I seem to be having issues beyond my expertise (which isnt saying much)

Windows XP Service Pack 2
Dell Demension Desktop
160 gig HD
1 gig RAM
3.20 mhz Pentium 4 processor

It started about a week ago, somehow I got infected and started seeing all these pop-ups telling me my "computer was infected, click here to downloaded this anti-spy blah blah blah...."

I ignored them and put up with the annoyance, then all of a sudden one night I woke my computer up and they were not there anymore. However the next time I restarted my computer, nothing was there. Windows would load, but all that would show was my background. No desktop icons, no taskbar, no start menu. I could move the mouse, but thats about it, I couldnt even Ctr+alt+del to get the task manager to come up. So thats when I stumbled across this site this morning.

I have already tried some of the things I have seen while browsing through the site, and I have actually got my desktop and taskbar back, but im still having issues.

What I did:

I downloaded ATF_Cleaner.exe and ran it.

I downloaded AVG-Antispyware and installed it, and ran it. It was about halfway through with about 17 errors found when it poped up and said something was wrong with it and it had to close. This was being ran in safe mode, as by this time I was not able to start windows normally yet.

I downloaded and ran Smitfraudfix.exe, did it in safe mode, and thats actually when I got my desktop and everything back, and was able to run windows normally. After that Windows explorer seems to be functioning.

I downloaded SUPERAntispyware.exe, however when I try to install it I get this....."THe windows installer service could not be accessed. THis can occur if you are running windows in safe mode or if the windows installer is not correctly installed....."

I downloaded and ran DSS.exe, and it did give me a log file, not sure what else it did.

I have the log file from Smitfraudfix.exe and from the Dss.exe, and I can post those if they would be helpful, I just ran Hijack this and will post the log below.

Issues im still having:

Cannot connect to the internet( so the anti-spyware tools I was able to run, I was not able to update), windows installer will not work, no sound...windows explorer "looks different", the taskbar doesnt look the same nor do any of the windows. Its as if I have windows 98/95 or something and not windows XP, from the way it looks. To tell you the truth, it seems as if it is still in safe mode, but its not...if that makes any sense.

Then right click on your default connection, usually Local Area Connection or Dial-up Connection if you are using Dial-up, and left click on properties. Please download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) and save it to your Desktop.

• Close all other windows before proceeding.

Thanks for the quick reply,

I do have one question. My internet connection does not seem to be present, and when I went to control pannel-network connections last night, no connections showed up in the window. ( I have been accessing the internet from another computer) Im not around my computer now or I could probably give you more information, I will report back when I get home this evening.

Got back sooner than I thought.

Ok, I downloaded FixWareout and ran it, it did just as you said. When it was done it popped up and said that if I didnt have internet connectivity to open the folder and click "dnsbak.reg"......I did. (still nothing happened)

I ran the DSS scanner again, and this time it only gave me the main.txt file, and not the extra.txt file also. I will include the extra.txt file that it gave me yesterday when i ran it.

After doing these two steps I ran Hijack this also.

I cannot access the internet so I dont think I will be able to do the online scan as you have suggested. When I open my network connections, it is empty, there is not a connection present like the LAN Local Area Connection that use to be there. Ive tried to set up a connection and all I get is the set up wizard and at the endit says my computer should be set up for a broadband connection and working, but there is still no connection there and I cannot connect to the internet.

As for the computer, it is running ok. I have no pop-ups or anything like that, however there is the internet problem, I still have no sound, windows installer still gives me an error message saying the computer is either running in safe mode or the installer is not installed on the computer. I have my desktop and taskbar back as I said earlier. The computer still "looks different" as I said in my original post as far as the desktop, taskbar, start button, and the windows go.

Please download FixWareout from here:

Save it to your desktop and run it. Click Next, then Install, make sure "Run fixit" is checked and click Finish.
The fix will begin; follow the prompts. If your firewall gives an alert, (because this tool will download an additional file from the internet), please don't let your firewall block it, but allow it instead.
Then you will be asked to reboot your computer; please do so. Your system may take longer than usual to load; this is normal.
Once the desktop loads please post the text that will open (report.txt) and a new Hijackthis log

If you have internet connection problems then do the following :

Please go to Start -> Control Panel, and choose Network Connections. Then right click on your default connection, usually Local Area Connection or Dial-up Connection if you are using Dial-up, and left click on properties. Double-click on the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) item and select the radio button that says Obtain DNS servers automatically. Click OK twice, and restart your computer.

Ok.

So I figured out why I was not able to connect to the internet, why windows installer would not work, and why my desktop and windows looked different. Like I said in my original post, it was as if it was in (semi)safe mode.

I went into msconfig and it was set to selective startup. I switched it back to normal startup, and my internet connection is back, as well as the windows back to normal, and I was able to install the SUPERAntiSpyware program that windows installer would not open for previously.

Also, the pop-ups are gone that were giving me a headache, so thats good.

Only thing now is, it is running VERY SLOWLY while starting windows. The desktop loads but it takes forever to "settle back down" and run normally. Also, and this was a problem Ive had for a while, the fan is back to sounding like a jet engine, running very loudly constantly. Im going to go back and run all the anti-spy programs I have for now, when im done I will reboot and post a fresh HJT log.
