First, I would like to say hello to everyone. This is my first time to this site and the first time I'm posting. I do hope someone knows how to fix this problem, as I have tried things for hours. Anyways, my problem is:

It started when I downloaded a new version of Norton Antivirus. After I downloaded it, Norton wouldn't install. I restarted my computer, thinking maybe that would help. When it came back on, my desktop was red and the center had the following: "DANGER: SPYWARE" with 2 ads to software that could fix my problem (They both cost $60, so I opted against that). All my icons were also removed, except for my Trash Can, My Computer, My Documents, and the Norton things I downloaded to my desktop. I also couldn't right click or change my desktop. I have no sound and can't install anything onto my PC. Norton still wouldn't install and crashed repeatedly. My outdated version of Norton was worthless and wouldn't detect any viruses (haven't used the PC in a while). I scanned my PC with an online trial of Norton, and it came back showing I had several trojans. Spybot S&D detected only a few things, which I removed. I'm at a dead end, though, and a bit frustrated.

Any help you could give me would be greatly appreciated.

Get a copy of winsockxpfix.exe before you do anything. This is just a safety
item in case you can't get on the internet afterwards. You just run it and
things should work OK after it reboots your system.

We also need to uninstall Spybot S&D or at least keep it from running until we
are done. You can either use Start Control Panel Add/Remove Software to remove
it completely which will probably mean you will need to redownload it to
reinstall it or easier would be to run HijackThis and check/Fix Checked the two

Start then right click on My Computer and press Manage. In the new window
Service and Applications then Services. In the right pane scroll down and find
the NET Framework Service. Double click on it and and then set the Start Type
to Disabled. Then OK. Repeat for:
Manageer Network Connections
Working Network Connections

Now shutdown and reboot into Safe Mode by tapping the F8 key when you see the PC
maker's logo.
Keep tapping until it tells you it is going to Safe Mode or you see the Safe
Mode menu. Select the top option.

Run HijackThis and just do a Scan only. Check then Fix

Wait 60 seconds and repeat the scan. Did any of the above come back? IF so
leave HijackThis up and right click on the clock and select Task Manager. Then
Processes. Find Explorer.exe, right click on it and select End Process. The
desktop will disappear but HijackThis should still be there. IF you don't see
it switch to Applications in Task Manager and highlight it there then press
Switch To or just double click on it. Check and Fix Checked the above again.
Restart Explorer by Task Manager, File, New Task(Run), explorer.exe, OK.



Now run ccleaner.exe. On the first page, uncheck everything but the two lines
that have the word Temporary in them then Run Cleaner.

Start, Run, cmd, OK. This should bring up a black DOS type window. Type:

Get a copy of winsockxpfix.exe before you do anything. This is just a safety
item in case you can't get on the internet afterwards. You just run it and
things should work OK after it reboots your system.

We also need to uninstall Spybot S&D or at least keep it from running until we
are done. You can either use Start Control Panel Add/Remove Software to remove
it completely which will probably mean you will need to redownload it to
reinstall it or easier would be to run HijackThis and check/Fix Checked the two

Start then right click on My Computer and press Manage. In the new window
Service and Applications then Services. In the right pane scroll down and find
the NET Framework Service. Double click on it and and then set the Start Type
to Disabled. Then OK. Repeat for:
Manageer Network Connections
Working Network Connections

Now shutdown and reboot into Safe Mode by tapping the F8 key when you see the PC
maker's logo.
Keep tapping until it tells you it is going to Safe Mode or you see the Safe
Mode menu. Select the top option.

Run HijackThis and just do a Scan only. Check then Fix

Wait 60 seconds and repeat the scan. Did any of the above come back? IF so
leave HijackThis up and right click on the clock and select Task Manager. Then
Processes. Find Explorer.exe, right click on it and select End Process. The
desktop will disappear but HijackThis should still be there. IF you don't see
it switch to Applications in Task Manager and highlight it there then press
Switch To or just double click on it. Check and Fix Checked the above again.
Restart Explorer by Task Manager, File, New Task(Run), explorer.exe, OK.



Now run ccleaner.exe. On the first page, uncheck everything but the two lines
that have the word Temporary in them then Run Cleaner.

Start, Run, cmd, OK. This should bring up a black DOS type window. Type:

I followed the instructions, and everything seems to be working except one thing. I can now install things, including Norton. Only problem left is that I still have the "Danger: Spyware" desktop, and I cant right click. Here is an updated log, and I'm happy to say its shorter
