Machine Freezes [RESOLVED]

Hi


I recently managed to clean my pc from the NetSky infection but now it is showing signs of illness again.
I can still log onto my account but in the bottom right corner of my screen, the system tray remains empty with no applications loaded..(not even a volume icon)..this doesn't change even after 1/2 an hour..when i click on the screen the machine freezes..i cannot even access Task Manager to view the processes running. The machine was able to boot properly in safe mode. It was here that I used msconfig to disable some of the processes on startup....but i cannot pinpoint which process is eating up my system's resources on startup and causing the pc to hang..Any help would be appreciated...Also some tips if I'am on the right track or not...Here is a HJT log for the scan that I ran while I was able to log into safe mode:

Hi,

I notice from the log that there are running more than one different Anti-Virus programs present. Eset 'NOD32' and Symantec Norton.
Never install more than one Antivirus and Firewall! Rather than giving you extra protection, it will decrease the reliability of it seriously!
The reason for this is that if both products have their automatic (Real-Time) protection switched on, your system may lock up due to both software products attempting to access the same file at the same time.
Also because more than one Antivirus and Firewall installed are not compatible with eachother, it can cause system performance problems and a serious system slowdown.

So start with uninstalling Eset (Nod32) or Symantec first. I'm 80% sure that this is the main cause of your problem.

hi agn,

Thanx for that. I managed to remove ESET and now everything seems to be ok...I would like to use an anti-spyware program just as a back up to symantec but i dont want this problem to happen again..Any suggestions on programs to use that wont conflict with symantec but will keep my machine free of spyware..???

Hi,

Well, NOD32 (Eset) is an Antivirus, not an Antispyware program. And as I said, more than 1 Antivirus installed may cause a lot of problems (as you have noticed)
Antispyware scanners are compatible with most Antivirus. You already have AVG Antispyware installed. Look in my signature below under Antispyware Scanners for others I recommend. Also, do not exaggerate here, because most Antispywarescanners also run as a real scanner, and more than one active and running causes an extra system slowdown.

The best way to prevent malware is reading this Prevention page with lots of info and tips how to prevent this in the future.
And if you want to improve speed/system performance after malware removal, take a look here.
Extra note: Make sure your programs are up to date - because older versions may contain Security Leaks. To find out what programs need to be updated, please run the Secunia Software Inspector Scan.
