Hello GeekstoGo,

I completed all the Pre-Hijack This Log steps, though I do have a concern about Windows Update - specifically, it wants me to install the Microsoft One Note 2003 SP3 pack; I do have Microsoft One Note 2003 on my system, only because it was default software that came with my Toshiba Satellite A75-S213 laptop that I bought in October 2005. However, I do not have any other MS Office 2003 components; I have MS Office 2000 and was not sure whether that update would conflict with my MS Office 2000 components, of which Word 2000 I use quite frequently and can't afford to have malfunctioning. Otherwise, I have all the "critical" updates recommended by Windows Update.

I don't know whether I should just uninstall One Note 2003 instead of installing the update? I think I tried MS One Note 2003 once, but have not used it otherwise, so uninstalling would probably not be a problem for me if it would be considered the easier and quicker solution (it supposedly would take me 2-3 hours to download the Windows SP3 Update - I'm on dial-up.) Please let me know about this - thank you.

Regarding the original infections - Back on Friday, February 22, I ran AVG Antivirus through a normally scheduled scan and found the following:

wrlzma.dll - "Trojan horse Clicker.LMJ" - in
C:\Program Files\Webroot\Spy Sweeper\wrlzma.dll

ALSO IN:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\wrlzma.dll

AVG Antivirus was able to delete both of them. However, the next day, Saturday, February 23, AVG Antivirus found the following:

C:\System Volume Information]\_restore\{AA6C8498-140E-441D-9DDE-0826BE9E5F33}\RP160\A0032826.dll
C:\System Volume Information]\_restore\{AA6C8498-140E-441D-9DDE-0826BE9E5F33}\RP160\A0032827.dll

AVG Antivirus was able to get rid of these as well.

After AVG Antivirus first detected a problem, I ran both AVG AntiSpyware and SuperAntiSpyware - AVG found nothing wrong, but SuperAntiSpyware found the following:

Rogue.MalWarrior [1 items ]
HKCR\TacOnlyOne

It supposedly healed it.

It was after the two AVG AV examinations and the AVG AS and SuperAntiSpyware examinations that I went through the pre-HJT procedures you suggest - I ran ATF Cleaner, made a new Restore Point, and ran the recommended programs.

AVG Antivirus has not found any malicious files of any kind since in two scans done on Sunday, February 24.

AVG AntiSpyware and SuperAntiSpyware both did not detect any kind of malware. However, Panda ActiveScan says that there are two infections, one that is "Spyware" and one that is "Hijackers/Rootkits," and mentioned the following:

Incident Status Location

Adware:adware/wupd Not disinfected Windows Registry
Potentially unwanted tool:Application/NirCmd.A

As mentioned above, I ran Windows Update, but was not sure whether the recommended update would conflict with my Office 2000 components; please let me know whether to install the update, whether to uninstall Microsoft One Note 2003, or to do neither - thank you.

Regarding any evidence of malware on my system, there have been no noticeable effects; in fact, I had no idea there was malware on my system or that anything was wrong until AVG Antivirus mentioned the first sign of infection on Friday - everything seems to be running normally as far as I can tell.

Even so, I'm not sure whether I'm still infected or not, so I posted my HJT log below (please note that I have the old version of HJT from the last time I used it, around July to August of 2007; I did not download the new TrendMicro version - I hope that is not a problem):

Please let me know if I'm still infected and what exactly this malware is capable of doing (whether they're keystroke loggers, steal personal data, etc.) - I recently completed a few PayPal and credit card transactions about a week or so ago; it might have been before I was currently infected (last transactions were around Feb. 18-19,) as there has been no suspicious activity with my PayPal account and my credit card, and I also changed the passwords to my PayPal and eBay accounts as well, but I want to be sure that my data and accounts are as safe as possible. Thank you.

Please take care and have a good day!

Sincerely,

Joseph Chengery

Hello Rorschach112,

No, I haven't noticed anything unusual - I thought my computer was running just a tiny bit slower than before, but I first noticed that after I installed ZoneAlarm Spy Blocker around the end of January/early February, and the dropoff in speed was barely noticeable, like maybe an extra .5 to 1 second to open a new window, so I suspect it was just from installing another program that uses a little more of the 1GB RAM I have. In addition, all the tests I ran since I installed ZoneAlarm Spy Blocker didn't detect anything (AVG AV, AVG AS, Super Antispyware, SpyBot, Ad-Aware) until that first notice by AVG AV and Super Antispyware around Feb. 22 (3-4 weeks after installing ZoneAlarm Spy Blocker,) so I suspect that the very slight dropoff in speed was due to ZoneAlarm Spy Blocker and not to any spyware on my system.

That's why I was surprised when AVG Antivirus and Super Antispyware reported that they had found something on or around Feb. 22, since I hadn't noticed anything out of the ordinary. However, as mentioned earlier, since the initial diagnoses, they haven't found anything since. Just Panda ActiveScan (though I only ran it once,) but everything else after that seems to report that there is nothing here, and that includes Kaspersky's Online Scanner, AVG AV, AVG AS, SpyBot, and Super Antispyware.

In fact, my daily scanning from AVG Antivirus just finished as I was writing this, and it reports that there is nothing malicious here, so perhaps I'm clean now. Everything seems to be in order.

I appreciate your help and the resources you mentioned - thank you.

Please take care, keep up the great work, and have a good weekend!

Sincerely,

Joseph Chengery

Your logs are clean ! We need to do a few things

You can delete the tools that we used

Now we need to create a new System Restore point.

Click Start Menu > Run > type (or copy and paste)

%SystemRoot%\System32\restore\rstrui.exe

Press OK. Choose Create a Restore Point then click Next. Name it and click Create, when the confirmation screen shows the restore point has been created click Close.

Next goto Start Menu > Run > type

cleanmgr

Click OK, Disk Cleanup will open and start calculating the amount of space that can be freed, Once thats finished it will open the Disk Cleanup options screen, click the More Options tab then click Clean up on the system restore area and choose Yes at the confirmation window which will remove all the restore points except the one we just created.

To close Disk Cleanup and remove the Temporary Internet Files detected in the initial scan click OK then choose Yes on the confirmation window.

Your using an old version of Adobe Acrobat Reader, this can leave your pc open to vulnerabilities, you can update it here :
http://www.adobe.com.../readstep2.html

You now need to update your Java and remove your older versions.

Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components.

* Click Start > Control Panel.
* Click Add/Remove Programs.
* Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE) in the name.
* Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.

Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE), and install it to your computer from
here

Below I have included a number of recommendations for how to protect your computer against malware infections.

* Keep Windows updated by regularly checking their website at :
http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/
This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer.

* To reduce re-infection for malware in the future, I strongly recommend installing these free programs:
SpywareBlaster protects against bad ActiveX
IE-SPYAD puts over 5000 sites in your restricted zone so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all
Have a look at this tutorial for IE-Spyad here

* SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.

Make Internet Explorer more secure
  • Click Start > Run
  • Type Inetcpl.cpl & click OK
  • Click on the Security tab
  • Click Reset all zones to default level
  • Make sure the Internet Zone is selected & Click Custom level
  • In the ActiveX section, set the first two options ("Download signed and unsigned ActiveX controls) to "Prompt", and ("Initialize and Script ActiveX controls not marked as safe") to "Disable".
  • Next Click OK, then Apply button and then OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

* MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well known ad sites and other bad sites. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer, meaning it will be difficult to infect yourself in the future.

* Please consider using an alternate browser. Mozilla's Firefox browser is fantastic; it is much more
secure than Internet Explorer, immune to almost all known browser hijackers, and also has the best built-in pop up
blocker (as an added benefit!) that I have ever seen. If you are interested, Firefox may be downloaded from
Here

* Take a good look at the following suggestions for malware prevention by reading Tony Klein’s article 'How Did I Get Infected In The First Place'
Here

Thank you for your patience, and performing all of the procedures requested.

Hello Rorschach112,

I appreciate the suggestions - thank you.

A few questions about them:

1. Which Java Update is best for me - my Add/Remove Programs says that I currently have "Java™ 6 Update 3," but I think I downloaded "JRE 6 Update 3," so should I download "JRE 6 Update 4" or "JDK 6 Update 4"? I don't work with code and create applets or applications, so would "JRE 6 Update 4" be the best one to download for me?

2. I've heard that Adobe Acrobat Reader 8 cannot read downloaded ebooks you purchase from places like Amazon.com and eBooks.com, though I also heard that there is a way to get AAR 8 to read ebooks, much like AAR 7 does. That's the main reason I didn't download AAR 8. Isn't there an extra application or something that you need for AAR 8 to read downloaded ebooks?

Looking around, I found this from eBooks.com:
http://www.ebooks.co.../Adobe_Home.asp

It seems Adobe has provided a "Digital Edition" reader for Ebooks - how secure is it and would that be the best version to download to replace Adobe Acrobat Reader 7 or would AAR 8 still be the best choice to download and replace AAR 7?

3. Is the IE-SpyAd and MVPS Host File downloads updated because I downloaded both of those back in January 2006 after my first spyware infection on my current laptop? However, I have not downloaded them since - do I just download them again and will they properly replace the existing versions or do I need to delete them first (do I need special instructions to do that or not?) and then install the new files?

I'd greatly appreciate any help and advice you can provide - thank you.

Please take care, keep up the great work, and have a good weekend!

Sincerely,

Joseph Chengery

Hello again Rorschach112,

I was wondering - is it worth downloading Lavasoft AdAware's new 2007 version?

From the CNet Editors' Review and several people who have downloaded it, it seems to be more unstable and confusing than the SE version, plus it now runs in the background full-time - while this might provide better protection, it also sounds like it uses up more resources as well. Would you recommend I download and use this as well or would SpyBot, AVG AV, AVG AS, Super Antispyware, Spyware Blaster, Spyware Guard, IE-SpyAd, MVPS Host File, and tightening up IE and/or using FireFox be enough protection? I'm just not sure if it's worth downloading due to its instability and the fact that it's running all the time, even being hinted at as "Spyware" by the Editors' Review on CNet (probably because it montiors everything the user is doing, not because it's considered malicious like real Spyware is.)

I've used Lavasoft AdAware's last two versions (6 & SE) and liked using both of them, thinking both were pretty effective at helping to keep my system clean, but am uncertain about the 2007 version. I'd appreciate your advice - thank you.

Please take care, keep up the great work, and have a good weekend!

Sincerely,

Joseph Chengery

Hello

You want to download JRE 6 Update 4

I've heard that Adobe Acrobat Reader 8 cannot read downloaded ebooks you purchase from places like Amazon.com and eBooks.com

I am surprised to hear that, if it is true that is bad practice on Adobes part. This step isn't that important, so don't bother to update it if it is going to give you that problem.

s the IE-SpyAd and MVPS Host File downloads updated because I downloaded both of those back in January 2006 after my first spyware infection on my current laptop?

That is fine then, no need to re-download them

is it worth downloading Lavasoft AdAware's new 2007 version?

No it isn't very good anymore. I recommend SUPERAntiSpyware, Dr. Web Cureit, and Malware Bytes Anti Malware

Hello Rorschach112,

I appreciate the suggestions on the antispyware software - I'll make sure to check those two additional ones you mentioned.

Yes, I too was surprised by AAR 8 not being able to read ebooks - that's why a lot of the ebook sites like eBooks.com and Powells.com are suggesting you use AAR 7. I think one site (I don't remember which) mentioned that you can add some additional download to AAR 8 in order for it to be able to read the ebooks you've purchased, but I only found that suggestion on one site; the other sites suggest avoiding AAR 8.

I only found out about the Adobe Digital Edition (DE) in doing some research before replying in my last post, but I'll probably just stay with AAR 7 if it's not a problem - I know it works with the ebooks I've purchased, and the AAR file takes a while to download on dial-up.

Two other questions:

1. I belong to one survey-taking website - MySurvey - I know when I log in to take a survey, they attempt to redirect me to the survey that I'm about to take, but often, I can't access the survey, just stopping right at the blank screen. I think I started having this problem not long after I implemented the security changes to IE recommended here after my first malware infection. Is that likely due to the security settings I've installed on IE? Would resetting them to "Default" lead to me being able to access the survey, then I can reset them back to the higher security setting after I'm done taking the survey? Or is something else causing this?

2. On some Internet marketing websites, I attempt to opt-in for more information, but some marketers use HTML forms and the message, "Your Current Security Settings Do Not Allow You to Send HTML Forms." Again, I think I started having this problem not long after I implemented the security changes to IE recommended here after my first malware infection. How can I send these types of forms? Is it via the IE Security settings and changing them to default or is something else causing this?

I'd greatly appreciate your help on these topics - thank you.

Please take care, keep up the great work, and have a good weekend!

Sincerely,

Joseph Chengery

Yes, yes, and yes

No idea, it may be related to the security settings. Annoying that you are getting these problems.

Maybe just leave the Internet Explorer security settings then, or use Firefox :)

Hello Rorschach112,

I'll have to check out FireFox - after all, I could download it, try it, and still have IE as a back-up if needed.

I think that is all - Thank you for all your help - I greatly appreciate it! :-)

Please take care, keep up the great work, and have a good day!
