Hello. I am a first time caller. I have provided my "diary" here -- I hope it is not too detailed and that it helps troubleshoot my problem. Thank you for your assistance.

My set-up:

  • Compaq Presario running Windows XP with SP2, set-up with 2 user accounts – one for me, one for my husband – both have admin role
  • I run IE 6
  • I run AVG Free Edition ver. 7.5.516 with virus base 269.20.9/1294
  • I run WinPatrol V 9.5.0.1

My symptoms:
My husband logged in last night and later told me that all of his files were gone (he is not technical)
I logged into his account this morning and observed:
  • A long time to load his Windows settings – usually takes less than 5 secs, today took a minute with a lot of hard disk activity
  • His wallpaper and desktop icons were gone, replaced with the out-of-the-box Compaq wallpaper and desktop
  • What looked like the Windows Security Centre screen loaded, stating he had Firewall and Auto Updates turned on but did not have any Virus Protection. It provided two links to download &.install virus protection – I did not click either, nor record the contents of this screen.
I then unplugged the Ethernet cable to isolate the PC from the network and Internet
I explored his My Documents and it was empty – it normally contains hundreds of files
I logged out of my husband’s account
I then logged into my account. My settings and desktop loaded normally, no delays. The only symptom under my account is that WinPatrol (Scotty) throws up a dialogue every 2 minutes warning that NetProject\sbmdl.dll is being installed
Screen Shot

Of course, I select No each time.
Also when logged in as me, AVG threw up a warning that a Trojan horse had been found – I did not record the name. I chose to send it to the Virus Vault.

What I’ve done so far:
While logged in as me, I ran Explorer and was able to find all of my husband’s files under Document & Settings. I copied them to a new subfolder, then deleted the originals. I then removed his Windows user account and created a new one. I thought this would allow me to start him from scratch.

I then ran a scan of the PC using AVG Free. No viruses were detected. I then viewed the Virus Vault. There were approx 3 dozen Trojan horses detected since 2005, but none with today’s date. I selected and wiped them all.

I could then login into my husband’s account as normal (I have not copied back his documents and settings files, so his desktop is the default). Both he and I continued to get the Winpatrol request about the NetProject dll.

Using a different computer, I Googled “NetProject sbmdl.dll” and found many forums but liked this one the best :)

Based on your guides (G2G Guides), I have now used my 2nd computer to download your recommended programs and started running (and installed them when necessary) on the problem PC:

  • Installed and ran ATF Cleaner and cleaned all items
  • Deinstalled my AVG Free
  • Installed the AVG 30day free trial you recommend and set the settings accordingly
  • Temporarily reconnected the Ethernet cable to update the virus database, then disconnected again
  • Rebooted into Safe Mode
  • Logged in Administrator account
  • Ran AVG and did a Complete System Scan
  • A number of viruses found – did Complete All Actions
  • Went to Report tab, but no reports (confirmed that Settings was set to create report after every scan)
  • Rebooted, logged in as me
  • Installed SuperAntiSpyware Home Ed
  • Temporarily reconnected the Ethernet cable to update the virus database
  • Started the scan
A few minutes in, a flashing yellow triangle alert appeared in the system tray called System Alert: [email protected]. It seemed odd due to a spelling error in the Protection section “Protection: Click this balloon (sic) to download official security software.”
I was still connected to internet when this appeared.
Screen shot

I then disconnected the Ethernet cable again (forgot to do that when running the scan).
While the scan was running, I looked up the Trojan name on your site and found some directions for fixing it Trojan fix.
So I stopped the scan and started on these tips.
I deinstalled HijackThis and reinstalled with folder name GeekHijackThis
I ran HJT and also created the HJT uninstall list
I installed and started to run Vundo, but decided I was getting in over my head with too many changing variables, so I stopped the scan and posted this thread instead.

My HJT reports are listed below. Thank you for any help you can provide.

Hello DaleR

Welcome to G2Go. :)
================
Please download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri) to your Desktop.

Double-click SmitfraudFix.exe
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter"; a text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present).

**If the tool fails to launch from the Desktop, please move SmitfraudFix.exe directly to the root of the system drive (usually C:), and launch from there.

Note : process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.

Thank you for the very quick reply!
I have tried downloading SmitFruad from your link and 3 other sites, to my working laptop (lots of free space) and to an empty flash drive. Each time, at the 99% complete mark, I get an access denied message screen shot
This is on my GOOD computer, not the one with the problem. I have been using this good one all day to download recommended apps (AVG, HJT, ATF, etc) all day without a problem. Any ideas???? Thanks.

Ok great. :)
==============
Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu with options should appear;
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press "Enter".
  • Choose your usual account.
Once in Safe Mode, double-click on SmitfraudFix.exe
Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press "Enter" to delete infected files.

You will be prompted : "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ?"; answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter" in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.

The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found); answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter".

The tool may need to restart your computer to finish the cleaning process; if it doesn't, please restart it into Normal Windows.
A text file will appear onscreen, with results from the cleaning process; please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.
The report can also be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt

Warning : running option #2 can\will remove your Desktop background.
==============================================================
Please post a new Hijackthis log as well please.

Thanks Kahdah. The process ran a little differently than described. After selecting option 2, the process ran. It did the registry prompt, but didn't say anything about the wininet.dll file. Also, a Disk Cleanup dialogue appeared (I did not run this process). I cancelled it after SmitFraudFix was quit.
screen shot

Also, the rapport.txt file displayed automatically -- I did not need to reboot. I have posted that file, plus the one I found at the C root after I rebooted just in case they are different.

I forgot to run HJT when I was in Safe Mode -- the report attached was created after I rebooted. Hope this is okay.

Good morning (afternoon) Kahdah. Thanks for all the help yesterday.
I ran HJT and fixd those 4 files. Attached are the results of running DSS.
While I don't understand the detailed contents of these files, some of the remarks they contain make me think I should inform you that while I was waiting on your last reply and before I ran these latest tasks, I did try to reorganize my husband's (Jeff) My Documents folder (i.e., create a new one and mve his docs there - I had limited success). That might account for some of the error messages below.

OK it appears that one of your hard drives is going bad.
Drive D:\
don't know if that is an important drive but you might want to try to back it up before loosing the info off of it.
=====================================

Go ahead and delet the SMitfraudfix folder and icon from off of your desktop.
Also the dss.exe icon off of your desktop.
Also delete this folder >C:\Deckard (If you cannot delete it now try Safe Mode)
=======================================================
Then
Please do an online scan with Kaspersky WebScanner
(This scanner is for use with internet explorer only)
Click on "Accept"

You will be promted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
  • The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
  • Now click on Scan Settings
  • In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
    Extended (if available otherwise Standard)
    • Scan Options:
    Scan Archives
    Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK
  • Now under select a target to scan:Select My Computer
  • This will program will start and scan your system.
  • The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
  • Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
    • Now click on the Save as Text button:
  • Save the file to your desktop.
  • Copy and paste that information in your next post.

Hi Kahdah. After I ran the OT prog, I got a couple of warnings from WinPatrol that changes were being made to some browser settings -- I accepted them, assuming they were the result of the OT moves. After I copied the log file, I got a warning about another change. I wasn't sure about this one, so I DID NOT accept it (my PC was disconnected from the network all through this). See screen shot. Was this supposed to happen? Should I have accepted this change?

Here are the log files resulting from this stage of the battle.

I can't believe how fast you reply! Is this an automated response system? :-)

So I am kicking myself that I didn't do screen grabs of the Winpatrol dialogues that I accepted.
I may also have made an error in that I had attached my external hard drive to do back-ups after your warning about my D drive, but disconnected it before I ran the K scan -- maybe I introduced something that was on my external drive?

Anyhow, it will likely take a few hours to run, but I am now running the latest malware scan on ALL my drives -- the internal C: and D:, also the G: that is my external drive and the flash drive I have been using to copy files between my working laptop and sick PC.

I'll post the results as they become available. Thanks again -- bad enough I've spent my whole weekend on this, hate to have spent yours too :-(
