Hi,

My Onecare has found a virus/malware called RemoteAccess:Win32/HostControl but it can not remove or even quarintine it. How do I see the properties and location of the infectedted file ?

I have followed the instruction that Onecare has given me view the location of the virus/malware and manually delete it but when I click on the virus/malware in the scan report window it just sends me to the Onecare website with a list of what is known about this particular virus/malware and to be honest its not helpful at all as all that is known about it is the date it was first found 09/06/2007...

Any help would be great

P.S. spybot s&d does not find anything at all...

Hello

Please download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) and save it to your Desktop.
  • Close all other windows before proceeding.
  • Double-click on dss.exe and follow the prompts.
  • If your anti-virus or firewall complains, please allow this script to run as it is not malicious.
  • When it has finished, dss will open two Notepads main.txt and extra.txt -- please copy (CTRL+A and then CTRL+C) and paste (CTRL+V) the contents of main.txt and extra.txt in your next reply.

Please do an online scan with Kaspersky WebScanner

Click on Kaspersky Online Scanner and click Accept

You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
  • The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
  • Now click on Scan Settings
  • In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
    Extended (if available otherwise Standard)
    • Scan Options:
    Scan Archives
    Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK
  • Now under select a target to scan:Select My Computer
  • This will program will start and scan your system.
  • The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
  • Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
    • Now click on the Save as Text button:
  • Save the file to your desktop.
  • Copy and paste that information in your next post.

Hello

1. Please re-open HiJackThis and choose do a system scan only. Check the boxes next to ONLY the entries listed below(if present):

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {7E853D72-626A-48EC-A868-BA8D5E23E045} - (no file)

2. Now close all windows other than HiJackThis, including browsers, so that nothing other than HijackThis is open, then click Fix Checked. A box will pop up asking you if you wish to fix the selected items. Please choose YES. Once it has fixed them, please exit/close HijackThis.

Delete this file in bold

K:\apps\Nero 8 Ultra Edition 8.2.8.0+Keymaker\Nero-8.2.8.0_eng_trial.exe/Toolbar.exe

Then reboot and tell me how your PC is running and if you have any visible problem

Ok I ran HijackThis and followed your steps, after clicking "FIX" HijackThis went to a blank window so I closed it and went back in and "O2 - BHO: (no name) - {7E853D72-626A-48EC-A868-BA8D5E23E045} - (no file)" seems to be no longer on the list and I also deleted the entire Nero file including "K:\apps\Nero 8 Ultra Edition 8.2.8.0+Keymaker\Nero-8.2.8.0_eng_trial.exe/Toolbar.exe" from my K drive.

It seems to have worked, I only done a quick scan and it came back all clear but it was late lastnight so I have left my computer on and I am doing a full system scan while im at work and I will check it tonight and report back but looks goo so far, Thank you so much for the help I have really appreciated your time thank you.

From the 3 reports I have posted have you spotted any other malicious software or file or does all look fine because I was wondering out of curiosity why Kasperskys report says almost everything was locked and skipped ??? Is that normal ? and on other thing what does the following mean from the report, is this normal...

Your logs are clean ! Few things to do

You can delete the tools that we used

You now need to update your Java and remove your older versions.

Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components.

* Click Start > Control Panel.
* Click Add/Remove Programs.
* Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE) in the name.
* Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.

Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE), and install it to your computer from
here

Now we need to create a new System Restore point.

Click Start Menu > Run > type (or copy and paste)

%SystemRoot%\System32\restore\rstrui.exe

Press OK. Choose Create a Restore Point then click Next. Name it and click Create, when the confirmation screen shows the restore point has been created click Close.

Next goto Start Menu > Run > type

cleanmgr

Click OK, Disk Cleanup will open and start calculating the amount of space that can be freed, Once thats finished it will open the Disk Cleanup options screen, click the More Options tab then click Clean up on the system restore area and choose Yes at the confirmation window which will remove all the restore points except the one we just created.

To close Disk Cleanup and remove the Temporary Internet Files detected in the initial scan click OK then choose Yes on the confirmation window.

Below I have included a number of recommendations for how to protect your computer against malware infections.

* Keep Windows updated by regularly checking their website at :
http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/
This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer.

* To reduce re-infection for malware in the future, I strongly recommend installing these free programs:
SpywareBlaster protects against bad ActiveX
IE-SPYAD puts over 5000 sites in your restricted zone so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all
Have a look at this tutorial for IE-Spyad here

* SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.

Make Internet Explorer more secure
  • Click Start > Run
  • Type Inetcpl.cpl & click OK
  • Click on the Security tab
  • Click Reset all zones to default level
  • Make sure the Internet Zone is selected & Click Custom level
  • In the ActiveX section, set the first two options ("Download signed and unsigned ActiveX controls) to "Prompt", and ("Initialize and Script ActiveX controls not marked as safe") to "Disable".
  • Next Click OK, then Apply button and then OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

* MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well known ad sites and other bad sites. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer, meaning it will be difficult to infect yourself in the future.

* Please consider using an alternate browser. Mozilla's Firefox browser is fantastic; it is much more
secure than Internet Explorer, immune to almost all known browser hijackers, and also has the best built-in pop up
blocker (as an added benefit!) that I have ever seen. If you are interested, Firefox may be downloaded from
Here

* Take a good look at the following suggestions for malware prevention by reading Tony Klein’s article 'How Did I Get Infected In The First Place'
Here

Thank you for your patience, and performing all of the procedures requested.

Ok Rorschach112 I have done all of the above except Mozilla's Firefox browser as I think my internet explorer is pretty secure now and the malware/virus is now wiped of my system thanks to your advice :) Thank you very much !

The only thing I could not do is make a new restore point, when I type "%SystemRoot%\System32\restore\rstrui.exe" it says "windows can not find %SystemRoot%\System32\restore\rstrui.exe blah blah blah" ??? Im using Vista if it makes any difference but could you tell me how as I really need one because I have just done all of the above and my computer seems to be in a good spot now...

Ok I will give it a try shouldn't be too hard. Just one Question already was it wise to install SpywareBlaster, SpywareGuard and IE-SPYAD becuase thats what I have done and I also have Onecare. These are all anti-spyware and I heard only 1 per computer, should I uninstall them ? Didn't think about it until after I downloaded them all because I got carried away with all the anti-spy downloads after getting this malware/virus thing.

I wouldn't have recommended them if they were going to conflict

It is perfectly safe to have them and will cause no problems. Just make sure you don't have more than one anti-virus or firewall

Cool, I wasn't sure if it was a step by step or just a recomendation meaning those were programmes you recomended and should only choose one but no worries all good.
just successfully created a restore point :) thanks for the link!

Just one question then I will out of your way until next time. I just done a full system scan and Onecare found a potential harmful file I dont think its much to worry about as Onecare said it successfully stopped it and quarantined it but can you take a look at this screen shot anyway as it mentions a "hostfile" and I swap my host file as you recommended before (MVPS Hosts file). I followed the sites instructions how to do it to the best of my ability but some parts I didn't fuly understand, could I have done something wrong ?
