I was having a terrible time with malware and a virus. Decided to reformat HD. Did that from comand prompt. Now I can't get my restore disc to complete. It usually either freezes up @ about 9 minutes left to complete or I will get the blue screen of death. I have been trying for two days with no success. I am communicating on another computer. Can anyone help.

I got to the recovery console and did another reformat of the drive. When I try to load the recovery diskete, It started but it starts to pop up warning messages like the followinng:
"Problem in estracting process: WINDOWS\system32\$ncsp$.inf couldn't be opened!"

The specific files it defines is different each time I retry to recover. Some of the system files that have been displayed as a problem during various tries are as follows:
igfxsrvc.lrc
l3codecp.acm
igfxsrvc.dll
ifpsd11n.dll
logagent.exe
itimg11.dll
msis2.dll
perfh009.dat
qasf.dll
wmadmod.dll
wmnetmgr.dll
wmp.dll
There have been others displayed at various attempts.
The machine is as follows:
Model Insignia (sold by bestbuy)
xp home edition w/sp2
2.8 GHz Intel Pentium4
160GB Hard Drive
1024 MB DDR SDRAM
DVD-RW and CD-ROM Drives
6 USB 2.0 ports
3 IEEE Firewire ports
Media Card Reader
No Floppy Drive

I can get to dos through the recovery console by using another cd from another computer, as the recovery disk for the Insignia doesn't give that option when it's loaded.

Did this Recovery CD come with your computer (what computer brand is it, anyway?), or you made them by yourself?
Did you try to clean the CD in question?

Which drive are you trying to install from, the DVD or the CD-RW? Which ever one you are using, try the other. If you can't boot from the other, you can see if it's setable in BIOS Setup.

If not, you should be able to open the computer case and disconnect the current master optical drive that you are booting from (it will be on the last IDE connector on the cable) and plug that into the other optical drive. This is temporary, just for the install.

Try the install again and it may go okay. If so, once the install is complete, reconnect the drives as they were.

This is a case where jumpering the optical drives for CS (Cable Select) is a good idea.

I figured I couldn’t hurt anything to try to run the recovery disk again while I was waiting for a reply. I did it before the post asking me to try another drive to load the disk. Here is a complete list of each warning messages that were displayed during the attempt to install.

Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:

Please re-install a copy of the above file.

After reading your post I did the following:
I removed the optical drives and replaced them with another drive from a different computer that I know is in good working condition.

I restarted the computer went to the recovery and started it in a nondestructive mode.

Just crashed at about 42% complete with blue death screen. Here is what it says:

A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to you computer.

If this is the first time you’ve seen this Stop error screen, Follow these steps:

Check to be sure you have adequate disk space. If a driver is identified in the stop message, disable the driver or check with the manufacturer for driver updates. Try Changing video adapters.

Check with you hardware vendor for any BIOS updates. Disable BIOS memory options such as caching or shadowing. If you need to use Safe mode to remove or disable components, restart your comuter, press F8 to select Advanced Startup Options, and then select safe mode.

Technical information:

*** STOP: 0x0000008E (0xC0000005,0x80468F57,0xF769ABE8,0x00000000)

This last try makes about 15 times the install has failed after skipping various files each time and trying different drives. This is the most I’ve typed in my life. Hope you guys & girls can help.

STOP: 0x0000008E (0xC0000005,0x80468F57,0xF769ABE8,0x00000000) error points to some hardware problem. It may have several causes, but I'd start with RAM.
If you have more then 1 RAM stick, try them on one-by-one basis. You may also run memtest: http://www.memtest86.com/

You can use another computer to create bootable CD. At my link, click on Technical Info in left column, and it'll tell you how to do it.

I don't know whether It was a bad ram chip( I removed one chip) or I corrected the problem by refreshing the BIOS. I got the windows home edition to install. I then installed windows professional update disk. It intalled and then I had to use "winupdate repair.bat" to get all the xp and windows updates to install. I got all of them installed and rebooted when needed. I then installed internet explorer 7 which lnstalled and rebooted ok. I then tried to install windows media player 11. It seemed to install OK and when it was finished it asked me to reboot, I did. When it tried to restart I got the following BSOD messages. I tried five times and here are the five messages:

stop: 0X00000019 (0X00000020,0X81D1D1C8A8,0X81D1C9E0,0X1A270001)

stop: 0X00000019 (0X00000020,82282E78,0x2282fb0,0x1a270009)

stop: 0X00000019 (0X00000020,081F3618,0x81F3750,0x1A70021)

stop: 0X00000019 (0X00000020,0X1F7E9E0,0X81F7EB18,0X1A270021)

stop: 0X00000019 (0X00000020,0X81F7E9E0,0X81F8E6F8,0X1A270009)

I then restarted in safe mode and removed both windows media player 11 and media player 11 runtime. I rebooted in "last good configuration that worked" and all seems to be OK again. I have the one ram chip out. Is there a ultility I can get that can check my ram? Are the BSOD messages still indicating hardware problems?
Thanks for all the help so far.

0X00000019 is typically a driver problem, not hardware. May WMP11 and your sound are not compatible. Try getting the latest sound driver installed then try it again if you really want WMP11. I don't have or want WMP11 or IE7.

There are two programs that are normally used to test computer memory, Memtest86 and Microsoft Memory Diagnostic. They are available from the following locations:

Memtest86
Microsoft Memory Diagnostic

Next time, you troubleshoot, it's a good idea to try one fix at a time.
