Hi alexhutch101, welcome to G2G.

Try re-registering the Windows Update dlls:

1. Click on Start and Run
2. Type regsvr32 Msxml3.dll and press Enter.
3. Should get the message DllRegisterServer in Msxml3.dll succeeded, Click OK.
4. Repeat for each of the following:

REGSVR32 WUAPI.DLL
REGSVR32 WUAUENG1.DLL
REGSVR32 ATL.DLL
REGSVR32 WUPS2.DLL
REGSVR32 WUCLTUI.DLL
REGSVR32 WUPS.DLL
REGSVR32 WUWEB.DLL
REGSVR32 WUAUENG.DLL

5. Reboot

have run the items you asked, restarted no joy, I just get internet explorer up, it asked to install an activex control, continues then does nothing, I'll attach a print screen of what it shows me, will try manual install of updates shortly

you can get the numbers of the updates you need and then download them from here at the softwarepatch...you can even download them using firefox and install them...no need to even use IE at all

See this web site for some excellent tips and troubleshooting ideas.
Ignore the part about after a Repair Install, the rest still applies:
