Hi,

This is my first time posting here, so just let me know if i left anything out. I've been trying to get rid of this start page virus for about a week now to no avail. I've used all the programs that you guys suggested and also Trend Micro's sysclean.exe. All the programs will fix it, but there is something else that keeps reloading the se.dll in my temp folder. Now, though, after I ran the AVG scan, an error pops up anytime try to open an IE browser or windows explorer. It says Error loading se.dll. Access is denied. AVG also pops up with a window that says virus detected anytime this happens. Thank you for your time.

Zach

Welcome to GTG.

I will help you remove this. First though, we need to run this program.

Download CWShredder http://www.greyknigh.../CWShredder.exe

Right click a blank part of your desktop & select New->Folder. Call it SPFix. Go to http://www.derbilk.de/404.html and download SpSeHjfix. Get the one that's specified for your Operating System. So if you have Windows 98, get the one that's listed for Windows 98.

Disconnect from the net and close all programs. Run SpSeHjfix and click on 'Start Disinfection'. When it's finished it will reboot your machine to finish the cleaning process. The tool creates a log of the fix which will appear in the folder.

If it doesn't find any of the SE files or any hidden reinstallers it will say system clean and not go on to next stage.

Now run the CWShredder and hit the Fix button.

Reboot and post a fresh HijackThis log and the log that was created by SpSeHjfix.

Ok, I ran that program. It seems like it worked, although there are still a few small leftover problems. Now, since I ran that program. When i try to start IE normally, no window ever shows up and no process ever starts. I do have a shortcut to a link on my desktop and when i open that, it works fine, and i can go to other websites also. So it's not really that big of deal since i can do that or use FireFox also.

Next is when the computer starts up, and error message comes up saying "Error loading C:\ ... \cdaEngine0400.dll The specified module could not be found."

Thanks for all your help.

We'll fix that all up now.

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. You should 'not' have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below.

Reboot into Safe Mode by hitting the F8 key until menu shows up. In some systems, this may be the F5 key, so try that if F8 doesn't work. Make sure to close any open browsers. Uninstall the following via the Add/Remove Panel (Start->(Settings)->Control Panel->Add/Remove Programs) if they exist:

WildTangent - This is an online gaming package that is installed by a number of third party applications and even OEMs, ISPs and AIM. The games aspect of this is really rather cool. The being installed without you asking for it isn't cool at all. They collect information about you and your usage. We recommend uninstalling it.

Run a scan in HijackThis. Check each of the following and hit 'Fix checked' (after checking them) if they still exist (make sure not to miss any):

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page =
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page =
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant =
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [WildTangent CDA] RUNDLL32.exe "C:\Program Files\WildTangent\Apps\CDA\cdaEngine0400.dll",cdaEngineMain
O16 - DPF: {3A7FE611-1994-4EF1-A09F-99456752289D} - http://install.wildt...iveLauncher.cab

Delete the following Files/Folders (delete folders if no filename is specified) according to their directory (if none, just do a search for them) and delete them if they exist:

C:\Program Files\WildTangent\

Restart. No need for a new log, you should be ok now.

Turn off system restore by right clicking on My Computer and go to Properties->System Restore and check the box for Turn off System Restore. Click Apply and then OK. Restart your computer and uncheck the same box to enable System Restore.

Your log is clean.

To help prevent future spyware installations/infections, please read the Anti-Spyware Tutorial and use the tools provided.

Are there any problems now? If not, you should be set to go.
