OK, wow, lots going here. sorry for the delay getting into this, I reverted to my slacker ways all weekend...Samm, Doby, good job so far- but you knew that

first the hard drive....is it a western digital HD by chance? I had that problem once with one of them, jumper settings are everything. and of course the settings are different across manufacturers. it sounds like your OK now, but jumper settings are usually listed on the drive, or they can be looked up online.

sound- MSI board (I have one, so that helps), double check the jumpers, to make sure you have the front audio bypassed. it will be listed in the book for that mobo. sounds like you got that, though, so....
you have the onboard sound enabled in BIOS I assume?

after that, check control panel, sound and audio devices. click the tab on audio. ths will list what device is being used. make sure that is set to the onboard. then click advanced, lets take it down to 2 channel for a moment. get that working, then tackle the 5.1!
headphones are the easiest test, plug them into the green jack of soundcard, if you get sound, we are on the right track.

This is a long shot, but that jumper to bypass the front audio try a different jumper, I mean the little plastic thing the actual jumper you move.
I have seen these defective that they don't make contact

hmmm...
sound from CD-rom sith headphones plugged into front jack on Rom? spin that volume knob too. if not, that could point to a bad drive.

can you get any system sounds, when not trying to play music, etc. for example, windows startup music, or any sound hooks for windows. if not, something is totally whacked with the onboard card.
sorry, I cant remember if you have installed the latest drivers for the sound card. Im guessing its a VIA chipset, so it should be contained in the VIA 4in1 driver (you probably have, just want to make sure).

ive switch the jumpers before and nothing happen. well if my cd-rom is messed up also, i guess i had no luck building my first system lol

i get no system sounds, no sounds at all. I also believe that the onboard is all out of whacked. I was thinking of just buying a sound card...what do you think???

Yes i have downloaded the latest driver for the onboard sound at www.realtek.com.tw

my last best guess would be using the drivers that MSI provides.
that said, I usually avoid using onboard sound, as it uses up more system resources than a separate card. just about any soundcard is usually an upgrade to onboard as well.
soundblaster cards are everywhere, and I rarely see issues with them working. there are plenty of other manufacturers that are quality as well. a sound card doesnt have to be expensive, but they can get that way!

or look at amazon, etc. for used cards as well. if you gotta have it now (I get that way sometimes), your local PC or electronics store will have something in stock.

if you do add a card, go into BIOS and disable the onboard sound.

I don't think I would be able to wait for shipment for a soundcard so im just gonna go to Bestbuy tomorrow and get a soundblaster I saw online. Thanks for your help audioboy. Keep on rockin' \m/
