Computer is probably infected since some programs create dummy svchost processes which, from Task Manager alone, are impossible to tell apart.

Neil, would Process Explorer be of any use here to determine what is actually running under that instance of svchost.exe?

When it's running, point to the various processes and it will show you what is actually running under it.
