Hi. I have read the earlier posts about the smitfield virus. I am also a victim, and I have a red circle with a white cross at my tool tray. Pornographic webpages kept popping up. I am not sure whether I should follow exactly what was prescribed for the earlier victims, so...

Here's my HJT logfile:

Please read these instructions carefully and print them out! Be sure to follow ALL instructions!

Go to Start > Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs and remove the following programs, if found:

Security IGuard
Virtual Maid
Search Maid

Exit Add/Remove Programs.

*IMPORTANT*CLICK THIS LINK TO LEARN HOW TO VIEW HIDDEN FILES

*Click Here to download Killbox by Option^Explicit.
*Extract the program to your desktop and double-click on its folder, then double-click on Killbox.exe to start the program.
*In the killbox program, select the Delete on Reboot option.
*In the field labeled Full Path of File to Delete enter the file paths listed below ONE AT A TIME (EXACTLY as it appears, please double check to make sure! I would just copy each file path and paste it in the field) MAKE SURE TO ENTER ALL FILE PATHS!:

C:\wp.exe
C:\wp.bmp
C:\Windows\sites.ini
C:\Windows\popuper.exe
C:\WINDOWS\System32\wldr.dll
C:\Windows\System32\helper.exe
C:\Windows\System32\intmonp.exe
C:\Windows\System32\msmsgs.exe
C:\Windows\System32\ole32vbs.exe
C:\Windows\system32\msole32.exe

Press the button that looks like a red circle with a white X in it after each one. When it asks if you would like to delete on reboot, press the YES button, when it asks if you want to reboot now, press the NO button. Do this after each one until you have entered the LAST file path I have listed above. After that LAST file path has been entered press the YES button at both prompts so that your computer restarts. If you recieve an error message "PendingRenameOperation...." and your computer doesn't restart, please restart it manually.

While your computer is restarting, tap the F8 key continually until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight Safe Mode, then hit enter.

Make sure you can view hidden files.

Using Windows Explorer, delete the following (please do NOT try to find them by "search" because they will not show up that way)

FOLDERS to delete (in bold) if found:

C:\Program Files\Search Maid
C:\Program Files\Virtual Maid
C:\Windows\System32\Log Files
C:\Program Files\Security IGuard

Reboot into normal mode.

*Download and install Registrar Lite version 2.00
*Double click the purple Registrar Lite icon on your desktop.
*Copy the line below and paste it into the "Address" field (located at the top) of the program:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies

*Click the "Go" button.
*It will take you into the "Policies" folder.
*Locate the "System" folder (in the right panel)
*If found, right-click on the System folder and go to Delete
*Be very careful that you only delete the System folder that is inside the Policies folder.

Reboot your computer again.

1.) Download the Hoster from HERE Press "Restore Original Hosts" and press "OK". Exit Program.

2.) Download: http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/DelDomains.inf
To use: right-click and select: Install (no need to restart)
Note: This will remove all entries in the "Trusted Zone" and "Ranges" also.

3.) Download, install, and run CleanUp!

4.) Run this online virus scan: ActiveScan - Save the results from the scan!

Post a new HiJackThis log.
And tell us if the startpage you have was set by yourself. It looks kind of suspicious.

Regards,

Pieter

The problem still remains. And the start page was not set by me. Even if I tried to change it to a page I want, it reverts back to this weird start page immediately.

I have followed all instructions EXCEPT

1) After running Killbox and rebooting, I tried to start up with Safe Mode, but I got the error message which said HIMEM.SYS is missing and I can't start up in Safe Mode. So I started up with Normal Mode and proceeded with the rest of the instructions.

2) Using Registrar Lite, under "Policies" folder, I could not find the "Systems" folder.

Here is the new HJT log:

For solving the missing the HIMEM.SYS problem... I realised I have misplaced the Windows 98 startup floppy disk... can a Win95 floppy work? :tazz:

yep. found the win98 floppy and copied the himem.sys file over. but when i tried to start in safe mode, the same error message appears:

HIMEM.SYS has detected unreliable XMS memory at address 02000278
XMS Driver not installed

After I press Enter, it says HIMEM.SYS is missing.

I'm afraid that means you have a hardware problem

Himem.sys will do the memory check automatically when booting to Safe Mode in Win9X. The general rule is that if himem.sys finds bad ram then then its truly a problem. Himem.sys is a Microsoft DOS utility and if it says your ram is unreliable than Windows is surely not going to like it either.

Also have a look at:

Since we can't work from safe mode, we would have to do it from DOS.

Can you make a list of the files/folder you were unable to delete?

I could write you a batch file to run from DOS to delete them.

Pieter

Yuck. So all the folders are still there?

Save the part in bold bewlo to notepad and save the file as nomaid.bat
For your own ease of use save it directly to the C: directory

@ ECHO off
deltree /y C:\Program Files\Search Maid
deltree /y C:\Program Files\Virtual Maid
deltree /y C:\Windows\System32\Log Files
deltree /y C:\Program Files\Security IGuard

Now boot your computer from the bootdisk and execute nomaid.bat

Yep, executed the batch file and got this message: Bad command or file name, four times. So I guess the files are not present after all... But that ugly red circle with white cross is still there in my tool tray! My homepage is still cannot be set! And the disgusting pop-ups still come at random!

Thanks in advance for bearing with my rants. :tazz:

I think I made a mistake. Forgot that DOS and batch files don't always accept the same commands and switches. It's been a long time ago I actually used DOS. :tazz:

Make a new file but this time use:

@ ECHO off
del C:\Program Files\Search Maid\*.*
del C:\Program Files\Virtual Maid\*.*
del C:\Windows\System32\Log Files\*.*
del C:\Program Files\Security IGuard\*.*

Regards,

Pieter

Got this error:

Too many parameters - Files\Search
Too many parameters - Files\Virtual
Too many parameters - Files\*.*
Too many parameters - Files\Security

I thought this could be because of the space, so I tried

deltree /y C:\Program Files\"Search Maid"
deltree /y C:\Program Files\"Virtual Maid"
deltree /y C:\Windows\System32\"Log Files"
deltree /y C:\Program Files\"Security IGuard"

but I got the "Bad command or fie name" error again.
