
YN -> xlibgfl254.dll -> xlibgfl254.dll
< SecurityProviders [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE] > -> HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\SecurityProviders\\SecurityProviders
[Empty Temp Folders]

The fix should only take a very short time. When the fix is completed a message box will popup telling you that it is finished. CLick the Ok button and Notepad will open with a log of actions taken during the fix. Post that information back here along with a new WinPFind3u scan and a Hijackthis log, separately (the Hijackthis can be pasted on the reply).

I will review the information when it comes back in. if you are asked to reboot then reboot.

Also let me know of any problems you encountered performing the steps above or any continuing problems you are still having with the computer.

in your next reply could i see:
1. the log of actions taken in the above fix
2. a new WinPFind3u scan (attached as a file)
3. a new hijackthis log
4. some idea of how your machine is running now

Hi Yellowsea

congratulations, your logs are now clean :)

we will now reset your restore points (there will be infections lurking in there) and i will leave you with some ideas on how to improve the protection of machine from future infection

you can also delete the winpfind3u program, text files and the script file we wrote earlier.

====STEP 1====
resetting the restore points:

To reset your restore points, please note that you will need to log into your computer with an account which has full administrator access. You will know if the account has administrator access because you will be able to see the System Restore tab. If the tab is missing, you are logged in under a limited account.

Instructions with screenshots to help is http://www.f-secure..../sfc_dis1.shtml

(Windows XP)
1. Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

2. Reboot.

3. Turn ON System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

====AND FINALLY====
The following is a list of tools and utilities that I like to suggest to people. This list is full of great tools and utilities to help you understand how you got infected and how to keep from getting infected again.
  • Spybot Search & Destroy - Uber powerful tool which can search and annhilate nasties that make it onto your system. Now with an Immunize section that will help prevent future infections.
  • AdAware - Another very powerful tool which searches and kills nasties that infect your system. AdAware and Spybot Search & Destroy compliment each other very well.
  • SpywareBlaster - Great prevention tool to keep nasties from installing on your system.
  • SpywareGuard - Works as a Spyware "Shield" to protect your computer from getting malware in the first place.
  • IE-SpyAd - puts over 5000 sites in your restricted zone so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all.
  • ATF Cleaner - Cleans temporary files from IE and Windows, empties the recycle bin and more. Great tool to help speed up your computer and knock out those nasties that like to reside in the temp folders.
  • Windows Updates - It is very important to make sure that both Internet Explorer and Windows are kept current with the latest critical security patches from Microsoft. To do this just start Internet Explorer and select Tools > Windows Update, and follow the online instructions from there.
  • Google Toolbar - Free google toolbar that allows you to use the powerful Google search engine from the bar, but also blocks pop up windows.
  • Trillian or Miranda-IM - These are Malware free Instant Messenger programs which allow you to connect to multiple IM services in one program! (AOL, Yahoo, ICQ, IRC, MSN)
To find out more information about how you got infected in the first place and some great guidelines to follow to prevent future infections you can read this article by Tony Klein
