I just bought a new computer and put it together myself. It is a Intel Core 2 Duo E6600 (2.4Ghz) on a Asus P532N-SLI Premium motherboard. I have 4 gigs of memory (2 2gig chips). The hard drives are SATA (2 320-GB) and I'm running the internet wirelessly. When I first turn on the computer, all the applications will run fine such as internet explorer, windows live messenger, and others like adobe software. After it has either been left on for like 30 minutes or returned from standby, the computer really lags in some of it's applciations. For example, in internet explorer when I try to go to different website it really starts to lag and taking a long time to load a website at times. Also when I try and open a new tab in IE7, sometimes it takes a minute or two. It's very strange because this is a brand new computer and it doesn't always happen. It seems that when I restart the computer and try to run something again, it works fine. Yesterday, I had Windows Live Messenger and Ineternet Explorer open and when I tried to play music in iTunes it really started to lag and the music was even choppy because of it. When I go to Task Manager by pressing CTRL/ALT/DELETE, it comes up fairly quickly and shows the CPU running at 100%. I'm very sceptical that Windows Live Messenger, Internet Explorer, and iTunes will run my Intel Core 2 Duo (2.4Ghz) at full capacity. Please let me know what I can check to see why this is.

I would first check your average internet bandwidth since most of the tasks/applications you mention are related to downloading pages or streaming, and other internet-related stuff. Confirm you are getting the sustained bandwidth you should be getting before looking elsewhere.

Do you suggest checking the average internet bandwidth with a website or how?

At Speedtest.net, my download was 34067 kb/s and my upload was 2228 kb/s. That seems a little high, I don't know if I beleive that. :-)

go to START..RUN...type in MSCONFIG...then click on OK or press ENTER..
click on START UP TAB...uncheck everything EXCEPT your AV and firewall...if its a laptop you have to be careful about what you uncheck or your touch pad and wireless and things like that will not function for you..
google each start up item to decide if you need it to load with windows...unchecking them does not remove them ..they are still available to use...

the next thing we are going to do is turn off indexing ....its a resource hog and if you aren't searching for things on your computer 10 times a day it will only slow down your system....

click on start...my computer...right click on C: drive....properties...on the general tab..uncheck ...allow indexing on this drive....if you do not have the box on your system...

then START...RUN...type in SERVICES.MSC...then OK...scroll down until you find INDEXING SERVICE...click on it and in the general tab set it to DISABLED...then exit

To clean your temp folder, recycle bin, index.dat etc..please download this free tool...

CCleaner

Don't install any Toolbars, or other programs, should it ask you...Just
uncheck the option of installing the Yahoo toolbar....if you get
the slim version it does not have the toolbar
thats the one I recommend...

It will put a shortcut on your Desktop.

Click on CCleaner to start it....
Before first use...
Select Options then Advanced.
UNCHECK "Only delete files in Windows Temp folder older than 48 hours"
The rest of the standard settings are fine...

Then click "Run Cleaner"

DO NOT USE ANY OF THE OTHER TOOLS...RUNNING THEM MAY CAUSE OTHER PROBLEMS

next get diskeeper lite here...

after installing it...click on the icon...close the "nag" screen...click on your c drive to select it ...then down towards the bottom ...click on defragment now...first time you use it it may take 15 to 30 minutes to complete...do it about every two weeks and it will complete in about 7 minutes...
reboot and tell me hows its running...
no joy
go here and get everest home...install and launch it...click the + by computer...click on sensor...get a screenshot and post it so I can check your temps and voltages...

Temps and voltages look okay to me. You said you have 4GB of ram. Try removing 2GB and running for awhile, see if that makes a difference?

Are you using any of the boot.ini memory switches, like /3GB or /USERVA?

I don't know anything about boot switches, so I'm guessing I don't have that. As far as the memory. I will try to take one of the 2GB sticks out, but why? if you don't mind me asking...

It's a waste of money to install more then 3GB of memory on a 32 bit Windows XP ( or any 32 bit Operating System for that matter) system. Some times it even degrades performance though I don't know why.

Read here for info:

This MS article has some excellent info on >3GB of memory, using the /3GB and /USERVA switches.

wow, very interesting...

So are you saying it is possible that if I remove one of my 2GB memory cards that my computer (now running on 2GB of memory) may run faster?

Yes, that is what I'm saying. Whether it actually happens or not is a different story :)

so if that is the resolution to my problem, then the way I will know that is if my computer does not lag anymore using just 1 2GB memory stick, right?
