Hi Lagean. The two most important items that should be installed are an antivirus application and a firewall. There are a number of good free and commercial versions of each. I use a free antivirus program from Avira called AntiVir and a free firewall from Comodo. Here are some links:

AntiVirus:

Firewall:

It is best to have both a firewall and anti virus to protect your system and to keep them updated.

In addition to those, the best thing you can do is be concious of web-browsing and email. Do not go to unknown sites, do not open email from unknown senders, and do not use file-sharing programs.

Cheers.

Thank You! I try to be real careful and I tell my son (17) what to stay away from and he knows to run scans and all, but his friends don't really care. I try putting parental blocks on to keep out some, but it only catches so much.

Again, thank you so much.

Hi Lagean. Yeah, that can always be an issue with kids, especially teenagers. While I don't believe any of these problems were caused by any malware, sometimes people do things on a system that can cause other issues. That's why I never let my kids touch my computer lol. They have their own and if they muck it up by intentionally doing something worng they better learn how to fix it :0

I'm going to close this topic and move it to the HijackThis forum. If you have any future malware related issues please start a new topic in that forum.

Cheers.
