Hello

I am having serious issues with my pc.. it has slowed down to almost a stop... desktop cannot recover.. very unstable. I have followed your instructions on the steps to perform on my PC before starting to request help, but i cannot get beyond the pandaactive scan process. It just will not initiate and start a scan. I used the AVG software and it found 1 low threat adware thing and fixed itself. I just cannot go any further in your 'steps to follow' before posting a hijack this log, so I went ahead and ran the Hijack scan and have posted it's findings below. It's really all i have to send you at this point.

I hope this was an alright thing to do. I just desperately need some help.

Thank you so much

Sincerely - Roger Wood

Hi there I can see nothing apparent. So first I will give you a spring clean and then run an analysis programme :)

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
This program is for XP and Windows 2000 onlyDouble-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
If you use Firefox browserClick Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
If you use Opera browserClick Opera at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
For Technical Support, double-click the e-mail address located at the bottom of each menu.

THEN

Prefetch is clickable for more information

Click start then run, type prefetch then press enter, click edit then select all, (all files will highlight), right click any file, click delete, confirm

Click start then all programmes, accessories, system tools to run disc clean up

Reboot

Download, install and run
Tuneup Utilities 2008

Select Free up disk space

Select Unneccesary files and backups then clean

Select Maintain Windows

Run Drive Defrag

Run Tune Up registry clean up

Then run Reg Defrag, the screen will lose colour during the process which can take a few minutes and then needs a reboot

Those will have cleared the drive of obsolete software errors

These are suggestions for making the most of the free trial

Select Increase performance

Run the internet Optimiser to accelerate downloads, select the speed just above your actual connection speed, this requires a reboot.

After the reboot, click Increase performance then system optimizer to run system advisor

FINALLY FOR NOW

Please download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) and save it to your Desktop.
  • Close all other windows before proceeding.
  • Double-click on dss.exe and follow the prompts.
  • When it has finished, dss will open two Notepads main.txt and extra.txt -- please copy (CTRL+A and then CTRL+C) and paste (CTRL+V) the contents of main.txt and extra.txt in your next reply.

Hi there your problem does not appear to be malware related. It looks to be a combination of the following

Total Physical Memory: 384 MiB (512 MiB recommended).
AV: Spyware Doctor with AntiVirus v (PC Tools)
AV: Norton Internet Security v2005 (Symantec Corporation)

Anti-Virus programs take up an enormous amount of your computer's resources when they are actively scanning your computer. Having two anti-virus programs running at the same time can cause your computer to run very slow, become unstable and even, in rare cases, crash.

If you choose to install more than one Anti-Virus program on your computer, then only one of them should be active in memory at a time.

There are basically two types of these programs:
On-Access and On-Demand

On-Access Scanners
As the name implies, are scanners that run in the background all the time the PC is turned on and running. The main function of an On-Access scanner is to monitor activity on your machine.

On-Demand Scanners
As the name implies, are scanners that only run when you ask them to.
Such as:
Online Scans and scanners that run on your machine but are not actively scanning your machine

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malicious sites can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 4 and save it to your desktop.
  • Scroll down to where it says "JJava Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 4...allows end-users to run Java applications".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Read the License Agreement and then check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement". The page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation and save the file to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove Programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check (highlight) any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u4-windows-i586-p.exe to install the newest version.

What I would suggest is

1. Uninstall Spyware Doctor Antivirus element
2. Go to CRUCIAL and run their system checker to determine what memory your system takes and how much (memory is cheap at the moment)
3. Reduce the amount of programmes starting with your system (I can help there if you wish )

If you could let me have your thoughts on this

Ok.. i did what u said and it has improved the performance almost 100%. I removed all spyware programs except Norton, so I am only using Norton security now... updated the Java and going to add the new memory this week. I greatly appreciate this!

Also I would love to hear from you what the best way is to reduce the amount of programs starting with the PC.

Sincerely - Roger

Certainly if you could post a new hijackthis log I will suggest which items can be removed from the start up :)
