Many thanks for all your time, patience, and assistance Rorschach. I followed the instructions below but have a couple of final questions about protection, if you don't mind.

1. One of my FireFox add-ons is "No Script" - but how does one determine which sites are okay to "allow"? Is there any quick and easy way to find out (place to go, list to consult, etc) if a website that is blocked (or active X) is spyware or malware of some sort?

2. Can viruses hide in power-point presentations? Right before my computer suddenly slowed right down and started acting up, I downloaded a powerpoint presentation from the internet (from a university website I thought would be trustable). Just wondering.

Thanks!

Hello

but how does one determine which sites are okay to "allow"?

I would recommend that you download McAfee Site Advisor, it tells you which sites are safe and bad.

Can viruses hide in power-point presentations?

As far as I know, they can't. I imagine you got the malware from somewhere else
