I started to notice this the other day and started with trend micros scan which found tracking cookies and deleted them

I still noticed odd behavoirs like flashing icons at times repeatidly, I get a "slow connection" message where I never have before and even after all the scans and fixes I don't seem "right"

I have followed all the "must read instructions" scans to follow

Any help is GREATLY APPRECIATED!!!

Hi I Want Candy

welcome to geekstogo :)

sorry to keep you waiting. lets do a deeper scan of your machine for me to analyse.

(if your problem has already been resolved, could you just let me know so that i an move onto other logs to help others, thanks)

Please download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) and save it to your Desktop.
  • Close all other windows before proceeding.
  • Double-click on dss.exe and follow the prompts.
  • When it has finished, dss will open two Notepads main.txt and extra.txt -- please copy (CTRL+A and then CTRL+C) and paste (CTRL+V) the contents of main.txt and extra.txt in your next reply.

you may need to post the logs over 2 replies to ensure all the information is posted.

Thank you for all your help Andrew I greatly appreciate it
First the items you asked about.

O16 - DPF: {639658F3-B141-4D6B-B936-226F75A5EAC3} (CPlayFirstDinerDash2Control Object) - http://zone.msn.com/...h2.1.0.0.55.cab
this is a game my niece played. It is no longer used

O24 - Desktop Component 0: (no name) - file:///C:/Documents%20and%20Settings/angel/Desktop/354340101_l.jpg
I don't recall this file and the only oine I recall ahve that %20and %20 were some MP3 and Wav files. Since it is a graphic file if it is something I would "want" personal wise it is backed up or on disc somewhere so it is not important.

*note...I did play some of those music files shortly before this happened. Looks like deleting them all may be my safest choice if these could be the cause. They were given to me by a friend I took them off a disc she had but she is not very pc literate and I don't know where she had gotten them.

Then I ran hijack this and deleted the entries you listed

Next the Mbam log you requested:

Hi I Want Candy

the kaspersky scan picked up a couple of false positives and an infection in the system restore (which we will clear out at the end).

we will delete those entries - the ActiveX will be installed next time you go to the site, if you so choose.

I did play some of those music files shortly before this happened. Looks like deleting them all may be my safest choice if these could be the cause. They were given to me by a friend I took them off a disc she had but she is not very pc literate and I don't know where she had gotten them.

so far the scans have not picked them up as infected. try scanning them individually with your norton and AVG antispyware and see if they are ok. but deleting them would be ok, if you so chose.

in this post we will delete those entries and flush your temp folders, and hopefully we are almost there :)

====STEP 1====
Please re-open HiJackThis and scan. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below.

O16 - DPF: {639658F3-B141-4D6B-B936-226F75A5EAC3} (CPlayFirstDinerDash2Control Object) - http://zone.msn.com/...h2.1.0.0.55.cab
O24 - Desktop Component 0: (no name) - file:///C:/Documents%20and%20Settings/angel/Desktop/354340101_l.jpg

Now close all windows other than HiJackThis, then click Fix Checked. Close HiJackThis.

Using Windows Explorer (to get there right-click your Start button and go to "Explore"), please delete these files (if present):

C:/Documents and Settings/angel/Desktop/354340101_l.jpg

====STEP 2====
Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
This program is for XP and Windows 2000 onlyDouble-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
If you use Firefox browserClick Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
If you use Opera browserClick Opera at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
For Technical Support, double-click the e-mail address located at the bottom of each menu.

In your next reply could i see:
1. a new hijackthis log
2. confirmation on how your machine is running now

Hi I Want Candy

congratulations, your logs are clean :)

that just leaves us to reset your restore points (there will be infections lurking in there) and for me to leave you with some ideas on how to enhance the protection of your machine against future infection.

====STEP 1====
To reset your restore points, please note that you will need to log into your computer with an account which has full administrator access. You will know if the account has administrator access because you will be able to see the System Restore tab. If the tab is missing, you are logged in under a limited account.

Instructions with screenshots to help is http://www.f-secure..../sfc_dis1.shtml

(Windows XP)
1. Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

2. Reboot.

3. Turn ON System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

====AND FINALLY====
The following is a list of tools and utilities that I like to suggest to people. This list is full of great tools and utilities to help you understand how you got infected and how to keep from getting infected again.
  • Spybot Search & Destroy - Uber powerful tool which can search and annhilate nasties that make it onto your system. Now with an Immunize section that will help prevent future infections.
  • AdAware - Another very powerful tool which searches and kills nasties that infect your system. AdAware and Spybot Search & Destroy compliment each other very well.
  • SpywareBlaster - Great prevention tool to keep nasties from installing on your system.
  • SpywareGuard - Works as a Spyware "Shield" to protect your computer from getting malware in the first place.
  • IE-SpyAd - puts over 5000 sites in your restricted zone so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all.
  • ATF Cleaner - Cleans temporary files from IE and Windows, empties the recycle bin and more. Great tool to help speed up your computer and knock out those nasties that like to reside in the temp folders.
  • Windows Updates - It is very important to make sure that both Internet Explorer and Windows are kept current with the latest critical security patches from Microsoft. To do this just start Internet Explorer and select Tools > Windows Update, and follow the online instructions from there.
  • Google Toolbar - Free google toolbar that allows you to use the powerful Google search engine from the bar, but also blocks pop up windows.
  • Trillian or Miranda-IM - These are Malware free Instant Messenger programs which allow you to connect to multiple IM services in one program! (AOL, Yahoo, ICQ, IRC, MSN)
