Dear Geeks to Go,

Thank you for hosting this community to help users in need, like me. I have followed the instructions on the "You Must Read This First..." page, and in the process have detected and deleted a Trojan, a Logger and other unwanted software. So Thank You!

The primary infection on my computer started on Jan 28; it was Hacktool.Rootkit. Shortly thereafter, my Norton Anti-Virus detected W32.Gammima.AG and Downloader. So far Norton Anti-virus has not detected any malicious software since Saturday, Feb 16; and yet since then, my computer's functionality has degraded: the "C" and "D" drives became unopenable today, hidden files suddenly couldn't be revealed (this I fixed through Regedit); and for the past week or more my Norton Anti-virus will invariably turn-off, and I am unable to turn it back on except through a system restart (sometimes it works on start-up, sometimes it doesn't, but all the System Restore points but the one I made earlier today have been deleted).

It is possible that the viruses are gone, but that their damage remains. But, again, some of these problems are more recent than my last successful scans.

Please note: for some reason the Panda Scan did not work properly. After the scan, it reloaded the scan page, and I wasn't able to view the results. Also (and I don't know how this happened), the AVG Anti-Spyware did not generate a report, even though the "Automatically generate report after every scan" had been checked; it had detected and deleted 75 cookies and a medium-level "Logger." The SUPERAntiSpyware did not detect anything on my computer.

I would be grateful if someone could review the below HijackThis log, and let me know if there are signs that anything is lingering since I was able to successfully remove various viruses over the weekend.

Thanks so much.

Hi there lets do a bit of house keeping first :)

You are currently using HijackThis from a temporary directory, this can cause problems.
HijackThis creates backups, these are needed in case of any recovery issues.
Please create a directory on your C:\ drive called C:\HJT, download and unzip HijackThis into that directory. Run the program from that directory from now on.

STEPS For Creating Folder
1. Please go to My Computer, open your C:\ drive, Select: New >> Folder and name the folder HJT.

2. Download HijackThis to the new folder:

3. Double Click on 'HijackThis.zip' to extract and install HijackThis.exe to the new folder.
So to start once you have done that

Please re-open HiJackThis and scan. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below.

O23 - Service: B - Unknown owner - C:\DOCUME~1\Rob\LOCALS~1\Temp\B.exe (file missing)
O23 - Service: DVTTX - Unknown owner - C:\DOCUME~1\Rob\LOCALS~1\Temp\DVTTX.exe (file missing)
O23 - Service: IOHHTEABQN - Unknown owner - C:\DOCUME~1\Rob\LOCALS~1\Temp\IOHHTEABQN.exe (file missing)
O23 - Service: REIR - Unknown owner - C:\DOCUME~1\Rob\LOCALS~1\Temp\REIR.exe (file missing)
O23 - Service: UAMB - Sysinternals - www.sysinternals.com - C:\DOCUME~1\Rob\LOCALS~1\Temp\UAMB.exe

Now close all windows other than HiJackThis, then click Fix Checked. Close HiJackThis.

THEN

@echo off
sc stop B
sc stop DVTTX
sc stop IOHHTEABQN
sc stop REIR
sc stop UAMB
sc delete B
sc delete DVTTX
sc delete IOHHTEABQN
sc delete REIR
sc delete UAMB
exit

Next you will need to create the batch fix to do that copy and paste ALL of the above in the quote box to a notepad file.
Then in the text file go to FILE > SAVE AS and in the dropdown box select SAVE AS TYPE to ALL FILES
Then in the FILE NAME box type fix.bat

This will create a batch file Posted Image

Then run fix.bat by double clicking you may see a black box appear this is normal

FINALLY FOR NOW

Please download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) and save it to your Desktop.
  • Close all other windows before proceeding.
  • Double-click on dss.exe and follow the prompts.
  • When it has finished, dss will open two Notepads main.txt and extra.txt -- please copy (CTRL+A and then CTRL+C) and paste (CTRL+V) the contents of main.txt and extra.txt in your next reply.

Hi there you have several infections which have migrated to or from your USB drives. We will need to take a several prong approach to this to ensure you are clean

I would recommend copying this post to a text file for reference as it will be quite long

Download and run ERUNT http://www.larsheder...nline.de/erunt/

Start ERUNT, confirm the Welcome message.

Type in the name of a restore folder where the backed up registry
files should be saved, or click "..." to browse your computer's drives
and select a folder. You can also simply leave the default, which is a
folder named ERDNT inside your Windows folder, the advantage being
that you have access to this folder from the Windows Recovery Console
in case Windows does not boot anymore.

Next, select the backup options:

- System registry:

- Current user registy: .

- Other open user registries:

Click "OK" and wait until the backup process is complete. (Note that
depending on your system configuration this may take some time, and
that the first bar is NOT a progress bar, just an indicator that the
program is still running.) The ERDNT program for later restoration of
the registry is automatically copied to the restore folder.

WARNING these fixes are designed for this user only and may cause damage if run on an uninfected machine

REGISTRY FIX

REGEDIT4

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\MountPoints2\C]
"BaseClass"="Drive"

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\MountPoints2\D]

[-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\explorer\mountpoints2\{c523f8b6-5877-11dc-944e-0015c5238712}]

Next you will need to create the repair registry fix to do that copy and paste ALL of the above in the quote box to a notepad file. Ensure there is no space above the REGEDIT4.
Then in notepad go to FILE > SAVE AS and in the dropdown box select SAVE AS TYPE to ALL FILES
Then in the FILE NAME box type fix.reg
This will create a fix.reg file on your desktop Posted Image

To use this file you will need to right click the icon and select merge, accept the warning if it appears and you are done.

THEN

  • 1 - Flash Drive Disinfector
Download Flash_Disinfector.exe by sUBs from >here< and save it to your desktop.
  • Double-click Flash_Disinfector.exe to run it and follow any prompts that may appear.
  • The utility may ask you to insert your flash drive and/or other removable drives including your mobile phone. Please do so and allow the utility to clean up those drives as well.
  • Wait until it has finished scanning and then exit the program.
  • Reboot your computer when done.
Note: Flash_Disinfector will create a hidden folder named autorun.inf in each partition and every USB drive plugged in when you ran it. Don't delete this folder...it will help protect your drives from future infection.

FINALLY FOR NOW

Please download ComboFix from Here or Here to your Desktop.

**Note: In the event you already have Combofix, this is a new version that I need you to download. It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop**
  • Please, never rename Combofix unless instructed.
  • Close any open browsers.
  • Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

    -----------------------------------------------------------

    • Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before performing a scan. They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results".
    • Click on this link to see a list of programs that should be disabled. The list is not all inclusive. If yours is not listed and you don't know how to disable it, please ask.

      -----------------------------------------------------------

    • Close any open browsers.
    • WARNING: Combofix will disconnect your machine from the Internet as soon as it starts
    • Please do not attempt to re-connect your machine back to the Internet until Combofix has completely finished.
    • If there is no internet connection after running Combofix, then restart your computer to restore back your connection.

    -----------------------------------------------------------

  • Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • When finished, it will produce a report for you.
  • Please post the "C:\ComboFix.txt" along with a new HijackThis log for further review.
**Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall**

Dear Essexboy,

You are a Saint! ComboFix removed two EXE files. I can't help but think that we are getting closer to getting my computer cleaned.

The ComboFix and HJT logs are below. Thank you again for all of your help analyzing this data and repairing my computer. I am living and working in semi-rural Tanzania, and don't locally have access to resources needed to restore my computer. I would be lost without you.

The logs are as follows:

OK looking better a few more files to go and a revisit on two registry entries, plus one more scan. Can you open C and D drives now (after this fix)

1. Please open Notepad
  • Click Start , then Run
  • Type notepad .exe in the Run Box.

2. Now copy/paste the entire content of the codebox below into the Notepad window:

File::
C:\autorun.PNF
C:\WINDOWS\system32\0FF25ED8E0.sys
C:\WINDOWS\system32\E0D85EF20F.sys

Registry::
[-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\explorer\mountpoints2\C]
[-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\explorer\mountpoints2\D]
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\MountPoints2\C]
"BaseClass"="Drive"
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\MountPoints2\D]

Hello Essexboy,

My computer seems to be working fairly well now. I have been able to open the C and D folders ever since making a slight amendment to the Registry on Monday. Other processes seem to be working normally - that is to say that I am still having trouble with Internet Explorer, but I have often struggled with that, and it is possible that it is just a Host file issue.

Thank you again for helping me to get to this point!

Below are the ComboFix, HJT and MBAM logs. Did ComboFix also fix the registry? I didn't see anything in the report related to the "mointpoints2" lines of code.

Thank you again for all of your help! This is so gratifying - I hope it is gratifying for you, too! I promise to burn CDs at my next workshop, instead of trading memory sticks. I think computer viruses are very common here.

Warm wishes,
Rob

Looks real good now :) at the end of this post I will give the after cleaning wash and brush up tips :)

Now the best part of the day ----- Your log now appears clean :)

You may now delete all the tools I had you download

Now to get you off to a good start we will re-set your restore points so that all the bad stuff is gone for good. Then if you need to restore at some stage you will be clean. There are several ways to reset your your restore point but this is my method:

1. Select Start > All Programs > Accessories > System tools > System Restore.
2. On the dialogue box that appears select Create a Restore Point
3. Click NEXT
4. Enter a name e.g. Clean
5. Click CREATE

You now have a clean restore point, to get rid of the bad ones:

1. Select Start > All Programs > Accessories > System tools > Disk Cleanup.
2. In the Drop down box that appears select your main drive e.g. C
3. Click OK
4. The System will do some calculation and the display a dialogue box with TABS
5. Select the More Options Tab.
6. At the bottom will be a system restore box with a CLEANUP button click this
7. Accept the Warning and select OK again, the program will close and you are done

Now that you are clean, to help protect your computer in the future I recommend that you get the following free program:
  • SpywareBlaster to help prevent spyware from installing in the first place.
It is critical to have both a firewall and anti virus to protect your system and to keep them updated.

To keep your operating system up to date visit

To learn more about how to protect yourself while on the internet read this article by Tony Klien: So how did I get infected in the first place?

Keep safe :)

WASH AND BRUSH UP

Prefetch is clickable for more information

Click start then run, type prefetch then press enter, click edit then select all, (all files will highlight), right click any file, click delete, confirm

Click start then all programmes, accessories, system tools to run disc clean up

Reboot

Download, install and run
Tuneup Utilities 2008

Select Free up disk space

Select Unneccesary files and backups then clean

Select Maintain Windows

Run Drive Defrag

Run Tune Up registry clean up

Then run Reg Defrag, the screen will lose colour during the process which can take a few minutes and then needs a reboot

Those will have cleared the drive of obsolete software errors

These are suggestions for making the most of the free trial

Select Increase performance

Run the internet Optimiser to accelerate downloads, select the speed just above your actual connection speed, this requires a reboot.

After the reboot, click Increase performance then system optimizer to run system advisor

Dear Essexboy,

The best part of your day!? This is the best part of my WEEK! Thank you so much for guiding me step-by-step throughout this process. I don't know what I would have done without you.

I do have one last question: it is difficult (and expensive) to get external hard drives in the part of East Africa where I am living. Is it possible for me to safely reboot my computer in safe mode, reformat my external hard drive (which was infected also) and then use it as a back-up in normal mode? Or would I transfer the infection back to my computer in the process - either in safe mode or in normal mode? If I need to ditch the hard drive and get another, I can. I just wanted to get your feedback first.

I have installed SpywareBlaster and ran the tasks you suggested using TuneUp. My computer is already running more smoothly. It's actually BETTER than it was before the infection. How on earth did you do that!?

Thanks again for all of your help, Essexboy. I hope you know how much you have helped me.

;-) Rob

You should be able to reformat your External drive but do not open it just right click the drive and select format - and use the full option :)
