Hello,

Thanks in advance for your help. This is a great resource.
I have done everything in "you must read this before..." in order, step by step.

I think I have the NetSky virus.

My Symptoms:
Continual popups including:

Spyware Alert Security Warning! Worm.Win32.NetSky detected on your machine... This Process should be removed from your system... Recommend: Click yes to remove from your system.
Windows Security Alert Windows has detected an Internet attack atempt... Click here to download spyware remover
System Alert System detected virus activities... Please use recommended spyware

New IE 7 windows opening and trying to navigate to safenavweb.com but cannot display the page.

New Icons added to my desktop: Error Cleaner, Privacy Protector, and Spyware & Malware protection. When I float the cursor over them they all show These have also been added to my favorites list.
Also Icons for Norton removal tool, IE, and Yahoo mail have been added to the desktop.

What I have done:
I never clicked any of the popups.
First I ran full scans with Trend Micro Internet Security and Webroot Spysweeper. They are my regular, full time protection. Of course this did not help.
After a google of my problem I quickly found you guys and started to follow the "you must read this before..."

Below are the results in Order.
1. AVG report
2. SUPERAntiSpyware Log
3. Activescan report
4. HighjackThis Log

AVG Report:

I had a little trouble here. It took a couple of tries to succesfully boot into safe mode. Then the first time I ran AVG it found what I think were about eight tracking cookies but nothing else that looked serious. When I selected reports to save the report AVG HAD NOT CREATED A REPORT! There was nothing there. I repeated the prcoess and the second time it did generate a report but of course it found nothing because the first time through I had clicked Apply all actions. Hee is the report generated by the second scan:

Hello

Before we begin, you should save these instructions in Notepad to your desktop, or print them, for easy reference. Much of our fix will be done in Safe mode, and you will be unable to access this thread at that time. If you have questions at any point, or are unsure of the instructions, feel free to post here and ask for clarification before proceeding.

Please download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri) to your Desktop.

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu with options should appear;
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press "Enter".
  • Choose your usual account.
Once in Safe Mode, double-click on SmitfraudFix.exe
Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press "Enter" to delete infected files.

You will be prompted : "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ?"; answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter" in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.

The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found); answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter".

The tool may need to restart your computer to finish the cleaning process; if it doesn't, please restart it into Normal Windows.
A text file will appear onscreen, with results from the cleaning process; please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.
The report can also be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt

Warning : running option #2 on a non infected computer will remove your Desktop background.

Please download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) and save it to your Desktop.
  • Close all other windows before proceeding.
  • Double-click on dss.exe and follow the prompts.
  • If your anti-virus or firewall complains, please allow this script to run as it is not malicious.
  • When it has finished, dss will open two Notepads main.txt and extra.txt -- please copy (CTRL+A and then CTRL+C) and paste (CTRL+V) the contents of main.txt and extra.txt in your next reply.

Hi Rorschach112, Thanks for jumping in to help!

I'm not able to run SmitFraudFix in safe mode. I downloaded it to my desktop, rebooted in safe mode, double-click on the icon.
I get the opening window: "joedanger is not... press a key to continue..." As soon as I press a key the system freezes completely. Can't even shut down/reboot without pushing the button on the case. Tried several times. Downloaded it again, overwriting the original, still no luck. Looked for it in add/remove programs to try to uninstall and download again but it was not there.
It appears that it WOULD run in NORMAL mode. I went as far as pressing a key at the opening screen and it did continue on to the options screen. I didn't go further since you said to it in safe mode.

Scratching my head... hmmm

(see my previous reply - could't run SmartFraudFix in safe mode)

Since I couldn't do that, looking through some of the other posts, I thought it might be helpful to run SmartFraudFix option no. 1. in normal mode in the meantime and post the report to you. So here's that...

Hello Rorschach112<

I found all 11 entries you listed in the results of the HiJackThis System Scan and had it fix them.

I ran OTMoveIT2 and I believe it was successful however I cannot post the results because the program shut down - I saw the results appear in the results box for a brief second and then the program closed. Will it have saved a log of those results?

Here is the new dss log:

Hello

1. Please re-open HiJackThis and choose do a system scan only. Check the boxes next to ONLY the entries listed below(if present):

O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Control Panel present
O21 - SSODL: apdqnxp - {CC7B1291-34F9-4556-9A67-182EEE2BEBFA} - C:\WINDOWS\apdqnxp.dll (file missing)
O21 - SSODL: btrklfr - {4284C5BE-2614-4DCB-A759-24C0FDEF13B9} - C:\WINDOWS\btrklfr.dll (file missing)

2. Now close all windows other than HiJackThis, including browsers, so that nothing other than HijackThis is open, then click Fix Checked. A box will pop up asking you if you wish to fix the selected items. Please choose YES. Once it has fixed them, please exit/close HijackThis.

HI Rorschach,

I just have to say quickly that I am blown away by how good and helpful you and the whole GTG organization are! That you are out there helping people with real problems and asking nothing in return is amazing! I will be making a paypal donation! Thank You Thank You Thank You!

The good news so far is I'm no longer getting a million popups! None.

If it's helpful or interesting to you My Webroot Spysweeper ran a scheduled scan earlier and found 13 tracking cookies.

MBAM ran with no difficulty and did not ask to reboot.

Here is the log:
Hope you're having a great day :)

Your logs are clean ! We need to do a few things

  • Make sure you have an Internet Connection.
  • Double-click OTMoveIt2.exe to run it.
  • Click on the CleanUp! button
  • A list of tool components used in the Cleanup of malware will be downloaded.
  • If your Firewall or Real Time protection attempts to block OtMoveit2 to rech the Internet, please allow the application to do so.
  • Click Yes to beging the Cleanup process and remove these components, including this application.
  • You will be asked to reboot the machine to finish the Cleanup process. If you are asked to reboot the machine choose Yes.

You now need to update your Java and remove your older versions.

Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components.

* Click Start > Control Panel.
* Click Add/Remove Programs.
* Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE) in the name.
* Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.

Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE), and install it to your computer from
here

Your using an old version of Adobe Acrobat Reader, this can leave your pc open to vulnerabilities, you can update it here :
http://www.adobe.com.../readstep2.html

Now we need to create a new System Restore point.

Click Start Menu > Run > type (or copy and paste)

%SystemRoot%\System32\restore\rstrui.exe

Press OK. Choose Create a Restore Point then click Next. Name it and click Create, when the confirmation screen shows the restore point has been created click Close.

Next goto Start Menu > Run > type

cleanmgr

Click OK, Disk Cleanup will open and start calculating the amount of space that can be freed, Once thats finished it will open the Disk Cleanup options screen, click the More Options tab then click Clean up on the system restore area and choose Yes at the confirmation window which will remove all the restore points except the one we just created.

To close Disk Cleanup and remove the Temporary Internet Files detected in the initial scan click OK then choose Yes on the confirmation window.

Below I have included a number of recommendations for how to protect your computer against malware infections.

* Keep Windows updated by regularly checking their website at :
http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/
This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer.

* To reduce re-infection for malware in the future, I strongly recommend installing these free programs:
SpywareBlaster protects against bad ActiveX
IE-SPYAD puts over 5000 sites in your restricted zone so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all
Have a look at this tutorial for IE-Spyad here

* SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.

Make Internet Explorer more secure
  • Click Start > Run
  • Type Inetcpl.cpl & click OK
  • Click on the Security tab
  • Click Reset all zones to default level
  • Make sure the Internet Zone is selected & Click Custom level
  • In the ActiveX section, set the first two options ("Download signed and unsigned ActiveX controls) to "Prompt", and ("Initialize and Script ActiveX controls not marked as safe") to "Disable".
  • Next Click OK, then Apply button and then OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

* MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well known ad sites and other bad sites. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer, meaning it will be difficult to infect yourself in the future.

* Please consider using an alternate browser. Mozilla's Firefox browser is fantastic; it is much more
secure than Internet Explorer, immune to almost all known browser hijackers, and also has the best built-in pop up
blocker (as an added benefit!) that I have ever seen. If you are interested, Firefox may be downloaded from
Here

* Take a good look at the following suggestions for malware prevention by reading Tony Klein’s article 'How Did I Get Infected In The First Place'
Here

Thank you for your patience, and performing all of the procedures requested.
