I have searched all through the posted threads and cannot find anything related to my problem. If this is the wrong place to post this, please tell me and I will gladly post it in the proper area.

Up until last night, this computer ran fine & accessed the internet through MSN (Verizon DSL). This morning, when clicking on the MSN icon, a message pops up

"A newer version of Internet Explorer is required to run MSN than is installed on your computer"

Then goes on to say I should go to the Microsoft web site and download the newer version. Which I did. I uninstalled IE first, then reinstalled IE from the MS web site. I am still getting the same message upon clicking on the MSN icon.

I am able to access the internet through IE directly but I get this error

"Missing Microsoft Layer for Unicode (unicows.dll)" and then I click OK.

The message will pop up 3 - 4 times, I keep clicking OK, then my home page on IE will load and run normally.

I called Verizon DSL support, they put me on hold to MSN tech support. MSN rep said this is a major problem and not something they can fix over the phone. He suggested I uninstall then reinstall IE. Other than that, he says to get a computer tech to fix the computer. :tazz:

Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!

I uninstalled IE first, then reinstalled IE from the MS web site.

That's pretty impressive, I know of nobody else who has succeeded in uninstalling Internet Explorer :tazz: (it's an integrated component of Windows, you can't get rid of it...)

MSN rep said this is a major problem and not something they can fix over the phone. He suggested I uninstall then reinstall IE. Other than that, he says to get a computer tech to fix the computer.

That's BS - they shouldn't make you do that, assuming that he was suggesting you pay for the tech yourself. Most of us charge more than $50 an hour, so I think it's ridiculous that they get you to pay it yourself.

I would first demand a technician come over from MSN, and then disconnect from that ISP and find yourself a new one... but that's just me ;)

Tell us how downloading unicows.exe from stallion's link goes.

Thank you for your reply.

However, I do not have a Crystal Decisons folder to download the unicows.exe into. I had read a thread on this subject where someone also said to download into Crystal Decisions. I checked under C:\Program Files\Common Files\ the folder is not there. Now what?

Regarding the uninstall of IE, I did not know that I would be unable to completely uninstall IE. At the suggestion of the MSN tech, I went to Microsoft.com support section and followed their instructions to uninstall IE and install an updated version (which I already had I believe) I guess I wasted my time there.

This is extremely frustrating. :tazz:

I suppose the file might be hidden... make sure you go to Tools > Options > View (tab) > Show hidden files and folders first...?

yea!you can try this as splintax says!or else try to install unicows under c:\progfiles\unicows and when it is installed try to move the unicows.dll into msn folder.
I am trying to install unicows in my pc and getting funny error messages.it requires 200000000000 blah blah KB of disk space to be installed in my ME machine!
Stuck with it now!
try your luck and post it here

After trying each of the suggestions, I still have this same unicows.dll (Missing Microsoft Layer for Unicodes) error message when using IE. When clicking on the MSN icon that I was using to access the internet & email, I am prompted to upgrade my IE. My daughter uses this computer for school, so any help is greatly appreciated!

I wanted to post my Hijack This log in my original thread. If it's not the proper place, please let me know. I am so frustrated! Thanks for your help.
